Haynesworth could go awry at any time.

Mike Wright's concussion situation could go awry at any time.

The rest of the DL have a variety of durability/reliability issues, as football players commonly do -- not necessarily worse than average, as a group, but not better either.

So what's the minimum number of DL it will make sense to keep, assuming both Hayneworth and Wright are included?

Edit: I'm excluding guys whose only claim to being a DL is outside rushing on passing downs. Generally they're OLBs, but if some guy of that kind isn't really an OLB -- well, I'm still excluding him.

    The minimum number is 6.

The most likely number is 7.

Unlikely, but possible is 8. As was indicated the DE position is often played by an OLB who is not in the DL count.

After the first 3, DL's are basically part-time players, in on fewer than 30% of the snap acounts. We certainly don't need more than FOUR role players.

    2010 snap counts
    Wilfork 70
    Warren 46
    Wright 32
    Brace 26
    Pryor 22
    Deaderick 20
    Love 14
Cohen 6 (after Wright was out)

Thanks for the breakdown. We could start; Wilfork, T. Warren and Haynesworth. Still have some pretty good depth with; M. Wright, R. Brace, B. Deaderick and Pryor/Love. I wouldn't be against bringing G. Warren back instead of Pryor/Love.

So Stroud and Haynesworth replace Love and Cohen... that means 8 DL. Who's the odd man out?

The game day roster can go as low as 5, but if memory serves BB said that going with that few has been a mistake at times (the Super Bowl vs. the Eagles?). I think the target is to concentrate the snaps among 5 guys any given game -- 3 starters, 1 rotational guy for the starting ends, and probably 1 interior rusher who's not among the other 4. (Or, if there were more than one excellent backup, use two starters on passing downs and rest them more frequently on generic downs.)

If you really need 5, then you probably want to carry at least 7. The main question in my mind is whether 7 is enough given that 2 of them are particularly high risk, but BB generally deals with that kind of risk and just makes sure he knows where to find JAG replacements if need be.

8 on the roster is overkill. Pryor is gone

This is ass-uming that Stroud has not yet been cut:

Ty Warren - Wilfork - Wright
    Stroud - Haynesworth - Brace - Deaderick

    #87 Jersey

whoever gets hurt. There's bound to be someone unfortunately.

Or someone who just disappoints and doesn't show up like we expect.

I really hope Love sticks. He's been my binky since last preseason.

On a related subject -- who specifically is the backup NT? Ty Warren? Ron Brace?

Yup, we have our six DL's.

The question is who do want for the #7, knowing that he won't play much at all unless there are 2 injuries: Pryor, Love, Richard, or Weston.

Alternatively, we could add G Warren would would have a role at the expense of some of the six.

And a lot of people are projecting there's no roster space for either of them:

    1. Wilfork
    2, Haynesworth
    3. T. Warren
    4. Wright
    5. Brace
    6. Deaderick
    7. Your favorite from among the rest

There's a chance. It would be reasonable to have 4 clear DEs (counting Haynesworth), 2 clear NTs, and Brace (who I think hasn't made it clear yet where his best position is).

Indeed, I think BB's ideal outcome is that Haynesworth/Wilfork/Warren start; Brace substitutes across the line on running downs; Wright substitutes across the line on passing downs; and there are 1 cheap young DE and 1 cheap young NT on deep pine.

    I see 7 DL:

    Warren
    Haynesworth
    Wilfork
    Wright
    Brace
    Deaderick
    Pryor

See if Love is eligible for PS.

I agree with your list of seven. I could even see us re-signing G. Warren and cut one of the seven, presumably Pryor,

I don't know if Love is eligible for the Practice Squad. It would be good for him to be on the Practice Sqaud if it's possible. He might even beat out Pryor for a roster spot.

I like Love but not sure others can't do the NT job as needed and I like the upside of Deaderick and Pryor more. We'll see where Pepper and Bill go, I assume they'll understand the pros and cons better than me ;)

    No Jersey Selected

Uncle Albert has made it quite clear that he's not playing NT for anyone, anywhere, ever.
