Crable speaks

#2 in high school and #2 at Michigan.

Now he's 98 and he's not tight ... I say we give him the #2 and make it tight for him again.

Who is this "Shawn Crable" that you guys speak of? Regardless, it looks as if he's bulked up a bit...

If he can actually see the field this year and be an impact in the pass rush somehow, that would be absolutely great. The guy is still a complete anomaly though.

If he wasn't truly injured then I blame belichick for not playing him. He has an aversion to rookies, so he gets guys like burgess...how'd that work out? So instead of a rookie learning and making a few mistakes, we get a guy who doesn't make many mistakes, but just isn't very good.

Crable was incredible in college, scores of TFL and sacks. Why in the world is he suddenly no good? And don't give me the "can't set the edge", then make him a pass rushing specialist or something. Why did they draft him if he's so horrible? If I were him, and again, assuming his injury wasn't really a season ender if he even had an injury, I'd be kind of mad at having my first two seasons flushed down the toilet for me.

Belichick plays the best player period. Show me an aversion to playing a rookie when he deserves it?

Last year alone: Edelman, Vollmer, Chung, Butler all played a fair amount

That is my recollection as well.

Guyton played outside against baltimore i think and he got whacked abit by Oher. He is 242 long lanky fast guy .Against a 300 lb tackle he struggled.

mczenie is a thumper and him/mayo will man the middle with guyton as the coverage ILB. mcz is not fast enough but strong against the run .

Crable - no idea.

Crable said he is working to get over injuries to his leg, groin, and back.

Obviously, he'll need his health to earn a roster spot. If he's 100% by TC he and a draft pick will get a ton of snaps at the position. The team is in dire need of an upgrade on the edge, so competition will be created.

Here's to an injury-free TC and pre-season for both Crable and the rook.

I think it's a stock photo from last year, Kontra . I remember Crable being a bigger last year at camp and he did put some beef on the legs but they were still disproportionate to his upper body.

I know it's from last year. It's just that I didn't have the privilege of going to Pats TC last year, nor had I seen a photo from him. He did get bigger both in the upper body and in his legs, if you compare that pic to when he first arrived in New England, or when he was with Michigan. Personally, I hope he's spent his free time not only in the gym, but also studying the playbook.

I'll never forget the one and only time I've ever been to the Patriots training camp. Last summer I was visiting friends in Providence, and on a Sunday I made the drive up to the camp. It was the day Burgess first showed up. I sat on the grass overlooking the end zone (where the Ghost was kicking fieldgoals; I caught one of them and had to resist the urge to tuck it away and sprint out to my car ahead of the security guards :D ). During coverage drills, Crable ran stride for stride with TEs and even a couple WRs. I'd never seen anyone that big look that fluid in coverage. I watched him for a couple hours, and I think he's faster off the edge than either Burgess or Banta-Cain.

Even so, he can't seem to stay healthy. I don't know what the issue is, but I feel badly for him, and I hope that he 1) stays healthy, 2) sees the field, and 3) pushes for serious playing time by the end of the season. Who cares if he struggles to set the edge initially? Let him play passing downs and slowly ease him into the regular rotation as his technique and lower body strength improve. Regardless, I'm rooting for him; even if he doesn't make it out of camp and ends up on the street, I wish him well.

Would love to see Crable make it, I don't know whether he will or not but it would be a great story if he did after the hell he has been through the last two years.

interesting article.

I think we have all curbed our enthusiam on this kid but BB must see something in him to keep around when others are gone. Maybe its the state of the OLB position but I would think it would be more than just that.

I agree. I think it's quite possible that Belichick may feel that he simply hasn't been able to properly assess Crable's talents as of yet. Even though it's not too common for a player to get hurt back to back years, it does happen. I think it's very unlucky that Shawn had to go through this, and he very well may go on to have a great career still.

If I were BB, and I saw good talent in my pre-draft scouting + some nice technique in preseason, I may very well wait until I could properly assess my pick before I made up my mind one way or the other. I have a feeling Crable was never in any harm of being cut. Just think how bad it would suck if he went on to have a productive career, yet we let him go because of some bad luck/injuries, and never were able to even see what he could offer.

I think all of this talk of him being 'made of glass' etc is just us as fans, being impatient--myself included to some degree.

Tate. McKenzie. Crable.

We'll be lucky if one of these guys ends up significantly contributing, but I hope it ends up being Crable.

Just picking out two players, Sergio Kindle and Ricky Sapp, the numbers from the combine according to NFL draft scout are eerily similar :

40 Yrd Dash: 4.61
20 Yrd Dash: 2.70
10 Yrd Dash: 1.56
225 Lb. Bench Reps: 29
Vertical Jump: 28
Broad Jump: 09'03"
20 Yrd Shuttle: 4.55
3-Cone Drill: 7.29

40 Yrd Dash: 4.65
20 Yrd Dash: 2.69
10 Yrd Dash: 1.65
225 Lb. Bench Reps: 25
Vertical Jump: 36 1/2
Broad Jump: 09'10"
20 Yrd Shuttle: 4.53
3-Cone Drill: 7.26

40 Yrd Dash: 4.65
20 Yrd Dash: 2.62
10 Yrd Dash: 1.60
225 Lb. Bench Reps: 23
Vertical Jump: 34
Broad Jump: 09'06"
20 Yrd Shuttle: 4.41
3-Cone Drill: 7.29

Can you even guess which one is the better prospect based on the numbers ?

I know I'm dreaming but imagine that we have red shirts of Crable, McKenzie and Tate all coming back. Imagine they come through this year. Crazy.

BTW, Crable is the top set of numbers, Kindle the middle, Sapp the bottom.

Cool facts, what stood out to me is the bench reps where Crable put up more then both of the other players.

"Crable Speaks"

Well I guess the good news is that after that he didn't go on IR due to a vocal chord injury.

Yeah, strength wasn't his problem; he is quick and fast enough also but not very explosive, note his Vertical and Broad jumps.

In the end, Crable is as much of a prospect as McKenzie. At least Crable looked good in one preseason.

While I would like to Crable succeed, as of now, we have no one else inside but Mayo and Guyton.

In my opinion if I had to make a choice I'd put my faith on McKenzie rather than Crable. I don't see why Crable going on IR late in preseason puts him ahead of a McKenzie fluke rookie camp injury. If nothing else I'd rely on the guy that will have had 17 months to recover from one injury over the one that hasn't played in what will be three years due to his shin, groin, hamstring, knee, or whatever else has kept him off the field ever since the day he was drafted.
