Ok, so I saw this little nugget in Projo, presumably written before we found out the paper-work was submitted.

So is it true that Cassel agent was able to negotiate in between the decision to franchise Matt and the submission of the tender acceptance letter to the NFL?

If so, could it be that Dunn finalized a contract and/or the Pats finalized a trade deal at the Combine?

Something is really odd about all of the events of the last week, from Pioli's admission the deal wasn't signed (same diff as delivered), talking about a switch between #23 and #3 (possibly unimportant) and the sudden questions and subsequent answers about the tender on Monday?

    Interesting.

I think the deal is done. The bargaining is over. How fast it's filed is going to be interesting, but if the Pats aren't worried about missing the big money FA's (or they're getting parts in a trade) an announcement might be delayed a bit to keep reporters mellowed.

But some part of me says this matter will be answered by the time the late show lets out on Friday.

And with the info lockdown and clearout in KC and the fact that it's always like that in NE...

    hm, hm, hm.

Could that have meant if he didn't sign he could do this when FAency began?

Re: ┬┐Cassel Theory: Help me out?

Yeah, I'm wondering about that, but I also think if the Pats told him to go for it, they wouldn't file tampering charges, that could be the out.

    Just seems odd.

Very well put together theory. I would have to agree.

Say.... you don't happen to be a writer for CSI, do you?

If a deals done it would be awesome, we would hear about it first day of free agency right?

Re: ┬┐Cassel Theory: Help me out?

I think Cassel will be very hard to trade for the value the Patriots want. I think he stays a Patriot and they sign very few free agents.

Re: ┬┐Cassel Theory: Help me out?

This theory does hold together pretty well.
Makes sense of the strange remarks recently uttered.
I mean, why ELSE would Pioli care whether Cassel had signed,
unless he already was deep into a transaction?

Certainly a far better surmise than PFT's silly, He Won't Go to KC Because They're Each Afraid of Being Snookered.

    I don't want #3 though.
Pio has to swallow that risky, expensive pick
and transfer value some other way.

Best part of all is that ... until it's a done deal, signed and sealed ...
    knowledge that it is pending
can only stimulate better offers from the Snyders, Ziggies, and Fords.

Yeah, I think we're looking at KC's #2 and a significant player. Maybe Gonzo, maybe someone we don't realize is a gem.

Re: ┬┐Cassel Theory: Help me out?

The value the Patriots want is going to simply be the best that they can get for him. If it's only a 2nd, it's still a good deal.

Re: ┬┐Cassel Theory: Help me out?

That's not how they operate. They set a value for a player and stick to it. If the value of a player that played as well as Matt Cassel is higher than a 2nd rounder than he is too valuable for the team to part with and is of better use as a backup QB.

I'm not saying he is or isn't worth a 2nd rounder, that's just a hypothetical value for the sake of discussion.

i dont know if im taking what you said out of context, i dont think i am.

but, if there is a deal done, it will be announced as soon as it is allowed to be. another team isnt going to let the patriots wait on a trade if they have agreed upon it to make sure Brady is healthy. teams have to figure out what their roster is all about and make moves accordingly. theres no way any team will give the patriots a free pass and let them hold off if there is a deal in principle. if no deal is announced as early as free agency starts, then i would feel confident there is nothing at that point.

Re: ┬┐Cassel Theory: Help me out?

have you seen aaron curry? you're telling me you dont want him on our team? i know the money is insane, but he may be one of the safest, sure fire dominant players to come out of the draft in some time. LB is one of the easier positions to figure out how the player is going to translate into a bona fide NFL player. hes supposedly the best LB prospect to come out in a decade, and that's saying a lot because Merriman and Ware were very highly regarded prospects

Here's the question, though--what happens if DET or STL take him, and the Pats have #3? What do they do then?

Aaron Curry, Jason Smith, Eugene Monroe would all work for me - not that I think we'll be making this kind of trade.

Re: ┬┐Cassel Theory: Help me out?

yah that would definitely put a damper on things, and to that, I do not have an answer. But what I would say in that case, trading down would be the best option, if possible. Even if we move down just for the sake of moving down, without total regard to the value chart. For example, moving down from 3 to 8 for a 4th round pick (obviously getting a higher pick would be better, but just for arguments sake). And at 8, we could draft or do the same thing and pick up another 4th to move down a few more spots. I also think Jason Smith or Eugene Monroe would be great to have at 3 also.
