we must have had to.
there's no way we paid 5 million bucks a year for Welker. plus its a 7 year deal. There's gotta to be phony years.
There almost has to be a couple of phony years on the back end of that deal. Welker might actually be worth 5 million a year, but there is no way the Pats would have to pay that much.
all i can say is the pats just destroyed the myth they are cheap.
i think they have to be the overwhelming favorite for the superbowl
If we are going to blow a second round pick on him, I guess the money isn't all that incredible.
I wonder what the poison clause is?
no I don't think we are actually paying that. There are phony years in there, and there is a clause in there that says if the Dolphins match, those phony years become guaranteed.
I hope they didn't use a poison pill and I hope they didn't offer him 38 million.
Poison pills suck.
Ugh, please tell me it not true.
Keep the pick and sign Stallworth for the same amount. :bricks:
Not only would the money be absurd, I also think it's silly to give a 2nd round pick to Miami for Welker, considering the WR position is pretty deep this year in the draft. There are likely going to be several WRs at around our 2nd round pick who should be just as good as Welker, for much less money, and without letting a divisional rival have another day 1 pick. That would be just absurd. I really hope that's not true.
they could still trade down and draft a wr. the best thing is the pats finally have a legit game breaker punt returner.
I must have logged into Redskins.com for Wes Welker to get getting that offer.
this is the new nfl. the cap is going to only go up. we'd be complaining if they didn't spend the money.
Even if the back two years are worth something insane, like 9 million a piece, he would still get 20.5 over the first 5. Thats over 4 mill a year. Even if the back 3 years are worth a ton that he never expects to get paid, say 7.5 mill a year, he would still get around 4 mill the first 4 years.
This is Stallworth caliber money, and he is a far better player. Far better. Add in the second round pick.
Well, BB is smarter than I am. He makes mistakes like the rest of us though. I hope this is one of those times were he is smarter than I.
The Welker money and the pick is inevitably going to be compared to Branch + pick. I trust the Patriots didn't lose their minds on this one.
This is some kind of weird poison pill to be sure. It can't be otherwise. That's too much money.
I mean, what are you going to tell Asante?
Ummm....Dennis Northcutt?! The guy was FOURTH in the league, wouldn't need any compensation, and would be a LOT cheaper.
It has to be a poison pill with phony years and phony money on the end.
Welker is much younger. Plus he kicks FG.
Those dollars can't be right. Wes Welker is not worth that much.
of course it can't be, that the same amount of $$$$$ Adalius just signed for.
So because Welker's younger we're giving up a second for him? Doesn't make sense to me.
Remember who has been throwing to Welker, they like him because he fills multiple needs. He runs good short inside routes, and we need that.
Are you numbskulls insinuating you know more about these players and the market and draft pick value than Belioli?
Welker is a self motivated, hard nosed Belichick type football player. And quite a replacement for a potentially retiring smurf. Ever wonder why Stallworth is available again? Want to draft another Fla WR in the second round and see how long it takes him to assimilate an NFL offense, barring injury? Want to lay odds on which one blows a knee first returning kicks - our feature RB or our only starting CB under contract and guaranteed to show for TC?
The poison pill was probably pretty easy like he has to be the highest paid WR on the roster when signed....
let's put it this way. A 2nd round pick can only be signed for 4 years, and is a risk. Let's say its 50/50 whether the pick pans out. Wes just signed for say, 5 years, and we know what we are getting.
Count on a reasonable first 3/4 years with the last few years absurd, and a clause that states something stupid like if he plays in at least 4 home games in Miami, the whole contract is guaranteed. Miami cant match it, so the Pats get him, they get a #2 draft choice, and he gets a 3 year deal with restructuring on the horizon.
Welker is a perfect Pats WR. Quick separation, tough in tight coverage in the middle, durable, good with YAC, runs very clean routes, good hands good punt returner. Think: a cross between pee-on and Troy Brown. And 25. Thats one hell of a second round draft choice.
Action Jackson D ) is gonna be back this year. For those of you who want a fast tall WR to stretch the field and clear the intermediate zones, he's it. For those of you who actually still labor under the delusion that one of those field stretchers will actually ever be a #1 in our system, I pity you. There will never be peace in your mind until BB and Brady are retired......
I can assume you have NEVER EVER disagreed with a move made by Scott B.?
I don't think anyone is saying that. I think people are hoping this isn't a Starks fiasco. 2nd rounder, hmmmmmmmmmm.
my favorite post of the day.
we are numbskulls.com after all LOL
Actually the more I think about it...I mean some of us want Anthony Gonzalez in the first, we basically get the same thing, but proven for a second rounder. I'm kind of t'ed off about giving the Dolphins a first day pick I guess.
I want to hear Tomase or Reiss chime in, see if they can confirm the numbers. I don't doubt Schefter, but maybe they can provide more of a breakdown on the deal.
