I got my graduate degree (in painting of all things) from the University of Houston, and have remained a big fan of the team. I wish Hayden all of the best.
It is a tiny issue, but worth noting here, that UH has an exceptionally fast track, and I think that you can easily add somewhere between .05 and .1 to his time. That would still put Hayden at an exceptionalm4.38 - 4.43. However, I thought the relentless die hard draftniks residing here might want to store that little chunk of information away regarding Hayden and the next speedy UH prospect; they tend to turn up every three years or so.

I hate to break it to you Grid, but he's not going to be a late round/UDFA. ESPN Insider has done a few pieces on him in the last week or so and this is what they said about his value

Either way I agree this kid is a hell of a player though, and no matter where he gets picked he is going to be good value. He is a great story too and you always root for a kid like that.

You're not breaking anything to me.

As you see, I already broke it to you when I started this Thread. [IMG]

Mike Mayock has moved DJ Hayden up to his #3 CB and says he's a "pound the table first rounder" if he's clean medically and his character checks out. Also says a number of NFL personnel have been bringing him up.

I fear the proverbial cat is out of the bag. Might be a late first rounder though :rocker:

Here's the question - is he an effective man press corner in the NFL? He doesn't look very strong in his YouTube cut-ups, esp. by NFL standards. Great anticipation though.

I still think the medical will scare teams off from a first round selection and he could even be there at 59 which would be a gift.

I'm less bothered about how good he is at press man and more bothered about how good he is at defending the pass. For me, that will always be the important thing.

Yes, but disrupting the timing of quarterbacks is essential to defending the pass on the outside. Absent a good jam outside or a moving the QB off his spot, playoff-caliber offenses will complete the throw and catch no matter how good the CB is. If I'm drafting a guy at #29 I want it to be someone who has that ability. The place I'd like to see Hayden is the slot, where his skills (speed, agility, anticipation) would be dynamite. But we just unloaded the Brinks truck for a slot corner.

I like the guy but I was not hugely impressed with what little I saw from the pass coverage in Penn st game. Receivers blowing by him on 3 plays. 1 drop by the receiver and excellent recovery and hands play on another. Just too small a sample to make any kind of amateur decision on him. Guy sure does have the body, size and athletism teams are looking for though. Can blitz like a pro. Gonna leave this one up to the real scouts. Mayock calling him the 3rd best cb in the draft speaks volumes so I'll say he is more privy to his film than we are.

Just looks really raw to me and more like a 3rd or 4th round pick rather than a 1st or 2nd. Hence the title super sleeper. If he learns like a sponge at the next level he could be one of the best CBs in this draft given his superior pro day numbers. Toughest question is what round do you gamble with this kid?

    Hey guys, I'm back.
Actually, the reason was to ask how you guys feel about Tavon Austin (and Patrick Chung when he was healthy and with the Pats.)
I like those guys out of college.

But when I saw the D.J. Hayden thread, I thought I'd jump in and share my two cents.
If you've seen me posted on here around the time the Pats and the Texans were playing last year, you might remember that I'm an UH guy who likes Sebastian Vollmer a lot (but knows about his back problem in college as well.)
Any mentioning about the Pats bringing him back?

Anyway, Hayden had his share of sub-par to poor plays, but overall he's a good player. The first time I watched him play, I thought he has a good chance of getting drafted.

Then when I watched a game they showed on TV and both the guys who covered the game said they can see Hayden playing on Sunday.

Personally, with his injury status, I think I will be careful with him.
Without the injury, he looks like a third round prospect.

I know I like Dennard when I watched him at Nebraska; I thought he'd be drafted higher (4th-5th round). The Pats good value for him.

Don't know when I'd be back, but I would appreciate the feedback on Austin and Chung.

    Thank you in advance.

I'm not as high on Austin as most others on this forum. I don't think that he's what the Patriots need on offense, that being another biG bodied and athletic receiver that can threaten all levels of the field. Austin is more in the DeSean Jackson mold. As for Chung, most people here didn't like him. He got comparisons to Rodney coming out of college, but was an utter failure in coverage. It took him too long to get benched, IMO.

Agreed to terms on a 4 year deal. :D

No problem. Thanks for your input as well. Good luck this season (except when it's against the Pats).

I think he asked because as Austin's stock rose he started to be mocked to the Texans more and more vs the Patriots at first. Given the Texans have the big body receiver in Johnson imagine coupling him with a DeSean Jackson type. I think he would fit the Texans well.

Oh, no doubt about that. He's a much, MUCH better fit for what the Texans are trying to do. Problem is that I don't think he's going to fall to the Texans, either.

Whilst I'm not the biggest Austin fan, if I was the Jets GM, he's who I'd be targeting in the first, preferably with a trade back. He'd help compensate for Sanchez's inability to move the ball and give that tedious offense some playmaking ability.

Probably but if I had to bet the Jets will stay put and try to fix their pass rush with Lotulelei, Ansah or Jones. All three have flags but that never stops them. In the second they'll replace Keller with Eifert or Ertz. I just think Rex figures he can do more with a pass rusher than Sanchez could with 1989 Jerry Rice and he's probably right.

Thanks for the feedbacks guys, but I made a big mistake.

I was wanting to ask about Tavon Wilson, not Tavon Austin, LOL.

    Congrats about resigning Vollmer.

As far as Chung is concerned, I thought he played well in 2010 and part of 2011, before his injury.

Profootball Focus gave him top ten grades for all DBs in 2010 and Athlon Sports rated him third best safety in 2011 (also mentioning the injury.)

I understand that his play is not up to par in 2012.

But are PFF and AS wrong about 2010 and 2011?
