Maybe it would be a good idea to keep all ideas in one thread. I believe we did this in 2008.

    Re: Democrat Convention 2012

OT, could a mod please fix the typo in the thread name?

This is the Democratic convention, and the Democratic party. An individual affiliated with said party is a Democrat.

And tonight I'm especially proud to identify as such.

    Re: Democrat Convention 2012

One thing they're mentioning in the post-speech coverage is it resonates much more to talk about struggling through your own debt, or your own kid being alive today, or you personally having the opportunity (Duckworth) because of our social safety net... than to talk about how your dad actually once worked for a living.

Like it or not, there are just many more people who resonate with struggle than with privilege. It's the other side of the "aspirational" story -- not that it's bad to succeed, but that it's good to have struggled. Romney hasn't. He can't really help that, but he hasn't.

I don't know that anything at the conventions will really move the needle. That'll probably come with the debates, if at all. But it's striking how much more this talked to my gut -- and I'm not from poverty or privilege (which is basically the target audience.)

For some people watching the convention is like going to church or
going to a seminar ... good for a :americaflag: boost to one's patriotism - it doesn't hurt.

The Dem speakers are SO much more intelligent, eloquent and issue-oriented than the GOP speakers were last week it's not even funny.

Intelligence can not be judged by how well some one speaks in public. Other people write it and they say it, that is how it works.

What they said -- in general and on balance -- certainly sounded more intelligent, eloquent, and issue-oriented than their counterparts of the first convention night last week. (And I'm still trying to get over Ann Romney's sob story about "hard times" eating canned tuna and pasta.)

Well then they're smart enough to hire better writers. :)

Really? I bet they do not even hire the writers someone else does. And, this is where you say they are smart enough to hire people that hire better writers.

Maybe they sound more intelligent because they are saying what you want to hear?

That's the one Hamar ... I don't take much stock in them. I am a bit annoyed of the I came from more humble beginnings than you theme. But they are what they are - intended to pump up the base ... agree or disagree with them one cannot expect them to be any different than what they are.

Libs always have to tell everyone who intelligent they are..... wonder why they feel the need to say something which if true would be self evident.... :p

An underlying tone certainly is that "You need us" - "You need the government". Hate to say it but they kind of play a version of God - it's kind of scary. I accept that as politics - doesn't bother me but I do see it. Yeah sure, I need them we all need them but many of us like our independence also.

This is of course a fundamental difference between conservatives and liberals.

Conservatives hold as a fundamental principle that we are endowed by our CREATOR with inalienable rights. Government exist only to protect those rights. Liberals view that government GIVES rights to citizens, rather than citizens giving limited powers to government to protect the rights of individuals.

Government is there to guarantee happiness merely to allow us to persue happiness.

I would note that all references to God have been removed from the dem platform this year.

Kind of creepy ... especially in that Obama is not that kind of a President. He has his own style but he certainly does not project as a big strong leader type of person. I think the leaders of the democratic party do all the heavy lifting and he's just a face.

If he was the man they paint him to be he would have found a way to get Congress to work together. A great President IMO is one that can at least make great attempts at that. Our President is supposed to be the leader of our government and country and not just the face of their party.

Somehow it's been reduced to face/head of the party. Half of our government gets to do their thing instead of putting everyone together towards common goals attainable. I don't see Romney as that person either so this is going to be a long 4 years.

You nailed it completely! He is almost childlike in the way he attacks any criticism that comes his way. There is no way he can be the leader we need and he does not even try to.

He derides and tries to punish the opposition instead of trying to get them to work with him or bend them towards his goals.

The worst part of your post though is that you are right in saying that Romney is not that person either. I think Romney may be even worse than Obama :( But, one of them will be President, sadly.

The Constitution did the same thing, they fail to menton God at all..

But do not give up hope as they did proclaim in the Signatory section where it is dated and says

Now the intent of the framers can ensue, but before you do check out Jefferson's editing of the new testament.. that is a document he cut and paste that put the bible in "chronological order", conveniently leaving out the "Immaculate Conception and "Resurrection".

Did you ever notice these words in the Declaration of Independence:

These are the words of Deists, many of our founding father's religion, loosely meaning that in nature they see God.

So all the BS about God as the foundation of our country, is what it is.. BS..

I'm an Independent, so I'm not predisposed to what they have to say as Democrats. But you're right in that I want to hear intelligent discourse. So far this convention is one-up on last week's.
