I have high hopes for him this year, I hope it's not serious. He really needs to shake the injury bug.

Thomas left the practice
My moles tell me that tight end David Thomas left the practice field with an apparent injury. Not much more to offer as I didn’t see it.

Tight end David Thomas left the practice in the early going – under his own power but with a member of the team’s training staff – and did not return.

Blech, hope this doesn't turn out to be something serious...was also hoping he'd have a 'breakout' year...
Breakout year? He hasn't been on the field more than a couple games. Doesn't he have to have a couple regular years before he can have a "breakout" year

I hope he's alright. Our passing game could really use the presence of a tight end this year. So could our running game...

People seem to think he has amazing potential because he made that one TD catch in 2006 and the National Championship Game against USC.

I don't see whats so special about him.

Neither do I but he did have a nice game against Jacksonville at the end of the 2006 season on Christmas Eve.

I agree, that's why I put it in 'quotes'...to me a 'breakout' year for him is being on the field and just being a pro football player for an entire year. Sorry if my tongue and cheek didn't make themselves more apparent; I don't even have high hopes for the guy, but getting hurt after the coaches have shown at least some interest in him for a few years is a bummer, we don't even get to see if he's worth the roster spot or not if he's hurt again. I hope it's nothing serious, if only for the opportunity to evaluate his gameday capabilities...let us know if we need to develop another TE seriously or not...

Ok, it is far, far too early to predict a breakout year for Thomas especially if he is injured again, but the guy did make some good plays when he did get limited playing time in 2006 most notably when he got 83 yards and a TD vs. Jacksonville. It is a far way from him being the next Antonio Gates, but it was promising.

I watched him a lot in college other than the Rose Bowl. Go to training camp and just watch him warm up and you will see how unbelievable his hands are. Definitely the best set of hands I've seen. But then again, I'm not that old...

 Better than Moss??

i'm a student at UT and watched him all through his senior year. he was vince young's safety valve all year. i figure if he could make vince look like a good passer, tom brady will have no trouble finding him. i hope its not serious.

I saw every game Dave played for UT and he is awesome. Fast, great hands, terrific blocker. I, too, hope this is nothing serious.

Hard to compare but they are a lot closer than you would think.
Why do you think Vince Young put up any passing numbers at all at UT? He had no WRs and he can't hit the broad side of a barn. Someone had to be helping him out!

My reaction on seeing this: :( :( :(

Amen. I hope he's back soon.

I hope he is OK...but I do think that his history in college shows he has great hands..he was really the gyt Young went to a great deal..High expectations?? Absolutely..but time will tell..
From what they said it was a lower leg/anklr injury..not sure if it was the same one that has been causing him trouble or not..

I'm still not convinced. Big deal he has great hands, does that make him a good blocker? We have more than enough guys for TB to pass it to {Randy, Wes, Watson, Faulk, Gaffney, Jackson}. I'm not as much interested as getting another receiving specialist as I am in hoping our tight ends can become better blockers.

He is injured a lot and even though he had a good game against Jacksonville I don't get why that is a reason to get so excited about him as if he is going to be a star player for us. Any WR or TE can have that one big game and then disappear for the rest of them.

I'm waiting for him to bring some consistent production before I even get excited about his potential.

Sorry dude, a lot of hypocrisy in this post. Consistent production before getting excited about potential and you just mentioned Chad Jackson as a guy for TB to pass it to?

I am NOT one of the Chad Jackson super fans out there, I too have been very disappointed in his extremely slow progression.

Take Jackson out of that and there are still plenty of people to throw the ball to. Its not like we are dying for more pass catchers like David Thomas.

What I mean is I would like to see some good play from Thomas whether its in his blocking or receiving. I want him to stay healthy very consistently and hopefully get some good playing time. I'm hardly excited for a guy who hasn't played much in Dave Thomas, kind of like Chad Jackson.

You understand this is a bit of a paradox, right?
