Ron Brace said the exact same thing in his interview yesterday, so far #1 & #2 are speaking like they listened very closely to BB's welcome speech.

We don't get to see much PAC 10 football in the east, but I live in Oregon and Mass (I get to pay income tax to TWO states!). This kid played lights out. He was my draft "binky" as we say around here. He's the perfect Patriots player assuming he can make the grade in the pros.

I can't believe I just used the word binky. I'll be saying shadow roster next.

As long as he continues knocking people into different zip codes he can bone up all he wants on the Pats terminology.......

BB drafted a quality hitter at SS..........

If this kid carries himself on the field nearly as well as he appears to off it he looks to have impact player potential. Would be nice if they could get Rodney to come in and work on the finishing touches of his rehab at Gillette even if they don't envision adding him to the PUP squad since he's made it pretty clear he will at least be available for the shadow roster. I believe Troy worked out here unsigned his last couple of off seasons...

I think that last year's rookie group stood out by the way they approached learning the system, led by Mayo and Guyton. Chung seems to be continuing on that path. I think BB may perhaps be prioritizing a player being a film junkie and a quick learner more than in the past - not because he's relying on immediate results, but because those players are more likely to adapt well to his complex system and eventually succeed. Producing early results is a nice fringe benefit though.

A young enforcer in the secondary would be a tremendous asset to this defense. Meriweather could be the ballhawk, which is more the role that was initially envisioned of him.

Nice to see a player who "gets it" and has the smarts to try to connect what he learned and what he needs to learn.

This is amazing. Nobody's ever actually read the playbook and tried to learn before!

I think Mayo was the first. :D Now that there's an existence proof that a rookie on D can master enough of it to start all 16 games and become DROY, maybe others will be less intimidated. Chung doesn't seem at all intimidated, which is a good sign.

I think the complexity of the Pats defense gets overplayed a little bit. I think it intimidates rookies sometimes because the Pats ask you to do a lot of different things in different situations. But like Chung said, it's all the same stuff, just different terms for it.

At this stage of the NFL, I find it hard to believe any team deploys an individual coverage or assignment that no one else has seen or is capable of understanding. It's more about recognition of when to use it, and prioritizing your assignment within a particular play.
