If you want to blame Brady for anything, its failure to close out the game by not making enough plays to move the chains and the OC for not finding a way to close it out by picking on the opponents weakness (player or position).

In the end its almost always the defense that chokes until they turn blue.

Yes, it's partly Brady's fault that the New England Patriots haven't gone undefeated since his return from ACL surgery.

There it is. What have we just accomplished by pointing this out?

On the last two touchdowns by the Seattle Seahawks, led by the immortal Russell Wilson, the defense gave up a 51-yard pass with 15 yards tacked on for roughing the passer that led to the TD making it 23-17.

Two Seattle drives later, Wilson connected with Golden Tate on a 46-yard TD pass.

The lead was blown by the defense, not the offense.

Re: Patriots, Brady: Choking on leads since 2009

I don't know about since 2009, but I do know I don't want to see anymore close games because them's the kinds we lose. It's getting so that whoever has the ball last is the winner and we aint got the ball last in any of our close games from the Superbowl till yesterday.

Yesterday we needed a lousy 3 points to ice the game and had all the time in the world to achieve that---and failed. So 23-10 became... yup just what we all feared... a 23-24 loss. that second field goal that we were counting on after the last field goal just never came. gettin so I dont want no more close games because we are finding ways to lose them all. blow them out, if that's the only way you can win.

so.....when up 13 points halfway through the 4th quarter, we should not be able to expect the #1 offense in the NFL to control the ball long enough? or they simply keep throwing incompletions to save the opponent time outs?

I guess our new Pats get pretty discombobulated in close games.

When up 13 points halfway through the 4th quarter against a team that's only put up 10 points to that point, you should expect, generally:

A defense not to give up 14 points.

It's pretty basic stuff, unless you're looking for nits to pick.

Again, the team has lost a combined total of 14 regular season games since Brady's return from ACL surgery, and 6 of the 14 games were in his first season back. Crying about Brady's performance in the last 5 minutes of a few games is about as asinine as it gets.

Then again, this is Patsfans.com, where the Homers would defend the Kenneth Sims draft pick all over again, and the Criers actually look for reasons to attack Tom Brady and Wes Welker.

Re: Patriots, Brady: Choking on leads since 2009

They've been blowing leads since sooner than that.

    They blew the Colts lead!!!

Oh, and Brady almost blew the Carolina Super Bowl lead. Had that team down on the ropes and they came back and went ahead!!!!

Re: Patriots, Brady: Choking on leads since 2009

but you're not expecting the offense that gained 480 yards to gain a few more on at least one drive? when its needed most?

yep pretty basic stuff.....we knew the defense has issues before the game. BB knew he was going to have to put wilson and ebner out there........with all that ability and money spent on the offensive side of the ball, you'd figure that they'd earn it

I'm expecting a team that's put up 480 yards against one of the better defenses in the league to have done enough to win when they've given a 13 point lead to the defense facing one of the league's worst offenses.

Yes, basic stuff. No matter how often you repeat the inanity of blaming Brady, it's never going to morph into the right gripe to be making.

Yeah, people are expecting Brady to stop them from scoring by playing offense.

Even with the offensive mistakes the lead still should have been enough to win.

Every time the Patriots are up by less than a touchdown with around 2 minutes remaining, they always seem to lose. And it's started since the '07 SB. Ugh.

When you blow a lead it means your ahead in the first place. So its the defense not brady or the offense. The D has been going down hill since '06. So for the most part Brady the offense has won all those games because of Brady and the offense. But when it comes to crunch time in the playoffs rarely does that scheme work.

Isnt it the Defense which is supposed to Protect leads? So what this article is saying is BRADY HAS TO SCORE ON EVERY DRIVE OR THE PATS WONT WIN, AND SINCE HE DOESN'T SCORE A TD ON EVER DRIVE its his fault?????????????????????????? WTF

Re: Patriots, Brady: Choking on leads since 2009

The Patriots have lost 3 times this season:

In 2 of those games, the Patriots had the lead, only to see the defense fail to hold it on the opponent's last "drive" of the game (Drive in quotes because of the kneel downs in Seattle).

In the 3rd loss, the Patriots scored what should have been the game winning TD, only to have it called back on a terrible holding call. They then got into position to attempt a field goal, which was missed by the kicker.

Last season, the Patriots lost 3 games:

In the Giants game, the offense got the team leads of 13-10 and 20-17 in the 4th quarter. The Patriots defense surrendered touchdowns on the last two Giants drives of the game.

The Steelers game was just a thorough whooping of a team that was not suited for their opponent that week.

The Buffalo game was legitimately a Brady issue with the pick-6 in the 4th but, even there the defense surrendered 10 additional points in the quarter and couldn't prevent the Bills from marching 70 yards down the field to set up the winning touchdown.

In 2010, the Patriots lost 2 regular season games:

One was the Jets game, where the Patriots struggled on offense for most of the day, Brady threw 2 INTs, and then Brady got strip sacked when the Patriots were on the move with about 4 minutes to go in the game.

The other was the Browns game, where the last 5 minutes were essentially meaningless.

So, not counting his year recovering from ACL surgery, Brady has had the Patriots in position to win 4 of the 8 games (leads late or TD scored and called back and FG missed), position to tie 1 more of the 8 games, position to narrow the gap of 1 more of the 8 games, and had 2 games where the team had no realistic shot by the time the late 4th quarter came along.

But, yeah, let's blame Brady because of, basically, 0-1 games where he's been the lynchpin for 4th quarter losses in the past 3 years.

    Freaking brilliant. :bricks:

Re: Patriots, Brady: Choking on leads since 2009

There was 9:17 left in the 4th quarter when the Seahawks started the drive with the 66-yard play (51-yard reception plus 15 for roughing the passer.)

I agree with what you are saying, but even if the Seahawks were destined to make it 23-17, shouldn't it take the Seattle Seahawks more than 10 seconds to travel 66 yards? Seriously.

There's a fundamental issue when the outcome of the game is always the offense's job. Especially against the worst scoring offense in the NFL.

Brady and the offense - especially the offensive line - gave the defense a two-score lead in the 4th quarter and dominated the time of possession. The defense was fresh.

Re: Patriots, Brady: Choking on leads since 2009

    This is disingenuous.

After the midpoint of the second half, the Patriots tried running the ball.

    Not throwing incompletions.

Maybe you were secretly satisfied by those three straight runs that stalled the drive, but I wasn't.

Or maybe you liked it on the next series when they had two straight runs and forced the Seahawks to take timeouts, but with 3 minutes left, I didn't like that either.

This is the number one offense because of Tom Brady and the passing game. Make no mistake about that.

The intentional grounding penalties need to stop, a sack is better than the loss of down+ yards. This was the difference in the game IMO.
