Honestly, I believe you should list Nickelback as its own position. In today's pass happy league, nickelback is pretty much a starting position. Dime back... not so much. Usually the backup nickelback or a backup safety is good enough to play dime.

I hadn't really thought about it in those terms but you're right. It's like baseball with their "set-up" and "closer" relief pitchers. Essentially the offense and defense have a 1st and 2nd down formation, and then a 3rd down lineup. Nickel backs and 3rd down RBs may not be starters but they are still on the field for plenty of snaps, and also are often integral parts of special teams too.

Also, a typical Coach B strategy will be to deploy a 4-3 base defense for 2 straight games depending upon the opponent. My point, especially the way Coach B likes to mix up schemes in the past, is there can be a few different 'base' defenses (or even offenses like a double TE / single wideout for a whole game or more) that he'll deploy more times than we'll know until it happens.

So, I just wanted to initially list the standard NE Patriots starting offensive (single TE / double wideout) and defensive (3-4) lineups with backups (the '3-4' because that is the staple '2 gap' defense of Coach B's and how the team is developed). I didn't want to get into hypothetical lineups with the various packages since there are quite a few plus a consenus could not be easily obtained on, for example, who is the true nickel back. Just trying to keep it simple.

For now, I will list the starters and backups along with those specifically on the team for Special Team purposes only. And I know that I won't be 100% accurate so disagree with some specific reference sources such as last year playing time or coaches' speeches..etc. Plus I'll update the players' numbers at another time.
Special Teams only is particularly difficult. What should I use as the consensus that a player is a pure ST? Less than 10% playing time from last year? To grey of an area for me so please give me feedback or player(s) or rule(s).

We could go with just three ILBs too, since our starters at OLB can play ILB and we may have servicable depth out there in Woods and Crable.

It's a goodpoint: Mayo was definitely drafted to be the starting ILB (of course he is versatile too for OLB) as soon as possible. However, to be consistent and go by the adage 'ready for action', Hobson gets the nod since a rookie, before the 1st PRE-season game has even played, can't be considered a starter over a vet who knows the NFL (Coach B's) 3-4 defense and most likely has a head start on the playbook. So, we must 'depth' accordingly until the coaches play it differently throughout the pre-season. Same can be said for Crable / Wheatley who both can possibly become 'starters' at somepoint this year...

Is Hobson starter material? I question whether he'll even make the team. He was signed as an afterthought at the veteran minimum. I guess a lot depends on how Seau and Bruschi look in camp. We could go with just three ILBs too, since our starters at OLB can play ILB and we may have servicable depth out there in Woods and Crable.

I sort of think Hobson was signed as insurance going into the draft. But BB got his guy, so???

I dunno.....just thinking aloud.

He is definitely starter material.

I definitely it will happen but, standard hierarachy for any rookie before the 1st game, is to slot the rookie in as backup. Especially with Hobson obtained from a 3-4 defense with experience. There will definitely be a 'break-in' / learning period that Mayo will need. The only question, it appears to be, is how long.
I would actually prefer Merriweather start but tis depth chart is based upon the majority of the season and at the end of the season. But I can see it switched even before the 1st game. Let's see how TC / pre-season games go.
