Defensive snaps from yesterday. Brown and Barrett played every defensive play. Hope like hell Pat Chung can come back this week. Would love to get a vet at FS and use S. Brown as rotational player. Not as a regular.

S Josh Barrett – 66 of 66
S Sergio Brown – 66 of 66
LB Jerod Mayo – 66 of 66
CB Devin McCourty – 65 of 66
CB Leigh Bodden – 60 of 66
LB/DE Rob Ninkovich – 59 of 66
DL Vince Wilfork – 59 of 66
CB Kyle Arrington – 58 of 66
LB Brandon Spikes – 48 of 66
DL Andre Carter – 41 of 66
DL Shaun Ellis – 37 of 66
DL Kyle Love – 33 of 66
LB Gary Guyton – 18 of 66
DL Landon Cohen – 17 of 66
DE Mark Anderson – 13 of 66
LB Dane Fletcher – 12 of 66
DE Jermaine Cunningham – 7 of 66
CB Antwaun Molden – 1 of 66

Thanks. Interesting.

Obviously, with the depth concerns at S, there was no rotation. Luckily they made it through the game. Hopefully Chung is back in a week.

Similarly fortunate that Bodden and McCourty didn't miss too many snaps, given depth issues there as well.

Interesting that Ninkovich is getting the lion's share of DE snaps. It's certainly not that Anderson or Cunningham are outplaying him, but he's just not real effective.

Only 17 players had more than 1 rep on defense.
Each of the starting front 7 played at least 50% of the reps.
The 3 corners were out there at least 87% of the time.
The 2 safeties were out there 100% of the time.
==============================
SOME NOTES
1) Cunningham, Anderson and Fletcher are definitely backups.
2) Spikes is a starter. He played in over 70% of the reps against a passing team.
3) Cohen and Guyton have their roles (playing 25% or so).
3) Belichick didn't use the special teamers at all (well one play total): Molden, Tarp, Ventrone, Adams, Ihedigbo. That's fine. They weren't active to play anything but special teams.
===============================
BOTTOM LINE
We counted on Barrett and Brown on every single play. Last year, we had three safeties with lots of reps, with some reps for the #4. Last year we had Meriweather, Sanders, Chung, and Page/Brown. Obviously, we need to have Chung and Dowling back to take some of the load. We had no dime back since we only had 5 defensive backs that Belichick trusted to play. I guess Guyton was the dime back.

So we have 7 defensive backs on the roster than Belichick trusts to play. That simply isn't enough.
In the past, when Page or Arrington or Brown or Wilhite or even Lockett were backups, they would play a few reps if needed because of injuries to others. All these players used to be active primarily to play special teams. However, they could step up when needed.

WE NEED A FOURTH SAFETY WHO IS AT LEAST GOOD ENOUGH TO GET ONE REP WHEN THERE IS AN INJURY.
