Captain obvious checking in.. In 2008 the Jets ran basically the same scheme as the Patriots and averaged 22.8 PPG. In 2009 Ryan takes over the same unit and they average 14.8.

Scheme and attitude a good combination for a defense (not to mention talent). Hope this is a wakeup call for the folks at Gillette.

attitude is a huge intangible factor - i didn't feel the fire from us this year at all. we need a bad-*** SOB with acid up his *** on our defense for sure

Not the same unit, last years team didn't have Bart Scott, Leonard and Revis is definitely come into his own. I would argue that he is the best CB in football.

So definitely not the same unit.

They have a great scheme and they added Bart Scott who is a nasty SOB. The Pats don't anybody like that. They prefer slow D-lineman, bad LB's and midget CB's.

hahahaha - im ok with giant slow D-lineman to occupy space but in order for that to work we DO need fast athletic linebackers dont we... =T

I thyink its a great point.
However the Jets to their credit have gone for QUALITY instead of quantity and it shows.

    The PATS need all three

    players
    scheme
    attitude

As much as I hate the JETS they have become what every NE football fan would like the PATS to be
when did BB decide to become a finesses coach

I desparately want someone in Foxboro with Rodney's attitude. We absolutely don't have that. Was hoping it would be Mayo - but I don't see it from him.

Start playing the Pat Chungs of the world from the outset. We all know James Sanders is limited and is not the future and we drafted Chung to be the future to play along side Meriweather. Damn it then BB, play the kid instead of grooming him in. You wanted 2nd round draft picks, well because of that piss poor strategy, these 2nd round guys get to sign little 4-year contracts and then fly the bleepin coup after they are finally groomed. Well if Chung finally gets on the field in Year 3 as a fulltime starter what good is that BB ?

Play him from the outset and let him learn, we would have been better for it right now.

Bend but don't break may be dead in todays offensive minded NFL. You have to be aggresive, force negetive plays. Get people into 3rd and long. You can't just keep everything in front of you and hope your good on 3rd and 3......
The rules are'nt in your favor.

having a Revis definately helps, you can blitz more and dont have to worry about getting burnt, a top notch, shutdown corner would go a long way to making the pats D a top D in the league. If no corners like that are available you better get pass rushers that can get to the QB.

Profoundly true, and very well said. May this be the anthem of the 2010 off-season.

I've said it all season long and will continue to say it. Bend but don't break, read and react, two-gapping defense is not the best way to go about playing defense anymore in the NFL.

It is time to go to the 1-gap, get more aggressive, and try to force the issue. There is a reason that the Steelers and Ravens have been the best defenses over the past decade. They attack instead of sitting back.

It makes me sick to my stomach when I see us give up a first down on 3rd and 10+.

This bend but don't break, hold the team to FG's worked great in 2007 when the offense was so lethal and the opponents needed TD's almost every possession to stay in the game.

The only good coming out of this is that a Colts-Jets AFCCG will go right up the ass of the Krafts and BB. If anything, it will spark some major revamping that is needed. I hope the Colts win b/c I ******* hate the Jets.

You may be right. I wonder if Dick Jauron knows the Dick LeBeau style of the 3/4

    I agree with that.

Clearly the Jets have added some people (Scott, Leonard) and others have developed (Harris, Revis). But I think the attacking scheme also has a lot to do with the difference in defensive performance.

It's kill or be killed in the NFL. Either you kill the opposing QB or he kills you. BBDB is just giving him a menu and serving up hors d'oeuvres.

It used to be that you could sit back and use deception to force a mistake. With all the offensive rule changes, you have to go out there and force one. It's not disguise, it's don't show and then go D, now....

    Disable Jersey

With a far worse group of talent this season, the Patriots still managed to be in the top 10 in scoring defense this season. It was a triumph of coaching and scheme over lack of talent, which is why the defense couldn't get it done against the better offenses, when the coaching just wasn't sufficient to cover for the absence of quality players. Cripes, how do people explain why the re-insertion of Sanders into the starting role made the defense look so much better despite all the claims that he's not a good player? "Bend but don't break" is just fine.

Players added to the Jets roster this year:

    Bart Scott - Starter
    Lito Sheppard - Starter
    Jim Leonhard - Starter
    Marquis Douglas - Starter

Note that David Harris hurt himself last year and like Mayo saw lingering effects of it. In 2007, he had 127 tackles, 2 FF, and 5 sacks (under the same defense that Belichick runs). In 2008, he had 75 tackles, 0 FF, and 1 sack under the same defense. This year, he had 127 tackles, 2 FF, 2 INTs, and 5.5 sacks. So he has virtually the same stats in 2007 under Mangini that he had this year under Ryan (except for the INTs) and he only staterd 9 games in 2007.

Also, note unlike Kris Jenkins last year, Sione Pouha did not fade down the stretch. Jenkins admitted that he did run out of gas in December last year. Pouha has played solid in the playoffs.

Last year's Jets were different than this year's and not just because of the scheme. The defensive personnel is very different too.

It's impossible for us to really judge what is the result of scheme and what is the result of talent and execution. I mean, the last time that BB had a corner anywhere near Revis' ability to work with (Law in '03) the Pats' defensive scheme didn't seem so passive and slow.

I disagree with that, the Pats played a bunch of lameass offenses this year making their BS stats look better than they should be IMO.
When they played a good offensive team, they got burnt with that LAMEASS OLDASS BENDDONTBREAKPIECEOFCRAP Defense.
I hope that gets shelved for the rest of my life!!
Billy thinks sitting back and making the opposing team run a ****load of plays until they make a mistake is the right move......funny, NOONE in the playoffs plays that CRAP, and we'd be OUT even if we had won last week.

We don't have the players that can MAKE a BIG play anymore(FORGET INTS thrown right in the hands, they aren't what I'm looking for), and that is Bills fault.
He needs to quit screwing around looking for a gem(and MISSING CONSTANTLY) and take the definite good player!!
