It would have been better if Brady just mooned him just like his QB Jim McMahon.

Or like Brady's own receiver ;)

I think I know what Ditka was getting at - if Brady was pissed enough to get in Smith's face after TD #1, then maybe twenty players rattling off the reasons why the Steelers would win for certain might have gotten to the Pats to the point of distraction. It's a vaild theory from one of the last ball-busting coaches. Mort missed Ditka's very proactive coaching point completely (like most here) - if one little one second string safety mouthing off can get Brady and Co. to get all worked up then an avalanche of such gaurantee talk might just have made them play with too much emotion and not enough smarts - exactly what the Pats don't do when they win.

Ditka's a whack job, but I enjoy watching him. "Yes, Mort, the Pats did win," Big Mike probably wanted to say, "but that's exactly my point: judging from Brady's historonics, maybe a ton more of Smith's type of talk might have helped the Steelers win by throwing the Pats off their controlled and cool game plans."

I don't think so................ Ditka don't know what was said by TB. The whole point BB used that stupid Guarantee thing for was for THU, FRI, SAT, to keep them focused and executing at practice. Come game time, when helmets meet, it's about excuting............ . The guarantee did nothing in game, it just stoked them to focus and execute at practicing and scheming. To sharpen them pre-game and put them into a position to excute IN-GAME. That's what BB material is for. It's of little use when 300+ lbs bodies start flying.

The jawing was probably TB just saying something like "there's your guarantee right there............. a guaranteed piece of sh!t". Mindless jibber jabber that's not really necessary, particularly after you just roasted the guy, but I got no problem with it.

Let's let BB decide how to motivate our guys, not Ditka, OKAY....

its just hypocritical for the media to call out smith for yapping during the week and now criticize the pats for paying atten to it after the game.

Without question :D

You guy's do understand why this senile old fool is acting this way...right?

Like Shula, he sees his legacy being destroyed by the Pats also.

The Pats going 16-0 then 19-0 pushes those 85 Bears just a little further down the historical "greatest teams of all time" pecking order.

Let's face it........all Patriot comparisons and measuring sticks are being compared against the 72 fins......not the 85 Bears. Very few mention the 85 Bears. As great as that season was......is Ditka even mentioned in the same breath as BB or Shula?

That's where the idiot's vitriol is coming from.

I'm sure that if Belichick had just told Kyle Brady to take out Anthony Smith Ditka would have been excited. Did anyone else catch the segment on NFL Live (or Primetime, whichever one is on at 4) where they were talking about Merriman accusing Fisher of sending his players out to hurt Merriman? Ditka was there giggling away, saying "he loved it," and "that's football. I used to do it to my guys."

Ditka's a douche.

This from a coach who let Refrigerator Perry score a SB touchdown instead of Sweetness. He was nothing after Buddy Ryan left.
Even as much as I hated that game, this bothered me. It was so wrong.

"i wouldve had a lot more players popping off...i didnt like the way the patriots reacted" WTF ???

He thinks you shouldn't exploit the weakness of a guy who mouths off? No wonder he didn't last long in the NFL. Gruden has lasted longer than Ditka!

How do you know it wasn't necessary? That was the first burn of the game. He was burned twice more. How do you know Brady getting into his head didn't contribute to the two times he bit on the play? Was he trying too hard to show up Brady?

I think TB was just rattling the guy to see what he's made of. Playing head games, so to speak. Trying to push his buttons. The guy couldn't perform as well as his mouth and TB exploited it. What's the big deal?

I love how its perceived that the Patriots went after Smith because of his guarantee; did it occur to anyone at ESPN that perhaps they went after Smith because they thought he was lousy in coverage? Instead you have schmucks like Ditka and Hoge and Schlereth saying it's classless and they didn't need to do it. Obviously they did have to do it, because those plays were crucial to the win. Bunch o' ninnies need to make something out of nothing.

Another Bear who doesn't know his Ditkus from his Butkus. Too much Levitra, Mike.

jeff fisher was with chicago before..what do you expect from ditka ?

Don't mean to hijack the thread, but I'm wondering whether anyone remembers the details around the Refrigerator score. A Bears fan is arguing that it was a trick play like we use with Vrabel and that the game was not out of hand already. Was Sweetness in at tailback and the hand-off was a quick hitter to the Fridge or was he in at tailback? Also what was the score and time left?

They were up 37-3 at the end @ the third Quarter. It wasnt a trick play (as far as I remember). Perry lined up in the Backfield and ran it in. Peyton wasnt even in on the play. Perry was the lone back.

****'a is a tool. I cant stand that moron.

I wish someone ask Mr. Ditka about Smith taunting/yelling at Brady right before the game during the warm-ups.

Forget the friggin guarantees. A second year player yelling obscenities at one of the greatest player right before the game? I would be ashamed if any of our Pats players made a moron out of himself like this and disrespected the opponent, especially great future HOFers.

i don't remember the specifics of the play except that it was late in the game when it was out of hand and I remember feeling sick that they were humiliating the Pats on a world stage and laughing about it I also remember them showing Walter Peyton on the side line late in the game looking as sick as i felt. I remember him being interviewed afterwards saying it didn't matter that he didn't get to score as they won the game, but his eyes said differently.

I can see this. Look at what the his teams did with Super Bowl Shuffle, Keith Van Horn saying he was going to flip off OJ Simpson in the booth on Monday Night Football if Payton broke his record for 100 yard games or whatever it was. Then there was all of McMahon's antics with Rozelle. It went on and on.

Ditka could have put a stop to all of that but he didn't. You know BB would never let things get close to that. Thing is I don't remember hearing any backlash against the Bears when that stuff happened. But they did get into opponents heads thats for sure.

I said before that Brady should be the default team PR guy. They way he defended Moss was elequent. I would love to hear what he said to Smith. Brady can handle anything and that is what Dika has no clue about. You are not going to rattle Brady.
