Apparently the patriots had a workout with him. Haven't heard hardly anything about but he is apparently a riser due to a good combine. He's a bigger cornerback at 6'1" and had a better vertcal jump than prince amukumara. could be a sleeper in the 4th or 5th.

Good find. Always happy to add CB depth.

Amukamara had a 38" vertical, Cortez Allen had a 35.5" vertical. Allen bested Amukamara in the broad jump by 1 inch.

After looking at his combine numbers he looks like he could be a good safety candidate. He showed good strength (18 reps at 225), very good ability to cover ground (10.87 60yd), and very good agility (4.01 SS and 6.76 3 cone)

Per Wes Bunting of the National Football Post:

CORTEZ ALLEN CB, The Citadel
2011 GRADE: 5.7 T D (Tight, Developmental) HT: 6-2 WT: 186

A tall, lean cornerback who struggles to keep his pad level down and maintain balance in all areas of his game. Possesses decent fluidity in the hips, but allows himself to get too high when asked to turn and run and routinely allows defenders to get behind him. Exhibits good strider speed and has a bit of a second gear when asked to run vertically. However, doesn't do a great job keeping his balance when asked to extend his long arms and get the football. Looks natural when asked to get his head around and find the throw, but doesn't possess the kind of coordination to consistently go up and make a play.

Also, really gets leggy in and out of his breaks when asked to redirect in man. Too often gets upright and it takes him far too long to change directions and is forced to collect himself before closing on the football. Displays above-average closing speed for his size once he gets his feet back under him, but too often gives up too much initial separation to close and gets his long arms on the football.

Impression: A nice size/speed corner who needs to learn to keep his pad level down more consistently to have a chance of making plays on the football in man coverage. But, has some press coverage ability and warrants a pick.

During the East-West Shrine Game he had this to say about him as well:

• One small-school defensive back I am warming up to is Citadel corner Cortez Allen. He’s a tall, long-armed kid who is at his best up near the line of scrimmage where he does a nice job in press man. He was consistently able to get into the frame of opposing receivers, re-route them off the line and uses his length well to consistently get his hands on the football. Now, he is a high-cut defender who gets too upright too easily at times in coverage and does struggle to quickly get back up to speed out of his breaks and generate a good closing burst, giving up some separation initially. And he’s not an off corner by any stretch, as he needs to get his hands on receivers in order to be effective, but he did open my eyes yesterday as a possible press corner and is worth a later round pick, especially if he runs as well as many think he can.

Combine stats from NFL Draft Scout:

Code:
Combine Invite: Yes
Height: 6012
Weight: 197
40 Yrd Dash: 4.50
20 Yrd Dash: 2.50
10 Yrd Dash: 1.48
225 Lb. Bench Reps: 18
Vertical Jump: 35 1/2
Broad Jump: 10'09"
20 Yrd Shuttle: 4.01
3-Cone Drill: 6.76
4.40/4.47/4.58 40 range before Combine

Could be worth a 6th or 7th round pick. It would be interesting to know how well he tackles - might be a good special-teamer.

I think he'll end up in the 4th - 5th rounds, and I have a feeling he's being worked out as a safety, not a pure corner. He could make a good FS, with ability to drop down and play physical against bigger wideouts. Like the player a lot.
