Defensive Line - scouting the prospects

There is some Youtube stuff out there on him that is pretty good. He isn't perfect but then again who is? He IS a very rare combo of size and speed that I think we should take a really good look at. What also isn't clear is if he is better off adding 15 lbs. and playing 3-4 DE or losing 10-15 lbs. and playing OLB. I think Mayo is in on this one with me.
I know Mayo loves him (which always gives me pause :p ), but I haven't looked that close because I've assumed he'd be gone long before NE was up.

For whatever reason his stock seems to be dropping, I'm not sure why. Outside of the DUI I haven't heard too many negatives on him. I would like to be his official flag bearer I love this guy for us.

If his stock is dropping that much I'll have to get some research in, I fully expect BB to target a 5-tech DE in round one and had Odrick and then Wooton penciled in, with a possible NT move (pending Wilfork's situation) of Dan Williams. Good thing I haven't started using my crayon yet. ;)

Well that is what I think is so intriguing about Dunlap. Is he a natural 5 or a potential OLB? Either way the guy fills a huge need. I can't post hyperlinks yet but if you look on youtube the one thing that stood out to me in the FSU and Tennesse games was that teams either didn't or couldn't run to his side. I would like to note the only game Florida lost he didn't play and they got run all over.

Also, I like Graham for some of the same reasons, if OLB doesn't work out could he swing inside as a SILB? Its at least a possibility, which, for me makes him more valuable than a Kindle, JPP, or Sapp.

I sure would like to be in Hawaii right now! Dunlap seems to be one of those polarizing players this year that people either love or hate. I only saw him play in a couple of games this year and he seemed to me to be around the play at the end but not actually involved in many of them. Another link for you. The combine and interviews with his coaches may go a long way towards his evaluation.

From the main forum and cross posted to Linebackers too...

Looking at QB Sacks vs. Winning A Title : Ian's New England Patriots Blog

Always helpful to have corroborating stats. My guess is that, if it were possible to factor in pressures and hits, it would strengthen the correlation.

It might also be useful to look at teams that may have been in the top ten or so in all pass-rushing stats that also failed to make the playoffs and then look for additional factors that are not related to offensive production, lack thereof, offensive turnovers, etc.

Stop! Stop! You are overtaxing both of my brain cells now... :bricks:

Have you guys taken a good look at Everson Griffen? There's no way a man of his size should be able to move that fast and also be agile enough to pull spin moves at 6'3 275 lbs. He looks like a freak of nature! Is he a possible Elephant Back/Mcginest replacement? The other cool thing is USC seemed to be able to flip him interchangebly and play him at either RDE to LDE. It threw me off because sometimes watching the vid because I'd expect him to be coming from one side, but he'd be coming from the other side instead! Versatility is a plus!

And is it just me or does he seem to play bigger than 6'3? What's his arm length? Or maybe it's just that the Ohio State players in the clip are just short? LOL.

Wow. I don't know what tape he was watching but I completely disagree. I haven't seen too many people his size move like he does.

He does move well. Doesn't make too many tackles and doesn't seem like a very motivated football player. Just kind of coasts...often runs to the tackle but doesn't actually put his head and shoulders in it. Just watches it. But he looks good moving to the action.

Thanks Box, I guess the million dollar question is whether Pryor, Wright are capable of playing at 3-4 end. If not (and I am not sold) then the Patriots have more holes than I thought.

3-4 DE - ?
OLB/DE - multiple spots to fill
CB - More please

Rebuilding the front seven is the first step towards my happiness.

Wright has been a solid reserve who can string together several games in relief of an injured starter, but hasn't been tested through a whole season as the primary. Bru alleged Wright hasn't put it all together consistently yet, just flashed potential - if that's the case maybe he's one of these guys who needs to be locked into a position for things to come together...and maybe he's a career reserve. :confused2: I've loved him as a reserve and a passing down specialist, he's currently good value there.

Pryor is an interior guy, despite all his quickness and technique those long armed Tackles are going to own him in the run game. He's an emergency 5-tech as I see things, a solid NT reserve, and another delight on passing downs. Maybe he steps up his NT play this season, maybe he proves to be too quick for the long armed tackles and gets inside their reach consistently - for now he is what we saw last season - damned good and not the answer.
