    Let's here from those who think that
    1) resting players loses a team its edge
    2) the key to winning isn't a great offense
    3) the bye week doesn't mean much
    4) the first seed and home field advantage doesn't mean much
    ===============================================
    What I learned was
    A) that no matter how good your offense, you have to take care of the football. 6 fumbles and 2 interceptions is ONE too many. After all, Favre could have walked for ten yards and likely won the game.
    B) getting too many defensive backs injured puts you in a position to lose games against Manning and Brees
    ==================================================
    Yes I understand that it was the great NO defense tha made the difference, giving up only how many yards and points???

    Can't really draw conclusions from single games IMO. Jets played pretty well, but the Colts are a better team. The Vikings just fumbled the game away.

    Over the long haul, balanced teams with great defenses probably perform better in the playoffs relative to the regular season.

    Still doesn't mean a great offense can't get off and bury anybody, but i think great defenses finding a way to stop and disrupt an offense is a playoff staple.

    You just can't credit a defense with causing 6 fumbles, that's lack of focus.

    We have now had a thread that *everything individually* wins championships. After game one it was OL. Jeez, people, it's a combination of all the ingredients, there's no one magic bullet.

    Have a look at our 2004 payroll breakdown compared to our 2009 payroll breakdown.

    Most of our money is committed to the offense now.

    We arn't the team that won those superbowls.

    Defense does win championships, the AFC champs have given up 20 points in two games, their offense has been on Fiyaaa though. For the first Time since 1993 both number one seeds are going to the superbowl...

    Did I really need to mark this thread as sarcasm?

    I do NOT believe that defense alone wins championships. That is what so many have posted for so many years.

    I do indeed believe that championships are won by a large combination of factors. Personally, I believe the biggest predictor of success among good teams is the quality and play at the quarterback position. One team was outclassed today, the team without a top quarterback. The other three are championship teams. And yes they much more than a great quarterback.

    I been saying it all along.If this team comes back with the same defensive line, they arent going anywhere.Get a DE from the draft or FA.

    Quite often a post contains more information than the title.

    I have no clue, I'm just tired of "X wins championships".

    The best TEAM wins championships.

    The best teams with coaching as well.I cant harp at how terrible our scheme has been at times.This has been a dink and dunk team with Welker at the slot.WR need is a must in the draft.

    Yes, I remember, the 2001 was the best TEAM of all time. The Front Office will decide what priorities to set in builing a team with the best chance at succeeeding in the division, the playoffs and in winning another Super Bowl, as it soes every year.

    My guess is that their priorties and evaluations will be very different from most here. While I agree that there is no one "X" that wins championships, I do think that saying that the best TEAM wins championships just indicates that everything is important, and gives us little help in focusing priorities.

    The majority of our "pass rush" comes from the OLB position not the DE. Yes we need a Pass rusher or two but I'd like to see more pressure from the ILb position becuase it takes away the abilty to step up into the pocket.

    The NFL has totally changed. It's not the league it once was. It favors passing so much now that you need 4 receivers. A fullback is a luxury no one can afford. Some teams have two RBs on the entire roster.

    And, because it's such a passing league, there are certain positions that are of extreme importance. QB, pass rushing DE or OLB, and CB/Safety.

    WR is important too, but I'm of the opinion that the offenses have so much advantage that you simply need mediocre receivers in numbers so that the defense has to spread itself thin. Some of these guys doing well for the Saints and Vikings were formerly considered busts. Mid-rounders like Garcon and Collie won the game today.

    This tells me the premium positions are QB, DE/OLB, CB/S and then you need to grab at least 4 solid WRs (not world beaters, just average solid guys like Collie and Garcon).

    That's how I would build a team anyway.

    The Colts are constructed well with Manning, Wayne, Collie, Garcon, Dallas Clark, two premium pass rushers in Freeney and Mathis.

    But they can be beaten in a number of ways.
