Nothing more courageous than passing on another $1.8 trillion in debt to our children (and their children). What's another couple trillion among friends? Those little turds won't even be able to vote for at least another decade, so let's just steal from them today.

Dems to lift debt ceiling by $1.8 trillion, fear 2010 backlash

In a bold but risky year-end strategy, Democrats are preparing to raise the federal debt ceiling by as much as $1.8 trillion before New Year’s rather than have to face the issue again prior to the 2010 elections.

“We’ve incurred this debt. We have to pay our bills,” House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer told POLITICO Wednesday. And the Maryland Democrat confirmed that the anticipated increase could be as high as $1.8 trillion — nearly twice what had been assumed in last spring’s budget resolution for the 2010 fiscal year.

This problem has been a long, long time in the making. So trying to blame Democrats for this exclusively is disingenuous, at best.

Well let's just look at it this way. When we hit the midpoint of Obama's term, our great Republic will have existed for roughly 235 years, 2 of which had Obama as President and Democrats in solid control of both houses of Conress.

It is likely that in those 2 years, Obama will personally be responsible for about 33% to 40% of our debt.

    How do you figure?

The current US debt is ~12 trillion. The current US budget deficit (as of last fiscal year, per your article, is 1.54 trillion -- only a small percentage of which Obama's policies are responsible for).

Besides, it's sheer inanity to expect any President to come into office and revert from a trillion-plus deficit to a balanced budget in a year. Talk about impossible standards, and ones I bet never even occurred to you when Bush was president.

Never hear about how much debt is attributed to the Iraq fiasco??

Never hear about the legacy costs of the military, which is estimated to be 18cents of every tax dollar..

No one every whines about how 54 cents of every tax dollar goes to the military...

The wars are obama's now. He could have brought them home a while ago.

    That's simply not true :

And just in case you are planning on arguing about SS and Medicare, my paycheck damn well considers it to be a tax.

You also said "every tax dollar", but there's a ton of taxes at the state level which don't go to the military at all. You are so far off it's not even funny.

You and I both know that's crap. Nice attempt at absolving his predecessor from blame, though.

No we don't. The wars were Bush's fault, obviously. But they could have been ended by obama. He absolutely did not have to send another 30K to Afghanistan and he could have started bringing the others home too.

Yeah, I suppose if you completely ignore the political realities (and constraints) of both situations.

I wonder what would have happened had Obama not decided to send reinforcements to Afghanistan ...

Depends how you look at it.. there is disagreement, difficult to discuss all of it as much of it is top secret..

LMAO, now that is an unbiased source

First off your statement was wrong on it's face. You said "54 cents of every tax dollar goes to the military" when you should have said federal dollar because this link certainly doesn't include state taxes like property and sales tax.

If you want to not count social security, great. But the total spent on it is unquestionably about equal in dollars spent to defense. All by itself. And what is worse, as you know, is that defense spending will go down if obama ever ends the wars whereas social security is getting bigger as the boomers retire and people live longer.

Without regard, we will never know.. as most of this is secret, unbiased sources are usually the order of the day.

I am aware of my bias... some are not.
