Column is a few months old but interesting and the graphic is even more interesting

... our changing country perhaps changing faster than many realize.

I would have expected a bit more shading on the east coast
... not as drastic east coast vs west coast as the map shows.

It's inevitable that races will mix. Many are more attracted to other races than their own.

Does it matter? Not really...at least not to me.

If we all looked alike, we'd find something else to differentiate ourselves. Must be wierd to live in Japan or China where everyone kinda looks the same.

Politically i think it means a lot ... we just witnessed change at this election ... every 2 years now the impact will grow as more become eligible to vote. Replacing the older people passing on who used to pull the master lever LOL.

Republicans and Democrats will have a 3rd party at some point due to the changing demographics. What would happen say if a Hispanic party popped up ... interesting thought. Democrats and Republicans are already hard at work bringing races and mixed race issues into the platforms ... more democrats than republicans so far for sure.

What matters in the opinions of voters will change, economics will change ... lots and lots of change fueled by millions of people carrying around hand held computers / smart phones and communicating with each other.

With the global society we have now, in the (not too distant?) future race will cease to be an issue.

There will be inevitably more and more interracial families until we are all essentially interracial.

Nah....since the vast majority of Americans are caucasian, marrying a caucasian would just spread the conservative gene!

So let's get this party started!:D

I heard a number around 200 years when the world will be mostly homogenous racially. Between increased travel, the internet removing cultural barriers, etc, it won't be long

We will not all look alike, though. And unfortunately, all the women will not look like Halle Berry.

They say that about blacks also... from a distance maybe, but up close there are distinguishable features.

    Really? Wow, what insight Darryl!

Guess that's why I used the word "Kinda"....

When you were in China helping develop their farming techniques or whatever it was you did, didn't you think that?

Wow, in this context, that looks really racist. Not saying you are a racist, heaven forbid, which is on this forum apparently the only thing you can say that gets you an infraction for racism somehow... but dayum.

In any event, Hawaii and the West Coast also have high percentages of people who identified as mixed-race, and more power to them.

PR, your comment about "spreading the conservative gene" through the caucasian part of a mixed-race union (assuming a caucasian input,) is wrong in two instuctive ways... I know the comment's in jest, but its wrongness sheds a lot of light on this country's historical relationship with race.

First of all, you'll note that the "conservative gene" of mixed-race kids doesn't make them vote conservative.

There are a couple of reasons -- first of all, Cons' coded messages to hate one of their parents are not likely lost on them. Secondly, the cons also code the same messages in their direction.

But the common antecedent to this fact and to mixed-race political sympathies actually points to a better historical fleshing-out of Con racism.

The "one drop" doctrine of racial identity in America makes the traditional definition apply to you, whether one of your immediate antecedents was white, or whether 90% of them were, but during a different time. If you've ever watched Key and Peale, and you're a conservative, you'll probably crap your pants about the crazy ideas "those people" (mixed race) have. Maybe you will if you're black too. They both channel both sides of their upbringings to pretty funny results. But to a Con ideologue, they're just "more dark skinned liberals" (whose vote should really not count.)

So barring a change in conservative politics (rooted in the historical leftovers from slavery and Jim Crow,) you won't be "spreading the conservative gene" as more people form mixed-race families. If anything, in many cases, the standard Con line will fall by the wayside or the couple will dissolve.

Exposure to the Other is the sure-fire cure for American Conservativism, which includes a healthy dollop of racism.

The more people know each other, the more they'll reject the premise that some of us "don't count." That's bad for Cons.
