Did Oakland almost screw up the trade with the Patriots that brought us Gronk?

There seemed to be some sort of screwup and the commish had to get involved when the Patriots jumped ahead of the Ravens to grab Gronk. Were the Raiders running out of time? I was holding my breath; can you imagine if Oakland had screwed it up so that time expired and the Ravens jumped in and grabbed Gronk? That would been a controversy that would have lasted years....every time Gronk scored a TD for the Ravens Felger would twist the knife.

The same could be said by the Ravens, that they were screwed. Baltimore fans are conspiracy nuts anyway, thinking the league is out to screw them every chance it can. I think it goes back to them being without a franchise for so long and seeing cities like Jacksonville get a team instead of them.

Be interesting to learn the backstory on this one. Is there one?

Lol, that is so true. Seriously, their message boards are hilarious. They just wouldn't stop with the roughing the passer call on Haloti Ngata during the regular season. Plus the fans here are so obsessed with beating the Pats/Colts/Steelers.

    #51 Jersey

That's what lots of smaller and insignificant regional bodies are like aren't they. The world is out to get me. I just know it. I do. That big bad NFL commissioner is out to get me and my Ravens.

From what I've been able to glean from recording the draft and jumping around on various messageboards,I think this was exactly what happened. All night long there was a chess game going on between BB and Ozzie Newsome.

It has happened in the past that teams have been past their allotted time to make their pick and I believe that the NFL allows a little "leeway"(cough, cough),as long as you have it written down on the card or inform the NFL "runner",that a trade has taken place.

BB definitely F'd the Ravens by jumping up for Gronkowski,as they would have grabbed him, imo, and went for Dennis Pitta, right after. It helped that BSPN and NFLN seemed to go to commercials everytime the Patriots made a pick.If this had been an on camera drama,I think the result might have been a huge controversey.

As a sidelight........BB played Dallas like a banjo to keep Dez Bryant away from the Ravens in the First round.I think Jerry Jones and BB discussed this possibility before the draft and that's why we didn't try to "grind" Dallas for more compensation.

Another cute piece of "intrigue" was New Jersey giving 124 and 198 to the Panthers for 112 to move 1 spot in front of the Pats at 113.They,then supposedly,"stole" the RB McKnight from the Pats.
This is beyond ridiculous,as BB immediately went for another TE(Hernandez).

This foolishly giving up a 6th rd choice was, simply,
an ego-driven........"shot across the bow" by T-Rex and Tannenbaum.Wasting a draft choice just to show up BB is like playing checkers with Bobby Fisher...........the envy is just "palpable" coming from the NJ Swamplands.

The ego and testoserone that flows during the draft and the trades that are made, and NOT made, are the most fascinating nuances of the whole process for me.

There are Chess Masters like BB and Ozzie and Stratego players like Andy Reid and Scott Pioli.......most of the rest are just playin' Checkers

What is the hubbub about- the TV timer going off and there being a delay before the league saying the pick is in or it seeming like it took longer for the network to go from saying the pick is in and the league announcing it?

I didn't notice the Jets jumping in front of the Pats to grab McKnight. Are you sure the Pats didn't want him and were left picking another TE when the wanted a RB?

The best part of that was that it was (I believe) the only pick of ours in which our pick was in right after the previous pick was announced. BB was clearly telling the Jets that they did not take a player we wanted.

They submitted the pick very quickly and BB also said they were pretty surprised Hernandez was still on the board at the time of their fourth round pick. So yeah, I'm pretty sure the Patriots did not want McKnight.

if you read that transcript of the post draft q+a with bb he's actually asked about that and he just said something about how they were trying to hustle it in at the wire and thought they just made it, or something like that.
I'm sure it was just trade talk that dragged on a little.

Anyone know if the NFL has any kind of procedures to stop the clock temporarily for trades that would have allowed that extra time legally to shut them up?

Funny, I could have sworn in the 6th and 7th rounds multiple teams went over their limits getting the picks in yet not a peep about them...

    No Jersey Selected

i have been watching the draft since 1982 and every time it is the pats turn to pick, they go to commercial break. they talk about the previous pick before the break and they talk about the next pick after the break. it's uncanny. every year for 28 years.

I have absolutely no idea on the procedures, but my halfass guess is that it's not a game clock type of thing.
I'd imagine it's more just a deadline where you get a little wiggle room to get the info in.
like I said, though, I have no idea.

people ***** about everything, so why should this be any different?
I didn't even realize it was an issue 'til I read this thread just now.

Trust me......The Pats were not picking a 3rd down back from USC.......NJ giving up their 6th rounder?

BB knew what they were doing...........That's why he made the fastest pick in the BB era, when he laser-mailed the Hernandez pick to the commish.

The Jests could have used that #6 for one of Cromartie's young un''s........pathetic and juvenile move:rocker:

First off, playing "checker" with Bobby Fisher would be kind of a waste because he's a chess player, or was anyway.

Second, I don't think the Jets were necessarily trying to jump ahead of the Pats. This is just part of their MO - they don't care about late round picks and they just moved up about 10 spots or whatever it was to draft the guy they wanted. I agree there's no way the Pats would have taken McKnight.

I actually think the Pats' trade downs in the 1st were brilliant. They knew who they wanted and they knew exactly who was going to get drafted in each spot. In going from 22 to 24, they knew Denver was taking Demayius and that GB would jump on Bulaga. Then dropping from 24 to 27, they knew who Dallas would take and I'm sure they new Denver was about to trade into the 25 spot for Tebow - of for no other reason then because Denver probably made the same offer the the Pats and they knew Ozzie wouldn't turn it down. So the only uncertainty was at 26 with Arizona, but I'm sure they would have been OK with Kyle Wilson if McCourty went 26. And of course they knew that the teams at 29-31 all wanted CBs. So it was very precise placement - and netter a hopefully valuable 3rd rounder aka Taylor Price.

playing "Checker"(s)-(plural) with Bobby Fischer is irony......ever get it?

Actually,BB would have taken Kareem Jackson,if the chargers hadn't moved up and grabbed the RB that Houston wanted at #19.The point is.once Balt.realized that BB had a stranglehold on Dez Bryant, they made a nice trade for themselves to get out of the 1st rd.......kudos to them for maling a nice trade on the fly.

BTW.....Mc Daniels would never have made that deal for Tebow with BB.........Why?......Ego.It would have made him look like a schoolboy chasing after the principle. As it was,Josh kind of had premature ejaculation,by pulling the trigger(pun) on Tebow like that.............think Sunset Boulevard......."I'm ready for my close-up,Mr DeMille":singing:

Where do you get this stuff? It's a known fact that BB was targeting McCourty all the way through. Bryant was never on their radar.
