There are lots of reasons why we are fighting for our playoff lives right now, injuries, not being able to get off the field on 3rd down, etc.

but to have the "luck of a coin toss" figure so heavily in the picture..

    stinks!

No, leaving Brett Favre's favorite target wide open on 3rd and 15 likely decided our season.

    No Jersey Selected

Well yeah, it was the coin toss or any one of those other four losses.

I would say our team-wide meltdown in the Pittsburgh game will haunt us a bit more if we don't make the playoffs. We came out hot and simply fell apart.

The Gaffney drop, the Thomas penalty, the coin toss, the 3rd and 15, the Pitt meltdown, anyone of those changes and the Pats are in the drivers seats. But could've beens don't get the Pats anything, and I'm sure all the team is focused on right now is taking care of business at 1 pm on Sunday.

    Can we stop this?

We're 10-5 and we deserve to be 10-5, it's a miracle we even got to overtime against the Jets and letting them convert 3rd and 15 is completely our fault and inexcusable.

It appears that losing 5 games with 2 of them to division rivals and 3 others to conference rivals is what is helping to decide the future of the Patriots this season

Isn't it a little foolish to look to blame the .01% of circumstances that you can't control instead of the 99.99% of circumstances that you can control when things may not work out?

It is kind of amazing that one bad half of football took us from "playoff bye driver's seat" to "need win and help to get in".

This is the kind of thread I'd expect on a Chargers board.

    :agree:

Yep, that about says it...throw in a specific reference to the first Dolphins game and the Colts game and you've nailed it...

    Coin toss? baloney.

Don't be upset at our luck. Be upset about not covering 3rd and 15, the Slater fumble vs. Pittsburgh, the stupid (and deserved) Thomas penalty, Gaffney's drop, Moss's drops vs. Pittsburgh, crappy play by the secondary in the first 3/4 of the season, etc.

We had enough screwups that if only one were omitted we would be debating the wisdom of playing or resting key players next week, not looking to get in.

Lady luck doesn't smile on people who don't do their jobs well enough to take luck out of the picture.

Whining is for losers and Colts fans!

I get mad when fans of other teams whine and i get just as mad when we whine.

we are we are because we've lost five games. end of story. we got whupped in a couple of them but also helped the other guys beat us in a couple more of them (coint toss? try "we let Brett convert at third and 15!")

The O.P. made a completely valid point. Despite all the "San Diego/Pittsburgh" type replies, had that coin toss gone the other way, this team might well be 11-4 right now, and that third down would never have happened.

    Please.

The NE Defensive players were not banned from the playing field for the OT.

Losers whine about things like that.

Do kindly explain how one controls his/her own destiny re:accidents, both first person and third-party.

You can't look back on something like that...it's a league-wide rule, you play the hand that's dealt you and in the end it was the Pats defense that didn't make the stops, end of story.

If you want to reflect, reflect on the Indy loss and the 15 yarder on Thomas. Or earlier in that Jets game, the holding on Vrabel that allowed the Jets to score a TD instead of a FG. 3rd and 15 in OT comes to mind. This team certainly could have won either of those games, but I think the coin toss has less to do with it than poor execution and bad penalties during crucial moments in those two games.

So: let's hope to God the Pats make the playoffs so we're not bemoaning plays like these for another 6 months.

Oh come on. You're actually comparing losing a coin toss and having the ability to take the field with 11 men against the opponent's 11 men with getting hit by lightning?

    Are you really?

The innocuousness of the event -- a coin flip -- makes your point seem reasonable. But it's no different than Raiders fans complaining about the Walt Coleman's tuck rule call. They act as if the game was over and was handed to us as a victory. Our response has always been that the Raiders had ample chances to affect the outcome, and they failed. The Jets coin toss is no different. Looking at it that way makes it clearer it's just whining.

It's OK in my opinion to note that a coin toss was one of the events that shaped our season, but to say it "decided" the season is wrong.

Funny how people read what they want to read. The very first part of my post said:

Why is pointing out something that happened, A FACT, considered a "whine"? There are lots of reasons why the team is in the position it is in, all of them controllable but the coin toss.
