Loves to be a "Jerk" if that's what it takes to get supreme effort and efficiency.

Says his biggest challenge at ND was to dress everyone down to build the orginization from ground up. Does not care what anyone thinks...100% total confidence. Loves the challenge every season of having a team with a bunch of rookies....

I'll leave more for others to post....but real great interview.

Why he was not hired in the NFL when they had their chance amazes me.....he was better than all hired since then.

Andy Reid of the Eagles said "Charlie must be spending alot of time in the confessional with his foul language.
Weiss says coaches are miserable by nature....hmmm...shanahan looked very miserable today.

My guess is that he was passed by because they all knew the same thing that I knew...... He is not NFL head coaching material.

Smart, intelligent, great innovator, great teacher, great play designer...but not what it takes to be a head coach in the NFL.

We must be right or he would have had an NFL head coaching job by now.

He was, and is, perfectly geared to be a major college head coach where he can associate, and work with, the younger players and groom them for an NFL career.

Which is why Notre Dame ripped up his contract and gave him a bigger one, one with a hugely expensive buyout clause?

IMO Charlie has a chance...if he stays healthy to get on the list of coaching greats. Several reasons why i think this.

1 - He has the "I can get you where you want to be and then some" reputation. Sure...there are the lazy, egotistic type players. But at ND you have to be a good student, there is no choice in that. So, all his recruits already are willing to work hard in school...football is easy compared to that....advantage Professor Weis....ready and willing athletes and students.

2 - Television - Playing at ND gets you national exposure...with Weis being a hot media name right now, he'll get the recruits he needs to go forward.

3 - Facilities - This program has professional facilities...maybe better.

4 - Coaches - The program showed Weis is not afraid to school his coaches...to keep them on their toes at all times...Thank You Tuna & BB.

5 - Desire - Weis has the desire to be a great college coach....it shows. So...a no-name teacher has the desire and dedication to become a great, if not HOF caliber OC in the NFL....no category for that...but his reputation is as good as any who ever coached offensives. Weis appears to be willing to do whatever it takes to build a legacy .... who should doubt him now?

Football is easy compared to school work? Says who? I haven't played in college, but I played in High School and it was WAY more challenging than anything I did in college. And I have an engineering degree. I can only imagine how much tougher the football program at any Div 1A school would be, let alone ND.

Thought it was a good snapshot of Charlie, read somewhere he has recruited an awesome class next year.. the third year as a coach of a 1-A team is the telling one. I believe he signed Casey Clausen's brother another qb and a couple of really tall receivers. Of course I am a long time ND fan and believe all of the hype anyways.

He almost DIED from it, little known gastric bypass FACT is that 1 in 200 die or from infection or complications. Charlie was one of the unlucky.

They saved his life, but they returned his stomach to normal in the process. SO in essence, CW never had a stomach stapling.

Thanks for clearing that up... I really just wanted to work in my "more chins than a hong kong phonebook" joke and figured that must have been what happened way back when, but honestly I never followed it all that closely enough

Are you saying high school football was way more challenging than engineering in college? I did both of those also, and, wow, can't say as I agree at all. Notre Dame football I imagine is quite a challenge, and they've always had a reputation there, as have a few other schools like Penn State, for pushing their players to study and graduate. Back to college engineering, EE in my case, that was the hardest I ever worked, especially the first year and a half. High school football was a breeze in comparison.

Back to Charlie, if he really is using the ND hymnbook and bible, and I have no reason to think he isn't, wrt stressing classes, GPAs and graduating, as well as Xs and Os, seems like he's the perfect man for the job. The Notre Dame fight song was "borrowed" by my high school, so I get fired up when ND scores and the band plays it.

Not really. The ND myth of recruiting great academic students is just that. They are similar to Michigan in that they tend to shy away from JuCos and Partials, but they're in on the same kids as Michigan, USC, etc. They take a flyer on the Willie Williams' of the world, though. The only "academic" issue they have is some kids not wanting to take freshman calc. I give ND props for their academic support staff, which does a great job with their graduation rates. But, the Holtz era proves that the "academic restrictions" is just a cop out for coaches who can't cut it there.

2 - Television - Playing at ND gets you national exposure...with Weis being a hot media name right now, he'll get the recruits he needs to go forward.

He'll get his share. But ND is not on TV any more than the other top programs. The NBC deal covers their home games, which is huge, but they aren't even the most televised program in CFB history.

3 - Facilities - This program has professional facilities...maybe better.

Negative. ND is lacking in facilities. They don't have an independent football building (players dress for practice in the stadium lockerroom and walk across the street to the field behind the Joyce Center.) ND's football offices in the Joyce Center are awful compared to their competition. I'm also not certain they have an academic center for athletes, either. While the stadium renovation was nice, the ND facilities are average at best. If you want to see top-notch, check out Texas (specifically the lockerroom/weight room):

Desire? If you've made it to HC level at a top 10 program, you have desire. Weis' intangible of desire is no more than Jim Tressel, Lloyd Carr, Urban Meyer, Phil Fulmer, etc.
