CB Tory James signed, per Schefter/Clayton/Reiss

The Pats have a long history under Belichick and Pioli for over paying for roll players and mid-roster guys. Look at Jarvis Green's deal. I think James has little to do with Samuel. He could be insurance, but he is more likely depth.

It's only slightly more than Brady and Morris, and neither of them have been Pro Bowlers.

Just the market these days. Something everyone needs to get used to.

Unfortunatley you might be right.

Just did the math and it comes out to about 2% of the cap space.

Well i was wrong.:(

I like the signing. This has to be the best off season I have experienced and I have been a Pats fan since 1968! And we have the draft in a few weeks with two number 1 draft choices.

The Pats continue to amaze me as it seems like they are sizing 3x's as many people as every other team. I've been waiting for this for years that just being the Patriots good players would want to come here. Now it seems like it's happened overnight. I figured it would have happened a couple years earlier.

Who cares if they overpay, the salary cap went up and is going to continue to go up. I'd say the Pats are taking advantage of it and are ahead of the curve versus everyone else. The thing I can't help but wonder there are good players who are signing deals and they could likely gwet cut because of competition such as Kelly Washington. If he happens to get cut where does that put him in securing a job with another team. Granted I'm glad they are coming, but it's mightily peculiar.

Overpaying? For Jarvis Green? People just dont get it! The Pats EXCEL at carrying that second teir player for depth. Very few "superstars" but a roster loaded with capable starters from 1-53!

2.7mm according to shefter, thats not cheap, could be the beginning of something with samuel

Deal is only for $1.35 mil plus incentives.

Pats agree to one-year deal with JamesBy Len Pasquarelli

The New England Patriots, who seem to add a veteran cornerback to their secondary mix every offseason, on Tuesday afternoon reached a contract agreement with unrestricted free agent Tory James, who spent the past four seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals.

An 11-year veteran, James will sign a one-year contract with a base value of about $1.35 million. The deal, counting incentives, can be worth as much as $2.7 million.

James, 33, is coming off a supbar 2006 campaign, but still notched 21 interceptions in his four seasons with the Bengals, and drew interest from several other franchises, including the Green Bay Packers, in recent weeks.

Most teams view James as a potential nickel cornerback and the Patriots probably will use him in that role.

He will provide the Patriots a veteran insurance policy in the event franchise cornerback Asante Samuel, who remains unsigned, does not participate in the club's offseason training program or misses the start of training camp. Samuel has said he wants a long-term contract and that he would prefer to be traded rather than sign the one-year qualifying offer of $7.79 million which New England has tendered him as a franchise player.

Another of the Pats' young cornerbacks, Randall Gay, remains a restricted free agent. Gay met recently with New York Jets officials and could still be signed to a restricted free agent offer sheet. The league deadline for restricted offer sheets is Friday.

Given that the Pats have struggled through a series of debilitating injuries in the secondary each of the past three seasons, developing depth in the unit is a priority.

James started all 16 games for the Bengals in 2006 and had 41 tackles, four interceptions and 10 passes defensed. But he fell out of favor with the Cincinnati coaching staff late in the year and the Bengals made virtually no effort to re-sign him once he moved into the unrestricted free agent market.

In 158 games with Denver (1996-99), Oakland (2000-2002) and Cincinnati (2003-2006), James has 429 tackles, 39 interceptions, 79 passes defensed, one sack, six forced fumbles and four recoveries. He earned a Pro Bowl berth in 2004 when he registered a career-best eight interceptions, and was a Pro Bowl alternate in 2005, when he had five pickoffs.

The former LSU standout, who entered the league as the Broncos' second-round choice in the '96 draft, has four seasons with five or more interceptions and five campaigns in which he had 10 or more passes defensed.

You missed my point. The Pats did overpay for Jarvis Green. He got starter money to be a a back up or roll player. I didn't mean it was a bad thing. The Pats overpay the middle part of their roster while others overpay at the top. You can get away far easier overpaying the middle part of your roster than the top because you can overpay three or four middle guys for one top guy. That guarantees you depth and doesn't destroy your cap.

I don't think it is a bad thing. In fact, that is why we are competitive year after year. If you are going to overpay players, you overpay them in the middle part of your roster.

even if Samuel were signed to a longf term deal they'd need backups, 5 and dime backs, etc. I don't think this has much of anything to do with #22

What other "roll" players do we have? I can only think of Fat Vince Wilfork, maybe Koppen too. :D

Tory can be used to mentor the young defensive backs we pick up in the upcoming draft.

Good news. I was thinking that it had to be some incentive type of a deal with a guy like Tory. He is on the old side and hasn't had good years lately. Burned too many times because he likes to gamble a lot. Hopefully BB will discipline that aspect of his game and make him a good contributor to our defense in some way. If he plays well enough and lives up to his potential, then he deserves the 2.7 million. Otherwise, good depth for 1.35 mil in a matter of having a vet in there instead of a rookie.

Good signing. Low priced, one year deal for a player who fits our style of play. He can start if he has to, but will most likely be depth. Could be one of those guys like Roman Phifer who gets labelled as "lost a step" or "done" who is productive in our system. Then again, he could be a lower risk version of Duane Stark (I bit my tongue when I said that).

Pretty tough for him to be worse than Starks, the franchise's worst defensive back in 10 + years. The amazing thing about Starks is I think he was picked up by the Raiders after the Pats.

As much as we all dislike Starks, don't forget he attempted to play with a bad leg and a bad shoulder... If he simply said I 'm injured and went on IR we wouldn't have liked it, but when he came back the following year, he might have been reasonably useful.

Let's not forget that Gay's tender is for 1.3 million a year so it's not out of whack for a backup.

Hey, don't try to be logical here. We needed someone to blame that season on and we picked Starks.

Some fans will never forgive you for trying to play hurt when there's no one else, just ask Dillon.

He's 6'2", gets interceptions and he's reasonable. What's the problem? We need all the DBs we can get.

Unless you want to keep giving auditions in the second half of the AFC championship game.

Thanks Rashad, don't call us we'll call you.

At 6'2", he could be the answer to who covers Dallas Clark when AD is smashing HorseFace's head in. A 3rd down TE specialist

Huzzah! Huzzah! And there was much rejoicing in the land as the tallest CB to grace the Patriots backfield entered the fold. :D

I mean just look at that face! How can you not trust a face like that??

Tory James, I would like to welcome you to the "familia." PS IF Brady says that he's going out for sushi and asks you to come along, just pass! He's just looking for a wingman to back him up so he can bag the hot chick (Giselle) while you get stuck with her fat friend!!
