Today a bewildered Dale Arnold offered up this doozy: "Can someone tell me why there are any defensive players at 'passing camp'?" thereby opening his mouth and removing all doubt he is a football fool. This is another example of the older generation of NE sports media being out of touch with the national past-time. Amazingly, Arnold was once briefly the play by play voice of the Pats in the early 90s. I have a feeling he has designs on the same position again once Gil retires, but I hope the Krafts look in a different direction, toward someone who sees beyond down and distance, and offers more than Arnold's football platitudes and cliches. Listening to him embarass himself while interviewing our boys during the season is a truly painful experience. Unfortunately, the program director has extended Arnold's contract, so we'll have to endure more of WEEI's Mr. Rogers.

At least he has Holly to balance the show.

And why the hell are receivers at "passing" camp? It ain't "catching" camp, ya know!

I almost drove my car into a wall on Tuesday when he said "Jeremy Jacobs would spend above and beyond to help the Bruins win a championship but he is not allowed to because of the salary cap."

What? Maybe is was an exact opposite segment and he and Holly were making statements that were purposely false and the exact opposite of reality.

For the longest time I though Butch Stearns and John Dennis were the two most uninformed people in the Boston sports media but after listening to Ned Flanders he may have a claim to the title.

I get what you're trying to say in the title of the thread, but a savant is someone who is gifted in a certain matter. The term 'idiot savant' refers to someone who is of low intelligence but is very skilled in certain fields. I believe the title you meant to use was 'football idiot'. :)

But yeah for someone who covers sports on a daily basis as his job you would hope that he would have some idea that passing camp is more than the QBs practicing their throwing at some cardboard cutouts.

I believe the use of "savant" was perfect for sarcasm purposes.

Actually, I believe that g-fresh was drawing attention to the sarcastic use of the word 'savant' in an ironic way.....hold on a minute....

    He said that???!?!?!?!?!?!?! OMFG!!!!!!!

Dale is a dope of monumental porportions. He sounds like he's a super nice guy and all, but he's a tardo extrordinare. I'll never forget when he said he thought Derek Jeter was "probably" a Hall of Famer. HA! Tony Mass came on at 2pm and undressed him for that. He constantly makes excuses for the Bruins despite 30+ years of history that proves otherwise.

Remember when there was a big play, and he would say: "... and the crowd goes Ickybaluky!". I used to love that.

You're serious? You really don't know why there are defensive players at passing camp?

I remember a couple years ago he referred to Hynes Ward as Ward Hynes. It blows my mind that Dale is in the position that he is...a high paid sports talk show host...if he doesnt have any stats in front of him, he knows nothing.

As bad as Dale's comments were, listening to him talk football is better than listening to Big Show guys like Tony Maz or Sean McAdam talk football. Arnold know a decent amount about football. He was the radio announcer for the Pats for a stretch. He just says some stupid things some of the times.

Did he exacerbate the mistake by misspelling it in print aswell.

That would be a truly embarrassing double. :p

I think he only did it once (and was lampooned for it for years) on a Flutie touchdown in 1988.

Growing up and moving to Boston I loved hearing WEEI. How that feeling went away quickly. Now its the same crap over and over. Now that I have better acquainted myself what other national and local media are built around, I have to say WEEI really blows..

Two things really help Dale Arnold out.

    1. The guests that appear on the show. Who ever lines them does a great job.

    2. With the addition of Holley

nothing tops my memories of listening to Pete Sheppard making a jackass of himself. When he was being interviewed by those guys in Tennessee and they asked him about who plays for BC?
"well, well, ...of course ( cough) there are so many...um, to choose from..."

i was crying i was laughing so hard.
