Could Volek be another Boller/Feeley?

Volek may start the game off well as NE plays conservatively while feeling him out.

But his nice run against some real crappy defenses has caused people to rate him way higher than he deserves. Hell, that was over three years ago. Maybe you see a nice story like Todd Collins every now and then, but does anyone think that story would have gone so pleasantly if NE was one of Washington's final few games?

Good point, not to mention that came crashing down pretty quickly on Collins in the WC Game with those two pick-sixes. Volek hasn't seen significant playing time in three years, and it's asking an awful lot for him to come in to the biggest game of the season and beat the Patriots.

Volek's a wildly inconsistent gunslinger with a live arm. AJ Feeley has the Patriots number, for some reason, so you can count him out. If anyone, Cleo Lemon might be the closest to Volek that you're going to see, and the Patriots handled him with relative ease twice this season. Of course, he was surrounded by a significantly worse team (though they both had Chris Chambers and very good RBs), but Volek is not a caretaker QB. He won't be able to match the Patriots score-for-score unless something goes very wrong.

Let's put it this way... who would you rather be facing in this game... Peyton Manning or Billy Volek?

Perspective is a wonderful thing. :)

That's exactly the way I see this one playing out. Volek will have a great game against our D on Sunday. They Pats will take away the run and leave the pass open for Billy. Hopefully he will make a mistake or two.

He seems very loose and confident. I would think he would have the potential to pull a Feeley or Boller. Th only difference is his lack of play time which may affect his decision making abilities..

What we should all keep in mind is that Belichick's greatest tangible strength is he ability to break down and analyze game tapes. He's been doing it forever - in utero wouldn't surprise me.

Boller and Freely benefited from a dearth of recent game tapes, although there were some - not enough to establish hard patterns. Volek may have similar good fortune. The ultimate difference is gravity of the moment. If the Eagles or Ravens had beaten the Pats they would have been footnotes in NFL history - if the Chargers do they are part of history.

Does Volek have the intestinal fortitude to accomplish such a Herculean task? I wouldn't bet on it, although he might be able to cover the spread. But who cares, the spread doesn't go to Glendale!
