The Conficker Worm: April Fool’s Joke or Unthinkable Disaster?

The Conficker Worm: April Fool’s Joke or Unthinkable Disaster? - Bits Blog - NYTimes.com

The Conficker worm is scheduled to activate on April 1, and the unanswered question is: Will it prove to be the world’s biggest April Fool’s joke or is it the information age equivalent of Herman Kahn’s legendary 1962 treatise about nuclear war, “Thinking About the Unthinkable”?

Conficker is a program that is spread by exploiting several weaknesses in Microsoft’s Windows operating system. Various versions of the software have spread widely around the globe since October, mostly outside the United States because there are more computers overseas running unpatched, pirated Windows. (The program does not infect Macintosh or Linux-based computers.)

An estimated 12 million or more machines have been infected. However, many have also been disinfected, so a precise census is difficult to obtain.

Thanks for this. Interesting stuff. I know there's a program from Microsoft that scans for this infection specifically and cleans it. I don't have a link. I guess it would be helpful if I did, but I can't change who I am...

I do want an imac. I've been saving for a while, but stuff keeps coming up. And I refuse to buy stuff on credit, so I'm stuck with a 9-year-old computer at home.

    Boo.

Yeah, kids sure do love to play with them. Going on 15% of the computer market and over how many ever million iPhones sold plus how many ever million ipods sold.

Yup, only kids like Macs and Apple products.

Yes it all happened - your subconcious created an alternate reality sending you into a deep coma of which you will never awake - making you experience an alternate history.

That also happened four thousand years ago.

    don't get angry.......

errr......right.....so 85% of the rest of the world is PC's.......mac is so damned good they made them run windows......

as for iPhones and iPods, great!!!! that's why I have owned apple stock on and off.........

nothing against macs, but they serve no purpose in my business.......other than that, they're nice little computers

It's like the short story "An Occurence at Owl Creek Bridge" - your mind created it all in the split second before your death.

Great short story if no one here has read it.

Nice! I run my business rather successfully on a mac without the need of windows...

    to each their own though.
