Ok here's the deal - in my opinion.

Yes - this scandal hurt us. I have been depressed since last Monday when the news broke. PATS were my claim to greatness! I loved flaunting them as my favorite team but you know what - people still hated them. Called them lucky, tuck rule, system QB, never won after Weiss and Crennel left, blah blah blah. Now they can easily say one thing - Cheats. It is horrible but it somethign we have to deal with.

However, on the plus side, I think deep down they all know that this was a farce. They will never say it but i am sure they believe it. If anything else comes out - then we might be doomed but as of now I think we have gotten out of jail so to speak.

What we need to do is get some good facts to counter the jealous whiners! Any suggestion? I can think of a few like

"Its not cheating, just a violation of rules - stealing signals is allowed"
"Jimmy Johnson said he did the same thing"
"If it helped us so much - how come we haven't won the past 2 years? How come we have lost to the Dolphins the last 3 yeras whenever we play them for second time".

Any other rejoinders would be welcome......

Simple fact is they were taping what an entire statium of people could watch. The only rule they broke was having a cameraman in the wrong place.

Actually our offense played pretty well - it was our defense that messed up.

What I've been telling noobs is that if only violating rules "outside the game" is cheating. Then we'll just have players intentionally rough the passer and injure QB's to win games. Thats not cheating.. right?

I just shrug and say "yeah, what's up with those cheaters?"
Completely diffuses the situation then I can interject questions like: "how does something like that even help them?" or "Why video tape something in plain sight?" etc etc. I end up with them commiserating rather than berating.

Like when the haters would line up to rub my face in it after the AFCC game last year, I would just reply: "Well, if you can't stop the run you can't win a playoff game." They'd just shut up or complain that I wasn't fun to tease.

I choked on my soda when I read this.

I work in an office with 60% Jets fans 30% Giants fans and 10% Philly fans. They beat a path to my door all day last week.

I just said, "Well, I guess they will just have to win 3 more Superbowls to prove people wrong".

This week, no one has made a peep.

I was disappointed at first, and even called it cheating. But in the last couple of days I've been convinced by listening to coaches and others that the Pats couldn't use the video to benefit in THAT game, and that coaches change their signals frequently enough that trying to anticipate what the signals would be NEXT game would most likely be fruitless. I am comfortable with the theory that BB was using the info to get a profile of a coaches tendencies and personality given certain game situations. I've changed my mind, BB wasn't cheating, but he did break a rule he was told specifically not to.

I love the analogy someone in another thread gave, BB jaywalked in front of a cop that had told him to stop jaywalking. Stupid, arrogant, deserving of punishment, but hardly cheating.

Time will tell what effect if any, this will have on his legacy.

Oh no - a loser Phin fan. Jeez - you guys cheated last year didn't you? How does it feel to be at the bottom - say hi to the Jets from our side.

In my opinion there are too many ways a team could make sure nobody could "steal" their signals, and use this against them. Mixing up the signals, having more than one coach send them out, wristbands, the list goes on and on.

To a certain extent, shame on the team that lets this happen. Does anyone think the Patriots would ever put themselves in a position to let someone else "steal" their signals? I really don't think so.

It blows my mind that this situation has gotten to where it is, a whole bunch of hysterical media folks and bitter opponents piling on. I've heard countless "theories" on how such a situation could benefit them, but none of these theorists really know exactly what goes on in a game.

I do wish BB would be more forthright, and explain why he did this. But we shouldn't hold our breath waiting, just have to accept that this lack of explanation does what is inevitable: Gives all the naysayers a chance to say anything they want.

Well, either a) everyone knew they were doing it, in which case coaches would have been protecting their signals, or b) everyone is lying about how they've been doing it forever. You can't have it both ways. And either way, no real massive competitive advantage.

Now they have the motivation to run the table. Thank you Jets.

And my favorite...."who cares...spies are cool!"

Why do people keep making threads about the "scandal" on here? Last time I checked the Pats play the Bills this weekend.

But Nick Satan was smart enough to do it legally.

Actually it's nice down here. Low expectations and all. Kinda relaxed...
