Re: Democrats’ New Intelligence Chairman Needs a Crash Course on al Qaeda

This is yet another sign that the Democrats have no more clue about what to do in Iraq than do the Republicans. More from the idiot Democrat Reyes:

...It was that way in Vietnam, too, Reyes says, which “haunts us. If you substitute Arabization for Vietnamization, if you substitute . . . our guys going in and taking over a place then leaving it and the bad guys come back in. . . .”
    He trails off, despairing.
“I could draw many more analogies.”
Yet Reyes says he favors sending more troops there. “If it’s going to target the militias and eliminate them, I think that’s a worthwhile investment,” he said. It’s hard to find anybody in Iraq who thinks the U.S. can do that. On “a temporary basis, I’m willing to ramp them up by twenty or thirty thousand . . . for, I don’t know, two months, four months, six months — but certainly that would be an exception,” Reyes said.
Meanwhile, the killing is going on below decks, too, within Sunni and Shiite groups and factions. Anybody who pays serious attention to Iraq knows that.
Reyes says his first hearings come January will focus on how U.S. intelligence can do a better job helping the troops in Iraq. It may be way too late for that.
“Stop giving me tests!” Reyes exclaimed, half kidding. “I’m not going to talk to you any more!” ...

Out of touch and unaccountable. Meet the new boss - same as the old boss.

Re: Democrats’ New Intelligence Chairman Needs a Crash Course on al Qaeda

The Republican sycophants set the bar so low that it will take time to lift it back up.

    http://www.washingtontimes.com/commentary/20061012-092914-2705r.htm

"Laurence Pintak, director of the Adham Center for Electronic Journalism at the American University in Cairo, wrote in a recent column: 'It's not that President Bush was unable to tell the difference between Sunnis and Shias. Even after 30 years of covering the Middle East, that remains a very difficult task. But the president had no clue they even existed.'

"Mr. Pintak quotes a new book by Peter Galbraith, 'The End of Iraq,' in which the author describes the president becoming 'very perplexed during a briefing a few months before the invasion, when his guests kept talking about the Sunnis and Shias in Iraq. 'I thought the Iraqis were Muslims,' the president declared.'"

    http://www.nytimes.com/2006/10/17/o...709ea7c5631b3f&ei=5088&partner=rssnyt&emc=rss

Take Representative Terry Everett, a seven-term Alabama Republican who is vice chairman of the House intelligence subcommittee on technical and tactical intelligence.

“Do you know the difference between a Sunni and a Shiite?†I asked him a few weeks ago.

Mr. Everett responded with a low chuckle. He thought for a moment: “One’s in one location, another’s in another location. No, to be honest with you, I don’t know. I thought it was differences in their religion, different families or something.â€

Re: Democrats’ New Intelligence Chairman Needs a Crash Course on al Qaeda

The idea of sending more troops isn't crazy when you think in terms of the fact that we succeeded in what was western Germany and Japan way back when. I don't see too much of a difference between the two situations.

It may be too late now; but I have to wonder where things would be in Iraq if the occupying force had been 2x or even 3x as big.

Re: Democrats’ New Intelligence Chairman Needs a Crash Course on al Qaeda

Does this point to the same faux pas as in Viet Nam, that these wars are fought from the oval office, pentagon and halls of congress instead of by the generals who know what is going on?? The issue of a big occupying force would have led to some type of involuntary conscription, and that would have led to chaos. Particularly if there was a no deferment, lottery type system that would have led to a bunch of upper and middle class getting drafted and killed.

Re: Democrats’ New Intelligence Chairman Needs a Crash Course on al Qaeda

    Here's the main difference:
Japan and Germany were civilized cultures with strong national, cultural, and religious identities that were mostly uniform throughout their respective societies. They also started the war and were soundly beaten and anhilated for very good reason and they knew it at the end. The combination of exhaustion, guilt, and responsibility made the post war process much easier and attainable. Iraq as a "country" has none of that going for them or us. There likely will not be an Iraq before long and no one will notice any difference - in fact things might be more natural.

Re: Democrats’ New Intelligence Chairman Needs a Crash Course on al Qaeda

    Bullsh-t, Boy.
We lost Nam and we'll lose Iraq because we have no business going to war with a country that never attacked us. The last war we won we did so because we were hit first and the government had no trouble motivating the home front. Do you think the American People would run scrap metal and rubber drives, use food ration vouchers and go without anything for the sake of defeating Iraq and North Viet Nam? No way! Know why? Because our involvement in Nam and Iraq was wrong, illegal, and immoral and you know it.

Re: Democrats’ New Intelligence Chairman Needs a Crash Course on al Qaeda

I can see what you guys are saying. Lets hope that in the future politicians realize that some situations don't have a military solution. The truly galling part of this is the fact that I'm sure that Iraq would be better off if they had bought what we are selling and that the Middle East in general would have been better off over the long haul too.

    Yes.

The similarity between Vietnam and Iraq is that America attacked these two countries without any provcation.

We invaded these countries based on lies and deceptions.

Re: Democrats’ New Intelligence Chairman Needs a Crash Course on al Qaeda

The idea of sending more isn't crazy, just as long as the short term purpose is to destroy the Mehdi Army, Al-Sadr's personal militia.

The reason why the initial occupying force was not larger, is because the numbers of a larger force could never be sustained over a large period of time. sending in a 300k-400k force would have been unsustainable for longer than 2 years. At the current levels, we've maxed at roughly 150k. Think of how "stretched" we consider ourselves in years 3 to 4, and then try to figure out what having double that (or more) from day 1 would have meant. The bottom line is the force was smaller than was maybe ideal, but it was done so as a contingency towards a lasting occupation. In hindsight, the smaller force was actually a wise move for this reason. Where the Administration royally screwed up, was with de-B'aathification, and worse off, with disbanding the Army. Had they not taken those two steps, they'd have been able to more rapidly train Iraqi forces to supplement the lack of coalition troops. That was where this war turned for the worst.

Re: Democrats’ New Intelligence Chairman Needs a Crash Course on al Qaeda

I agree. In 2003, I argued with my brother (ex-airborne paratrooper) about the precedent being set with the war. I didn't like it. That aside, a success in Iraq, of which I am not willing to concede as a loss like Wistah, would clearly make the world a far safer place. It's too bad that so many have been undermining the cause (and still do). I for one preffered no action were taken, but once we broke the dam, I feel we are compelled to make sure it gets fixed. Failure, for so many reasons, cannot be an option.

This Reyes incident leaves me searching for answers...actually questions that nobody is asking. How can a person so clueless rise to power in politics? This guy has a nose very very brown ... stained brown ... he pimped and ho'd alot to rise up to his rank. the democrats are no better than the G.O.P. ... they haven't taken over yet and the downslide has begun ... more appointees who earned their job by rumpswabbing...have any earned it with thier brains like Obama???

Please tell me the democrats have more than just Obama in the intelligence area...this country needs book smart and street smart people more than ever.

Re: Democrats’ New Intelligence Chairman Needs a Crash Course on al Qaeda

When the Mehdi Army is eliminated, what then? You don't think another group will rise and take its place? If you've ever lost at anything, you know that the best possible outcome of a loss is to learn the mistakes that were made on the way to that loss. Apparently we didn't learn that in Nam. We need to accept the lesson of Iraq and, finally, Nam and use these lessons to keep us from getting into another quagmire in the future. When you're in a hole, the worst thing do do is keep digging. The second worst thing is to get out of the hole, and start digging another one.

You seem to have the same problem as many in your perspective. You think success is the only option, yet you are unable to articulate what would define success. I'm well aware of the negative consequences of leaving Iraq, but in the long run, letting the natural process take place will be better than trying to artificially impose our vision of how things should be there. It's called colonialism and it has never worked. Iraq, to me, looks more and more like Yugoslavia under Tito, and that wasn't better. When Yugoslavia broke up, it was mayhem and murder for a few years, but the nations have shaken themselves out and are settling into the natural order of geopolitics- groups of people with like cultures within the borders of theose cultures.

FBN, there is little difference between the two parties. Niether is concerned as much with the countries future, as they are with croniism, and safeguarding their parties success. When people (or Sheeple) blindly support these evil groups, they aid and abed the destruction of the USA. I find it comical that someone so ignorant to the terrorist threat could be put in such a position. Afterall, there are 20 people in here who know more than this clown. The sad aspect in all of this is that the sheeple rule the roost, and they blindly support party over principle.

Re: Democrats’ New Intelligence Chairman Needs a Crash Course on al Qaeda

You know, Harry, a good politician in a democracy should be able to estimate the power of the opposition. Not only did Bush fail to estimate the strength of the anti-war crowd, he ultimately failed to keep his own people in line or rally the pro-war crowd. In other words, he failed as a politician. As people said of him in the past, he's a good campaigner but a lousy office holder.
