Which would be a good reason why single payer with 100% coverage is the way to go. There should not be penalties for not having health care.

wouldn't a prisoner get free healthcare?

Its funny how you all seem to be cool with a family having to declare bankruptcy because of the current system at the count of 1 million a year. Not to mention the 44,000 people who die each year from lack of coverage.

square it up, and apply the same outrage, conservatives!

For the record, I'm against jailtime for lack of insurance payments, as should anyone. But PLEASE understand that you should also be against bankruptcies , and death as a punishment for the current system.

Can I buy stock in the corporate prison system? I think that would pay my health insurance, at this rate.

While your right and it's funny too... That doesn't drive cost down. Those uninsured claims eventually get paid for by everyone else.

Yeah but you don't have to drive a car. You can choose to leave your car in the driveway let the registration lapse and walk or take public transportation.
In Pennsylvania driving without auto insurance is summary offense punishable by suspension of license or registration, not a jail term.....

Pennsylvania: What are the penalties for driving without?

Well the government doesn't mandate you drive a car or drive it on public roads. You can if fact buy a vehicle and drive it without a license or insurance if you drive it on private property.

Apparently you are comfortable with the government having total control over your activities. For my own part I desire the freedom promised in the Declaration of Independence, not a socialistic nanny state.

Shall the government now dictate that I buy vitamins and consume them? Perhaps they should dictate when and how much sleep I shall have.

If I own my car outright the only insurance I have to have is in case my car damages another. I don't have to have any insurance on my car if I don't want to - unless it's owned by the bank and I'm making payments.

Mandatory car insurance made the insurance companies very, very rich. So will mandatory health insurance. Now, public non-profit insurance options....

Is this any different than auto insurance? If you refuse to have auto insurance and continue to drive, I assume ultimately you could end up in prison. Perhaps auto insurance should be nationalized. After all, isn't it even worse to have government laws forcing people to embrace private companies. At least we all have a stake in the government.

I do not have to insure my car if I own it outright. I have to insure myself against damaging others or their property. You have to insure your own vehicle only if you do not own it (if you are making payments).

Same in MA, but my point is the same. You're forced to serve the interests of private shareholders or you could go to jail.

You still have to have some sort of insurance in order to protect the "other guy." In the medical world the "other guy" you're protecting would be those who get stuck paying your bill if you get sick and don't have insurance - namely the tax payers.

Not at the cost quoted. That wouldn't be equivalent to "uninsured motorists insurance" that would be requiring full blow comprehensive coverage; on every car even if it's a Ford worth $2000.

This is the "deal" the squeaker is trying to strike with the insurance companies. It's potentially workable for them if they get a bigger pool to insure but they need the penalty for non insurance to be high enough that people actually enter the pool. You guys think they're actually going after the insurance companies for good cause ? Ha. They're going after them because they haven't sold out to the obamans yet.

If President Jug Ears smiles his gorgeous smile and says "it's ok" you will all have to run out and buy your new Obama Insurance.
