Improve rush part of the defense? That's an understatement of the year. How about having one to begin with. I'm almost missing Mike Vrable at this point.

Re: Dean Pees on the Defense - Blitz questions.

I hate Peas as a DC.......I don't care what anyone says since he took over the defense has gone completely basic and passive. Does anyone remember how RAC use to move guys around and actually blitz? You would see DL standing or 2 DT's and all LB's. You see absolutely nothing from the NE defense that looks confusing as a spectator compared to seasons before.

Also this guys defense SUCKS against 3rd downs and only seems to be getting worse and more predictable.

A 2 man rush on 3rd and what 12 against a rookie QB? Cmon dude what the hell. I'd think to blitz and make him think quickly or take the checkdown for short yardage. Same dang crap against the Jets and every other team last year. THEY HAVE NOT IMPROVED in that area.........the Bills converted a bunch of 3rd down plays too. Guys also need to remember that Dean Peas was only a college coach before taking over as DC with only 1-2 seasons under his belt.

The Jests were 3/11 on 3rd down conversions.
The Jests were forced to kick FGs on 2/3 redzone opportunities.
The Jests managed 254 yards of total offense.
    The Jests scored 16 points.
All at their place, with the fanbase whipped into a frenzy and thinking it was their Superbowl.

Think about it. Are you really going to stand on your soapbox and call for someone's head with stats like these starting you in the face?

Now if you were ranting about the Special Teams I could understand it. Or even the Offense. But ranting on the defense after this game? Makes very little sense.

Re: Dean Pees on the Defense - Blitz questions.

I agree that Dean Pees is horrible. I know his D had one or two years with statistically many sacks, but the D hasn't been able to generate any meaningful pressure in important defensive situations since Crennel was here.

Sanchez is a rookie QB in his second ever NFL game, after playing only 16 college games, and Pees only pass rushes with 4+ guys only THREE times???

Re: Dean Pees on the Defense - Blitz questions.

Prairie, did you see the Jets offensive stats in the 2nd half? We couldn't stop them. Look at Sanchez' passing stats, he completed about 75% of his passes, as a rookie QB in his second ever NFL game.

Funny how we have a top-2 QB and Brady was blitzed constantly, yet against a rookie QB we send more than 4 rushers only three times the entire game at Sanchez.

Hence the word 'almost'. I agree that his time was done but at least you could count on him to catch a TD in redzone....:D

Re: Dean Pees on the Defense - Blitz questions.

Pees is a bum, seems like hes afraid to put pressure cause he does not want to leave the defense at risk to give up a big play. In the last two years I have never seen such a basic vanilla defense in the BB era, it is way too predictable. The defense doesnt excite the players or fire them up in anyway it seems like, they actually seem bored lol.

Re: Dean Pees on the Defense - Blitz questions.

It's almost comical because the last time Dean went blitz happy it cost us a Lombardi.

There was a quote by Vrabel regarding the defensive communications comment BB made that was insightful if you're open to insight. He said sometimes delays were the result of lag time while BB decided if they were going to blitz. This is Bill's defense, never was RAC's or Erics or Deans. None of them are defensive guru's hired to install or develop a defense. They were caretakers and implementors of Bill's defense. He's the one who makes the call prior to formulating the game plans each week as to what approach he feels is best suited given the opponent and his own roster. I'm sure he has his reasons, too, only we will likely never know them. Could be he feels aspects of this D in transition are not yet capable of success if we attempt to sustain blitzes or it could be Ernie has some data that says it doesn't generally work as well as most folks assume.

And facing facts if the offense had been able to finish drives early or even sustain them into FG range late, or the ST not handed Sanchez the ball near mid field over and over, the D would have worked just fine.

Re: Dean Pees on the Defense - Blitz questions.

What this brilliant poster is insinuating, is that a moronic 9-man blitz which failed in 2007, somehow demonstrates that blitzing is folly.

What cost us a Lombardi, by the way, was needing a FG, having all 3 timeouts to drive 40 yards, and ending a game with 4 straight slow developing hail mary's.

Re: Dean Pees on the Defense - Blitz questions.

I hear ya, and I was frustrated at times too, but overall I thought the defense was the least of our problems. They also came up pretty big late in the game, if you recall, giving the offense several chances to get the tying score.

Two things about blitzes - they're high risk plays, and you need good M2M cover DBs to do it. The Jests have a shutdown corner, which really really opens up a lot of opportunities for them to blitz. We had Ty Law back in the days when we blitzed a lot more than we do now, and it was OK to leave him on an island out there. I'm not too comfortable with our current crop of DBs being left to fend for themselves right now, are you?

PManning torched the Dolphins' blitz last night. I remember some Superbowl blitzes against Delhomme and EManning that didn't exactly work out as planned. It's a risky strategy to blitz that much, and sometimes you get burned. Now Sanchez is no Manning, so maybe more pressure would have helped. It certainly kept Brady from being effective this week. I'm just saying, it's not always a black and white decision to go that route on defense.

Re: Dean Pees on the Defense - Blitz questions.

    1. I agree the D was generally solid, but against a rookie QB why not blitz more? Their rookie QB torched us in the 2nd half.

    2. I highly doubt that our lack of blitz, and the Jets heavy blitzing, is simply due to who you have at corner. Leigh Bodden is impressive as a press corner so far, and we were going against a rookie QB in his second-ever NFL game. We have also not blitzed much in any of the years Dean Pees has been coordinator, it's more his preference than any personnel related issues. Why not challenge the rookie Jets QB, the obvious weakness on that offense?

Re: Dean Pees on the Defense - Blitz questions.

If the Jets played our style of D last week we would of scored 50 points. The Jets D made one of the smartest QB's in the league look confused & gun shy with all their different looks on D. Yet we play straight up 4 DL pass rush for the entire game against a rookie QB??

Re: Dean Pees on the Defense - Blitz questions.

The Ravens and Steelers bring a lot of pressure, with only average CBs. I admit that Ed Reed and Troy Polamalu help, but that doesn't change things. The Giants' CBs aren't world beaters, either.

Re: Dean Pees on the Defense - Blitz questions.

Why would Pees try the Blitz when he has no real talent at LB without Mayo? - You have to have the guys who are capable in order to do it more often.

You should not have to blitz to constantly get pressure on the QB,In a few games this year of other teams, I saw sacks made with only 3 man line and not in a blitz package

You need talent to get to the QB,No one in the front 7 except for Banta-Cain has shown anything consistent.

Yes,I said 7th rounder and SF reject Banta Cain has been the only threat at getting to the QB consistently...Thats pathetic,Especially when you have a high profile pass rusher like Adalius out there.
