They just released Jose Cortez ($585,000 salary) so in effect Adam took his spot among the Top 51 list. So the net cap cost to the Colts to add Adam to their roster is $1,095,000 ($1,680,000 (Adam's cap number minus $585,000).

Well.....

thanks alot there "Mr. Numbers".........I had just about gotten the bleeding to stop...and you have to go ahead and open the wound right back up....thanks alot!!!! :))(

Well that just sucks.

And I have to add that upon hearing that the Pats made last second offers of essentially the same money AV got from the Colts, I am disappointed with BB and Pioli on this move. If, in the end, they were willing to give AV the big signing bonus he wanted (according to a unnamed source in Carfardo's cloumn Sunday) then BB and Pioli screwed up by ever letting AV even think about leaving. By playing hardball for so long with AV they probably made it easier for him to leave. Sure, you could argue they were just waiting to see what the market would bear for AV but their eleventh hour overtures to AV and his agent also make it clear that BB very much wanted to keep AV here. While most fans have assumed that BB had set a lower limit for AV and just let him walk because AV had exceeded his value to the Patriots, it now appears BB simply underestimated what offers AV would receive and overestimated AV's allegiance to New England. And that sucks even more...

It's probably better than that for the Dolts. Didn't they carry two PKs last year, one for FG and one for KO? Adam can do both, and so effectively replaces two guys. Sort of like using a WR/DB for a KO/Punt returner rather that a returner specialist, or a OT/DT for a FB.

I'm less impressed by bragging about how low the first year of a contract is. Taking a three or five year contract, and saying it is a good one because one year is made artificially low by jacking up the others is disengenuous at best. The cost of a player per year is the money you paid him divided by the years you had him.

Just like my VISA card. I can charge it, but eventually I must pay.

You call it bragging. I called it reporting.

Where exactly did I say that?? When did I say that?? Please criticize my posts for what they actually contain. Please do not put words in my mouth.

Adam's deal is a good deal for the Colts, period. They got the best clutch kicker in the game at a very reasonable price.

They also released Dave Rayner, who handled all of their KO's last season. So they freed up additional payroll and a roster spot as well in the process of signing old Adam. ;)

just the facts, man

for me it doesn't matter what you call it. dungy got a great deal because Vinatieri is who he is, and is where he is: gone. i'm sick over it. wince every time it crosses my mind. yeah they paid too much. gladly.
i'd gladly take 40-yard kickoffs to have him back. and another quarter on the price of a beer. i don't drink anyway.

Av

Let's stop crying about the spilled milk. Instead, concentrate

your efforts on worrying about the late season game in the snow

when the Pats are down two points with 5 seconds to go. Will

our new kicker exit the stadium to loud cheers or will the temperature

suddenly drop 20 degrees?

Chill

You didn't say any of that stuff and I never said you did. Chill out, man. I can post on topic and it could just be about the topic and not about you.

Why do you think I was criticizing your post? I was on topic about the Dolts getting a good deal with Adam, saying that it was a good deal because they are now using one kicker for KOs and FGs as opposed to two kickers.

I certainly didn't say you were bragging about Adam's contract. Why would you brag about it? You had nothing to do with it, did you? Unless you are a secret partner with WMG and SnoopDogg. It is generally teams or players who talk aobut how cap friendly a contract is, when what they are saying is that the first year is made artificially low at the expense of later years.

It will be hard for Adam to beat Vanderjerk's # in the regular season. Perhaps it will make a difference in the playoffs. But with Manning's protection issues :) it shouldn't make a difference at all.

Nobody really wanted Adam to leave, he's a good kicker, but as they say, "all good things must come to an end." Furthermore, at age 34, I think the Pats got the best ten years out of Adam. The Colts' advantage is he will be kicking from turf in the twilight years of his career.

Like in any strategic game (like chess for example) if you lose something, there is always something that you can do to partially offset the loss. For example, we could draft the OSU kicker, and he could do better on KO. That could give the defense potentially 5 more of yards of field position. The new kicker could be able to kick longer FG.

Ah, crap. So the Colts signed Adam AND helped their cap number?!?!?! Sucking sucking super sucking suckitude of the suckliest sucking suckrement.

yeah, this year. But they aren't going to get away from making him the highest paid kicker. BB will find good use for Adam's $ he had allocated. I am sure of it.

There's pluses and minuses..I agree no one wanted him to leave..but things happen..AV got his money, the Dolts got a bargain and the Patriots will move on.

I guess his agent didn't do a good job.

Maybe he should have kept his old one. (regular happy face smiley).

Shhh... rumor is we're saving the cap room to sign Diet Mountain Dew Machine. It's got a hell of a lot more pep than last years Diet Pepsi Machine, younger, and after prodution fell off last year, is really looking to make the most of it's second chance.

I don't know what Diet Pepsi Machine you were watching, but the Pats' Diet Pepsi Machine was in his rookie year last year, and buried on the receiver depth chart behind Givens, Branch, Brown, and even Bethel Johnson. Now Givens is gone and even if Bethel would beat Machine in a sprint, Machine has better instincts, runs tighter routes, and has more heart.

But Diet Dew Machine has been in the league how long without producing?

Year Team Yardage
1997 Atl. 0
1998 Atl. 0
1999 Bal. 102*
2000 Bal. 48* *Led all receivers on team
2001 Minn. 70
2002 Minn. 124
2003 Minn. 0
2004 S.F. 144*
2005 S.F. 27

Okay, he led his teams in receiving with the '04 niners and the '99 and 2000 Ravens, but that says more about those teams than Diet Dew Machine. The only thing you can say about him is he doesn't have off-the-field problems. But his best years are behind him. Money would be better spent on keeping a figurative metaphor or two.

Just callin' em like I see 'em,

A bargain for the Clots..a lousy deal for AV??? Naaaaa

Cant we all just get along

The real problem here is how will I react to AV at Gillette this season while he is wearing that loserform with the horseshoe.

I loved having him here, but now I see him as a sell out who snubbed the chance of finishing a legendary career where it was made legendary.

Business is business and money is money. But at the end of the day he's kicking FGs for perrenial losers like Dungy, Manning, Polian and all Colts fans in general.

Losing is contagious.
Maybe Adam just wants to play shorter seasons.
