Considering Belichick's successful track record in giving outsiders a second chance, any chance he does the same with SS Roy?

I'd give him a shot, but it would have to be majorly incentive based........he's become a liability in coverage, but then again, in the zone the pats employ, he may excel....

but he'd have to be willing to re-prove himself before any chance at good money

If people are going to whine about James Sanders being inadequate in coverage, why the hell would we want Roy Williams?

As someone put it--can Roy Williams make a tackle without trying to end a guy's career?

I wouldn't take him unless the Cowboys gave me a fourth just for taking him off their hands.

No thanks. Too limited in coverage. To much of a prima donna.

    :agree:

Williams is as bad in coverage as any safety I've ever seen.

I think I can say, without hyperbole, that Roy Williams is THE most overrated Pro Bowler in the HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSE. He's AWFUL. No way, don't touch him FOR FREE.

May be interesting for the hybrid safety/lb role Tank Williams was supposed to be playing, but not worth it I'd say.

Big difference Jack. As you and all of us know, J. Sanders cannot tackle as some imply. He is a liability in pass and lesser so, on the run. He is a great communicator to give him some due. Williams would be a far better tackler and harder hitter. So at the end of the day lets fairly rate them:

    Pass Coverage; Williams=D- Sanders=D-

    Run stopping ability; Williams=B+ Sanders=C

You choose, and my grades are fair and accurate. Give Sanders the nod on knowing the called defenses and where to line up. He loses points on knowing what his own angles on coverage are to the point of a D-.

Williams would be an Incomplete because I do not know that part of his game. Williams, though overrated, has a couple of Pro Bowls under his belt. He is bigger at the point of attack and in the box.

    Williams is still only 29.
In 2007 with only 13 starts he had 92 tackles and 5 PDFE and 2 INT.
In 2006 he had 62 tackles, 9 PDEF and 5 INT.

Again, being fair because our defenses differ, it would appear that Williams was by far the more productive player, but that can be an apparition.

I don't know. I would say he is an upgrade on Sanders and perhaps his coverage might be a little better than stated.

I bet you can sign Williams right now for what they overpaid (Sorry a dig. Couldn't help myself) Sanders for. Bet Williams starts over Sanders day one IMO.

Again, it'd be interesting if he could, you know, actually tackle anyone without getting called for a personal foul.

Don't really like him as a player but as of right now he's an upgrade to our roster in that area.

Williams absolutely blows in coverage. Anyone who claims not to like James Sanders isn't allowed to express any interest in this guy. His only skill is getting beaten so badly that he has to horsecollar guys, a move that was made illegal because a) it's dangerous, and b) he gets beaten so often that his name has become synonymous with this tackle. That should seriously tell you something.

    Hogwash.

Sanders is one of the best tacklers on the defense, and probably the most solid tackler in the secondary. D- in coverage? Are you smoking something today, DWToys, because that seems highly irrational. I'd give Sanders a B in coverage and an A- in run-stopping ability. The fact is that James Sanders is rarely out of position and hardly ever misses tackles. His main liability is taking poor angles in pursuit -- something I think is more or less coachable.

I confess I cannot grade out Williams' run-stopping ability since I haven't seen him play for a couple years now.

    Once again, hogwash.

If he really graded out as a D- in pass coverage, then he would not have been the starting FREE SAFETY for going on two seasons now (accounting, of course, for Harrison's inability to stay healthy)and would not have been re-signed to a three year contract for respectable coin. Lewis Sanders would've passed him on the depth chart last season if he were as bad as you say. Which he isn't. Not even close.

I think most people would say making the Pro Bowl is the very definition of the word overrated.

Roy Williams was BENCHED on third downs because he can't cover. Pat freakin' Watkins saw the field over Williams. That tells you all you need to know.

How often is James Sanders on the bench on third down?

Yeah, I'm sure they paid Sanders starting money so they could sign Roy Williams to starting money and have him start instead. Sounds like a recipe for fiscal success!

He couldn't cover a receiver in a phone box.

I wouldn't want him if he was paying us $8M a year.
