We've gone from our politicians writing the Federalist Papers (Madison, Jay, and Hamilton) to buffons who think scanning the front page of the Washington Post as heavy reading.

    We're doomed.

I'm not justifying it, but your qoute doesn't read like your insinuating.

When I read that, he is simply saying that most won't read it, and therefore wouldn't vote on it.

I didn't get the sense that he was laughing or anything sarcastic...

This is why congressmen have staffs. The yearly budget is something like 50,000 pages on average. Consuming 250 pages of dry, legal prose per day requires better than 1/2 a year to cover 50,000 pages. The seat holders have trusted subordinates write the bills according to their specifications and other trusted subordinates check their work. This is how any huge task gets done, by having leaders delegate tasks.

Imagine where the computer industry might be today if Bill Gates had felt duty bound to read all 25 million lines of code that made up his Windows 95 before releasing it. My guess is that it still would have been Windows 95, only the 95 would have stood for 2095.

bill gates was not elected........and every block of code is tested prior to product completion......a pathetic analogy

it is the job of an elected official to know exactly what they are voting for.........in your case, we should vote for the subordinates instead.....they are the ones doing the work........

typically libbie 'whatever' world........most of them will vote for it because their side is voting for it.......much in the manner our current prez was elected.........

    You're really funny.
Yeah, all the mindless automatons are on the left.
All the free thinkers are Republicans.
    Dittoheads.
John Boehner is such a trailblazer!
    LOL!

Here's what we'll do Tank. We'll construct a language that condenses 50k or 100k or 500,000 pages of legal text written in English into I dunno maybe 3000 single sided double spaced pages that still meets the standard of completeness that the courts require of legal text. That's something that your average Congressman can cover in a year or so, reading wise, and still have time to determine and debate what these laws should actually say and you know campaign and maybe sleep and eat from time to time.

I say we call it Esperanto. Has a nice ring to it IMO.

This is a yet another bogus issue from the largely clueless Republican Party. The notion that every bill must be read in its entirety is plain silly. We do not elect Congresspeople as technical experts, but rather as people to represent our general concerns. There are numerous experts at various levels of government, including Congress, to vet a piece of legislation.

Given the non stimulative stimulus, I'd say you're wrong or they're bad at it. Who was it who said the stimulus was heavy on spending and light on stimulus ? Right, the "largely clueless" Republicans.

If I remember correctly Michael Moore made a huge deal about congressmen not reading the Patriot act before they voted on it. Did this board exist then? It would be interesting to see what people were saying about it.

    Good question.
Were the Dems asleep at the wheel?
Not that they were necessarily driving.

And, analogously , it would be interesting to see what Michael Moore says about this.
