    #12 Jersey

would give us 10 wins, plus we own the tie breaker on the loser of either ravens or steelers ... The goal would have to be win the division, would not want to go to San Diego or Indy for a round 1 playoff game, but to clinch a playoff spot still is a great feeling..

No. There would still be seven teams capable of winning 11-12 if they win out. Plus a couple of more who could go to 10 if they win out.

Such a good answer for such a bad question (sorry OP - but unlikely as it seems, yes, a team can win 11 and miss the playoffs LOL... never mind 10.)

But "win 3 and in" seems pretty comforting, though of course the whole focus right now is winning the division - and that road goes through the monday night Jets game, realistically.

Now what's cool is that the same math applies to the greenies. I'd love to knock them out 1-on-1, and then see a collapse so they miss the whole party. If nothing else, it would give Lady Tom another opportunity to cry on the air about how he always saw the Pats as role models and is so disappointed that we were mean to him.

I had the same reaction at first but I think he meant Lady Tomlinson.

ha-hah! I would love to see that. You forget to add that Mr. Tomlinson would also mention how classy he is and how BB is the epitome of it.

Note this is NOT the same as most "magic number" calculations.

So they are apparently saying we clinch by beating DET, NYJ, and CHI.

If we lose one of those we may not control our own destiny, or at least they have not computed it (due to myriad tiebreakers).

    #12 Jersey

We get the #1 seed if:

    1. Beat the Jets, Bills, Fins - Jets are the main challenge here obviously. But you figure if they sweep us, we don't deserve the division. The other 2 could be tough, but are very winnable regardless.
    2. Split the NFC games - Very doable

That's the maximum we'd have to do, as you see beat the Jets and we are well on our way. If other teams lose games they should we have to do even less than the above scenario.

That means we need to win 4 out of our 5 remaining games, with no losses in the division, which isn't exactly a simple path to the playoffs.

But that's partly because it's pretty early for such calculations.

    #12 Jersey

Again, that's in the scenario that the jets and other top teams win out their last 4 games.

But considering what the Pats have done to date, it's basically just maintaining that pace. And with all due respect to Chi/GB, they are good but not quite as good as Balt/Pitt/Indy IMO.

FWIW, the Pats are currently ahead of the Jets against common opponents in the loss column; the Jets have 2 losses against common opponents, whereas the Pats only have 1.

Yes i do know that 10 and even 11 does not help u get in the playoffs.. But we are the first to 10 if a win, but a i guess win against jets, bills and miami would help us win the division...

I think it is a MUST win. More so than the Steelers, Colts. Because Jets beat us and both are in the same division.

Patriots need the home-field advantage (except in Heinz field)...

The 6th seed is 10-6 most likely, its not guaranteed but I would bet big on it.

The importance of beating the Jets can not be overstated.

How's this: we lose to the Jets then run the table, finishing 13-3. The Jets also finish 13-3, losing just once more.
We would then be seeded 5th, wildcard, visiting the 10-6 Chargers while the Jets and 12-4 Colts get byes.
    Could happen.

Don't know about the rest of you, but I'm thinking the Pats are capable of winning out their remaining games, and I think they'll do so. Forget magic numbers and all of that crap, bring on the #1 seed.

I also think they can run the table. They do that, tiebreakers and all the other stuff is moot. The Pats simply cannot afford to lose to the Jets next Monday night.
