While the US Secretary of State is shuttling back and forth, feverishly trying to stem the effects of the Palestinian-Israeli hissy fit (our favorite obsession), bigger, more devastating trouble is brewing in who-gives-a-damn-about Africa. Looks like the animals in charge down there are about to resume their slaughter of civilians right where they left off a few years ago. The UN Peacekeeping Mission is pulling out according to their mandate and all hell is about to break loose... again. And it's about control of- you guessed it!- natural resources that The White West really wants!

    Anyone give a rat's arse?

GOMA, Democratic Republic of Congo (Reuters) - Diplomats at the United Nations and regional mediators in Central Africa sought overnight Wednesday to ward off a deeper conflict after rebels widely believed to be backed by Rwanda captured the eastern Congolese town of Goma.

...While conflict has simmered almost constantly in Congo's east in recent years, this is the first time Goma has fallen to rebels since foreign occupying armies officially pulled out under peace deals at the end of the most recent 1998-2003 war.

Aid agencies have estimated that five million people have died from fighting and conflict-related disease since the 1998 war began.

Hundreds of rebels, who took up arms in April complaining that Kinshasa had failed to comply with the terms of a deal that ended a previous rebellion in 2009, poured into the lakeside town on Tuesday.

After sporadic gunfire, government troops melted away to the west.

When people get all worked up about Middle East atrocities, it does well to consider what happens in those countries we don't dare much about

I like that typo: "dare much about". I know it was accidental. but it works just as well.

Nobody wants to be called "racist" any country stepping in will have to kill people and as soon as they do MSNBC will start whailing about Racism.

George Looney Clooney will handle it.

Some former colonies made the transition to representative democracy (India, Caribbean islands, U.S.A., Canada). Others have been mired in totalitarian misery since independence...how do we help the latter become more like the former?

Who exactly is "them"? What makes you think that corrupt officials won't resell those items elsewhere?

The condoms and aids treatments do get to where they need to be - my understanding is that they are distributed by western personnel anyway.

The food you may be correct about. Sometimes you look at the landscape (Chad) and wonder why it's even possible for someone to live there without external food

yes, ever-tightening global energy concerns means the West no longer has a "don't care" stance in that region of the continent. Nor the East, for which it's even more of a risk. Stability in the region is vital, because they've found a bit more new oil in central/western Africa than they originally thought. Not just Nigeria, but there is potential in the Congo too. And it's the good stuff, not just shale junk. It's one of the few new "finds" that's truly "economical" grade anywhere on Earth. And remember, Nigerian production is a HUGE portion of China/India's pie.

These countries, and surrounding ones (Mali, Sudan) are slowly coming apart at the seams as "rebels" and Islamic nuts encroach.

If super powers step in, it will be a bloodbath.

    The thread title is appropriate.

This is the best read I've found on the subject:

    Black Gold in the Congo

Potential oil reserves straddle the country’s borders with Uganda, Angola and possibly other countries and could rekindle old sensitivities once exploration commences. In the context of a general oil rush in Central and East Africa, the lack of clearly defined borders, especially in the Great Lakes region, poses significant risk for maintaining regional stability.

    We are such addicts.

China has been very active in Africa. They are probably a little ahead of Western powers in terms of establishing relationships and having influence now. Strictly in the interests of promoting cultural exchange and the like, of course.

Wolf, your not supposed to mention that, when gang bangers stray bullets kill little kids it's considered "Racist" to even mention it, look the other way and make believe it didn't even happen.

Show an example, or stop making up nonsense. If at all possible for someone like you.

You're making up a straw-man position, and you're sticking to it. Clearly.

    Good job.
