No one has the flair for the dramatic irony like our very own Welfare Queen, Curt Schilling:

Rhode Island scrambles to save Curt Schilling’s game company
    5/15/2012 6:06pm

"......State officials became alarmed about the financial health of 38 Studios “when a loan-guarantee payment payment of about $1.125 million was not made, which put the company into some default,” Rhode Island House Speaker Gordon D. Fox told the Providence Journal. In 2010, Rhode Island offered $75 million in loan guarantees to Schilling’s company, which moved from Maynard to Providence and promised to create hundreds of jobs.

......Michael Pachter, a video game industry analyst for Wedbush Securities in Los Angeles, said that 38 Studios would probably get about half the revenue generated by sales of the game, or about $30 million – enough to enable 38 Studios to make its loan payments. “I cannot believe that they are borderline insolvent,” said Pachter. “That makes no sense to me at all......”

    Yes.

And a deep disdain for political hypocrites, in particular.

Schilling represents the very heights of the class.

well it is rather odd that a self professed strong minded republican got in bed with the very liberal RI democrats. Not odd really - Schill sold his soul to the devil and now the devil has become Schill. Rhode Island ... my state ... biggest little idiot state in the union should be the song. We suck because we make one bad decision after the other over here.

    Huh, neat angle there.

I'm glad that "arch conservative Republican" Deval Patrick knew better than to enable poor ol' Curt.

BTW....What party did Governor Carcieri belong to?

    It's hilarious.

He evidently loves hypocritical Welfare Queens. :D

Yes, it is everyone ELSE'S fault for not loving Curt Shilling for preaching against taxes and stimulus while grabbing the donuts with both arms.

PT Barnum said it right. There is one born every minute.

From the onset this was the most idiotic move amongst a whole bunch of idiotic moves in RI, what could go wrong???

A pitcher, with no experience running a company, uses his star power to make claims that he had a great idea for a video game company, the state loans him 75 million dollars, backed by the public and then production slows and they cannnot produce the second part of a multi part product...

He missed a million dollar installment on his loan, why don't you pay it yourself Mr. Shilling???

He will tap dance and do the Shilling "two step", and at the end it will be someone's elses fault...

Between this and the city of Central Falls believing that putting a privately contracted federal prison in their downtown would save their city, idiocy at its best...

I really wish Shill never pitched the bloody sock game in 04 because I really want to say he's a POS douche, but espn played the whole 30 by 30 episode of that series last night and reminded me of my man-love for him.

LOL! Did he delete that post you quoted? I don't see it.

    too funny.

Looks like he came back, deleted it, then reposted it.

I love the use of the "fair weather fan" connotation. As if Schilling becomes infallible as yet another RW blowhard all because of his athletic achievements.

The problem is his game premise was huge 10 years ago, not now.

I just know that if Shilling were some kind of devout liberal and been involved with this, that shmessy would have never posted it.....

so one must consider the source

    And not the content??

It is not so much about Shilling, but the idiocy of a state getting involved in a contract with this attention whore, who has no proven business acumen or experience..

Oooooooh, I'm sorry, that was incorrect Icy.

But for our runners up we have a year's supply of Turtle Wax and Rice-a-Roni, that San Francisco treat.

GoLocalWorcester | Business & Real Estate | NEW: Is Curt Schilling’s 38 Studios Going Broke?

"....But the size of the guarantee became a hot button issue during the 2010 governor’s campaign when several candidates—including Governor Chafee— questioned the terms of the deal, which was supported by former Governor Don Carcieri and EDC executive director Keith Stokes. In a WPRI debate a month before the election, Chafee said his calls to let the next Governor make a decision on any deal with 38 Studios had “fallen on deaf ears” and suggested he would considering filing suit against Carcieri if the company went under.

“I guess I can best advise Governor Carcieri to pay up on his premiums for his insurance, because there is an avenue for those aggrieved to come after someone for fiduciary irresponsibility,” Chafee said at the time. “I suppose that’s the last recourse.”

    Wrongo.

If he was a liberal who espoused something for others and then did a 180 for himself I would be all over it.

I ripped divorce lawyer John Edwards all over the place here. I also ripped Mr. Law and Order Spitzer for being a complete and loud hypocrite.

    Public hypocracy is public hypocracy.

Nice attempt at deflection though. Do you have any salient points about the subject of THIS thread?

Just saw an interesting note on twitter about this (not sure if it is accurate).

RI has a pop of 1,051,302.

If Curt's company goes under, it would average $106.53 per person to pay for it.

I find it crappy that the general public of RI would have to take money out of their pockets to prop up a millionaire's Adventures in video games.

We get on corporations all the time for their boneheaded investments that are risky and end up losing money; leading to bailouts and such.

Seems RI played fast and wild with their $$ to attract business to the state. Not to mention, as Hebeill pointed out, seems Curt's game idea was a decade late....and apparently a couple dollars short.

    I wouldn't blame Chafee, however.

Read the previous post's link - - he was certainly shouting from the rooftops about this AT THE TIME - - even threatening to SUE Carcieri if things went bad.

    This could get interesting.

The government shouldn't be in the investment banker business. Shilling should have gone to private investors instead of the tax payers for loans.

As to the business they are hiring people in RI currently according to the website. The initial game has been successful so far in terms of sales. The company is bringing a MMOG out, that is where the real $$$$ is. If they can incorporate the battle gameplay from the SP game there will be very successful and won't have to worry about paying loans off, if they delay too much with the MMOG they will be in trouble.

My post wasn't dealing with blame. Just that waste and bad deals for the taxpayers of RI sucks.

Waste (in a public sense) is what I personally have against some much of what our gov does...but that is a different topic beyond this one :)

If they are hiring and the initial game has been deemed successful in terms of sales, then he is a CROOK for not paying his debts on time without first notifying his creditor (the state) ahead of time.

Your explanation just put him in an even WORSE light as being a public trough succubus.

This was a vastly unpopular deal from the get go.. and it only gets worse as time goes on. The star power of Shilling with no business experience, was a bad combo from the start.. he had and idea and RI backed him with 75 million dollars in loans..

To think that a video game novice can enter the sweepstakes with players like EA, Nintendo, Activision etc. is pure folly.

This is the legacy of 16 years of Republican Governors who supposedly knew how business worked.. but, apparently did not.

If he was a truly honorable man, would have made the payment out of his deep pockets... and figured it out later.

Agreed Darryl - goose and the gander again. He, from any reasonable estimate, has more than enough coin to cover costs and loan payments.

Schilling is the biggest loud mouth, self absorded, me, me, me guy around. Never liked him, never will. Bloody sock my arse. Most overrated BS in sports history. Some ketchup splattered on a sock is what some say, and while I doubt that's the case, would anyone be surprised if that were actually true? I wouldn't be.

Bingo. The government should be an investor in a business. They shouldn't be involved with them at all for the most part. They are in charge of taxpayer money, and not investment capital.

I heard a report that the problem with the company is cash flow, as opposed to product. I don't how accurate the report is, so who knows, but from what was said, the company has put out a very successful game already, and has a second on the way. The second is where the cash problem rests. The second game is a huge undertaking that is designed along the lines of a WOW, where there is an entire network (or world) where everyone plays in unison. Development is either behind, underfunded, or both. How true this is, and how much spin that is to hide a deeper problem, I don't know. I mention this because they could be hiring, and not paying the loan, because they want to complete the development of this game with whatever funds they have on hand.

The lesson that should be learned here, is that the government shouldn't be an investor in private businesses. Not when it's risk is assumed with taxpayer dollars.
