I wonder if he has any interest in being a backup. I have always respected him, his arm is nothing special but he competes. Being a backup is not 1/2 bad, he has taken a pounding recently and holding the clipboard is easy on the shoulder.

This would open the door to a Cassell trade. I would not expect to receive anything more than a 5th round pick for Cassell.

The QB situation in NY is so pathetic that Pennington will be around next year. He does give the team the best chance to win, sadly enough. Watch the Jets continue their "even-year" success with a 9-7 record in 2008, followed by another "odd-year" debacle in 2009 at 4-12 :)

Can't really understand your angst, are you saying that Cassell is a better option than Pennington?

Seriously dude, look at the starting QB's around the league... you don't think that he would take a backup job if he could get or compete for a starting job (Chicago, Atlanta, Carolina, TB, SF, Miami, KC, Balt., just to name a few off of my head) elsewhere now do you?

Can't really see this happening as he would likely be traded to KC where he can be a starter. I think Chad Pennington as a backup to Tom Brady would be fantastic given how well he manages games and his rapport with Moss.

Cassel will be hired for the informations he knows about the patriots , not because of his talent at playing QB.

There are many with their head firmly in the sand. And yes, they seem to prefer a QB who hasn't started since high school.

Personally, I have always advocated having a veteran QB as one of the three QB's. I think that Gutierrez and Cassel are in the same role, developmental QB. I defer to Belichick on who is the best of the two.

With regard to Pennington, I sdon't understand what the jets are doing. I would gladly sign him to a 3-5 year contract as a backup.

Probably not, unless he is tired of getting hit and want to play for a winning team.

Also my plan calls for one or more of these teams to trade a bunch of 1st round picks for the #5 overall.

I'd love it, but i agree he could start on 1/2 the teams in the NFL.

They might not see it that way, but somebody smart will realize moving the chains and making good decisions is better than strong arm weak brain.

We're lucky to have Einstein with a rocket at Foxboro.:D

    :yeahthat:

Pennington would be a terrific backup. Smart veteran, team player, etc. etc. But he will absolutely get to compete for a starting job somewhere next year. Despite all the crap he's taken in New York this year, he's actually tied with Derek Anderson for the 15th best passer rating in the league.

And a not-so-insignificant element: Pennington is not a UFA after the season. He's in the middle of a long-term deal, and given the dearth of QBs around the league the Jets will probably be able to trade him rather than release him. Anybody think the Pats will be at the top of their trading partner list? :D

Does anyone doubt that Pennington will be starting for any number of teams in the league who need a good veteran QB? Hmmmm . . . Baltimore Ravens come to mind.

That being said, we get one of these threads every week. Pennington and his agents know he commands a starting position with a starter's contract. No team is going to sign him and keep two QBs paid like starters.

If I were Pennington, I'd encourage a trade to a team that is committed to protecting the QB, as he's not getting that with the Jets. Worked out great for Clemens as well.

And yes, Cassell and Gutierrez are better, more cap friendly options as backups at this time, unless Pennington loves everything Patriot and takes a backup's salary. Of course, this is dreaming in that the Jets will do everything possible to move him out of the division if that's what they decide to do.

I still believe Pennington is better than Clemens, and I was not happy to see Clemens leave the game yesterday. The Pats could have had some fun with him.

I agree that he would be a good option just because of the fact that he is really good at the short passes, and doesn't get into trouble while having good leadership skills. But I don't think we get him as a backup unless he really wants to win without getting the crap hit out of him.

Pennington would be the perfect backup for us. He knows how to dink and dunk with the best of them. If Brady goes down I want a QB that can manage the game. Also where else would he still build stats as a backup? Cassel's played alot of snaps this year due to Brady playing so well :D

Pennington will be on the Vikings is my bet, I'm not sold on Tavaris Jackson and with that running game Chad would be the perfect compliment. A QB who can play smart and will take what the defense gives.

Are you kidding? He's better than 1/2 of NFL starters. Why would he take a backup job where he has no chance of ever playing, for the league minimum?

Don't forget Chad's a Rhodes Scholar, I don't think he's gonna fall for that kind of offer.

no way, here in Kansas City, Chiefs fans are thrilled to have to Brodie Croyle ( ranked #47 best QB in the NFL by ESPN) and Damon Huard ( #49).

    Who needs Pennington? :)

Chad was not a Rhodes Scholar, he is a smart guy and he may have been a RS finalist.
