Simply asserting their rights to Peyton while they hash out a long term contract once the CBA situation clarifies

I doubt we'll see a Manning deal before the new CBA is done. The owners crying poor while handing out a record-breaking contract to Peyton would look pretty bizarre.

Think anyone will call and try to throw some big money at him? Vikings maybe? I'd say its a huge long shot. But may as well try. He is 35 though and 2 1st is a lot.

As funny as it would be, I would hate to see Manning leave Indy...it would destroy the rivalry, at least for NE.

Yea, was kinda glad when indy won the division. A year without patriots-colts would be weird.

He got the exclusive tag, so no other teams can talk to him right now. Had he got the non-exclusive tag, it may have been a pretty interesting offseason :lol2:

    Re: Hmmm. Peyton Manning Franchised...

Remember this summer when everyone were saying the Pats and Brady were potentially heading for a bitter divorce and resigning Manning and Brees would be easy. Funny, there is only one of those three guys with a new deal right now.

I think we have our hands full with the Jets rivalry.
I found myself hating the Colts a little less this year for some reason.

    Re: Hmmm. Peyton Manning Franchised...

What? There is plenty to see here. There was a ton of time to sign him to a contract well before this point and it isn't like other big deals haven't been done yet. Obviously there is something or someone holding up the negotiations. Either Manning is asking for more money than Indy is willing to spend or there is doubt in somebody's mind. If this were Brady this place would be going ballistic for letting it get this far no matter what the reasons.

Agreed. I also agree with the poster who pointed out everyone was worried about Brady, but no one about Manning. Brady signed a new deal with labor problems looming. Why not Manning?

they'd have to call the Colts first since you can't negotiate with a tagged player.

    Re: Hmmm. Peyton Manning Franchised...

Good points all. It's possible that the Patriots aren't the only team that closely guards the injury status of its players, especially its stars. or maybe all those consecutive games just finally mounted up and they know he's running on fumes. plus, he's been a real practice maven over the years, throwing tens of thousands of balls.

    Re: Hmmm. Peyton Manning Franchised...

The reason Peyton doesn't do below market deals is his agent is Tom Condon, the agent who nearly singlehandedly drove the top ten draft deals of the last decade to the point owners are opting for a slotted system (that would probably result in agents getting a reduced % as is the case with the franchise tag where there is nothing to negotiate). Condon was also Gene Upshaw's agent and confidant and likely that is one of the reasons the NFLPA was never really interested in securing improved longer term benefits like disability and health coverage that agents don't get a % of. Tom was all about trickle down economics and how the top tier deals given to rookies drive up the overall market.

What is likely holding up this deal is the fact that Irsay will again have to come up with so much cash for Manning's signing bonus and pay out so much of the deal in the first 2-3 seasons that Polian won't let him take the plunge until the league gets some of the cost certainty relief it is seeking in a new CBA. After all he's set his kid up to take over as GM going forward and he doesn't want to see his kid set up to fail. While Irsay talked about making Peyton the highest paid player in the league almost as if it were a priviledge, Polian has been talking about the need to be able to afford to field a team around him.

Manning is likely feeling pressure from two sides for the first time in his career. Polian and the Indy fan base want him to settle for a little less in hopes of winning another ring while Condon and the NFLPA are likely pressuring him to once again set the bar in dramatic fashion. His deals to date have always obliterated the market in part because he was the guy who put fannies in seats for Irsay so he could get a new stadium with a better revenue stream. But it has to be getting harder to justify that as his career winds down the back 9 with that goal accomplished but still only 1 ring to show for it. Lots of guys manage to snag one ring consuming a lot less than the $150M or so he's already been paid in his tenure in Indianapolis... Brady brought home 3 in the process of earning less than half of that.

    Re: Hmmm. Peyton Manning Franchised...

You can negotiate with a tagged player unless he is exclusively tagged as Vick and Manning have been. That exclusive tag essentially means don't bother calling.

Yes, where are all the so called reporters. The ones that were writing about all the strife between Brady and the Pats?

    Re: Hmmm. Peyton Manning Franchised...

Mankins and so far all the rest (Ngata, Jackson, Woodley when it's announced) got the standard or non-exclusive tag. They are free to talk to other teams (once FA starts which will be a problem for them this year if there isn't any...) and if they are signed to an offer sheet the team has a week to match the offer or accept the prescribed compensation of two first round picks. In those cases the team decided either they weren't going to elicit that kind of compensation or they'd be just as glad to move on if they did... The difference in the two tags besides the inability to talk to potential suitors is the player gets the average of the top 5 salaries from this season and not last under the exclusive tag. Usually that is significantly higher, although this year without new FA contracts to fuel the calculation it might not be.

In Manning's case the $$$ difference was immaterial since his cap hit was so high last year he qualifies for 120% of his previous "salary" calculation which works out to $23.1M. His situation is unique though as in the last couple of years of his expiring deal his cap hits have been in excess of $20M anyway, he's 35 and counting, and for Irsay having the cap pay Manning's cost may be preferable to having to come up with cash over cap (bonus money) to craft a deal that would allow for lower caps early on at the expense of the backend of the deal (which may be coming sooner than later now). It's going to be tough enough sledding for Indy when he does go, let alone if they have massive dead cap to deal with for the first couple of post Manning years...
