Bear with me as this is not a baseball thread. The recent Sox/Angels series in Boston featured some controversy surrounding intimidation of the umpires. First the Angels suggested the umps gave Boston all the calls in critical situations because they were afraid of the fans at Fenway. Later it was the officials pointing the finger at the Angels coaching staff for intimidating them as they made their way through the Anaheim clubhouse after the game. We already know that Rex Ryan is whipping the Jests fans into a frenzy for Sunday's game. We also know these are the same fans that have cheered an injury to one of their own players (Chad Pennington) and practiced mob mentality intimidation and harrassment of fellow (female) fans. Secondly, the Jets players are sounding like heels selling their match on some WWE pay-per-view. The talk is of not merely beating the Pats but rather, embarrassing them, and using blunt force trauma, etc. The players and coaches are calling this game their Superbowl and are overly confident and expecting of a win. Emotions will be running high. Finally, Rex is Buddy Ryan's son. Buddy, you remember, routinely denigrated other coaches during games and even assaulted his offensivve coordinator on the sidlines (right hook to the jaw of Kevin Gilbride) in a game back in 1994. They say the apple never falls far from the tree. All of this has me wondering if maybe BB should be concerned for his personal safety down in the Meadowlands this weekend? What if the Pats go down and lay a beatdown of Biblical proportions on the hopes and aspirations of the Jets, their fans, and the NY media as many of us fully expect they will? Could Rex Ryan respond by turning on BB after the post game handshake and attempting to powerbomb him right there at the fifty yard line?
