As baby showers go, the party Mary Russell attended to celebrate her niece’s first child was sweet, with about a dozen women offering congratulations over ice cream and cake.

But somewhere between the baby name game and the gifts, what had been light conversation took a sharp turn toward the personal and political — specifically, the battle over access to birth control and other women’s health issues that have sprung to life on the Republican campaign trail in recent weeks.

“We all agreed that this seemed like a throwback to 40 years ago,” said Ms. Russell, 57, a retired teacher from Iowa City who describes herself as an evangelical Christian and “old school” Republican of the moderate mold.

Until the baby shower, just two weeks ago, she had favored Mitt Romney for president.

Of course Obama is behind both Romney and Santorum in the most recent national polls at ~43-44%, horrible #'s for an incumbant.

You may go back to whistling past the graveyard.... ;)

I think he (obama) will still win, between his loyal slobbering partisian liberal groupies and his hard core Racist supporters I think he will be re-elected, then, WE WILL ALL SEE THE REAL BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA AND WE WILL ALSO HEAR PLENTY MORE FROM HIS LOVELY WIFE, IT WILL BE THEIR SECOND TERM, THEY HAVE NOTHING TO LOSE.

GOOD GOD HELP US, FOR GOD SAKE.

My father, who served 12 years as a republican in local government, voted for Obama. His swing was over socal conservative issues. He yet again feels ousted by his party, and will be voting for Obama.

The Republican Party is a damaged brand with blacks, gays, Jews, Hispanics, Muslims, women, moderate Republicans. Anyone else you want to get rid of?

Women, from the looks of things.

Wonder how long it will be until "shepac" goes after the small baby shower gathering for insulting conservative womanhood by not toeing the line.

That should leave a majority of voters. ;)

Many people are deluded by the MSM I think you have provided a good list. I would prefer people who can think clearly and understand the issues and solutions.

The bet's still open, 13. I know you won't take it, though -- for all your talk, you know as well as I that Santorum has no shot against Obama.

    any #s on that, 13? :)

What does that have to do with Republicans? Their only consistent policy is lower taxes.

Interesting, though, that you believe blacks, gays, Jews, Hispanics, Muslims, women and moderate Republicans can't think clearly or understand issues. ;)

Are you saying that blacks, gays, Jews, Hispanics, Muslims, women and moderate Republicans cannot think clearly and do not understand the issues and solutions?

Based on what? Their color, religion, sex, sexual preference and political beliefs?

Or just based on the fact that they are not all white christian males?

Because if you subtract blacks, gays, Jews, Hispanics, Muslims, women and moderate Republicans from the human race that's about all you've got left.

Other than the Chinese, of course.
