*Yawn* It's an interesting stat but can we please stop putting up comparisons to Tom Brady and Peyton Manning?

    Shows us a few things.

QB rating is a joke. People who think a QB is better because of his rating are retarded. That said, I hate the Dolts and any nitpicking is fine by me.

    Cassel is alright.

    Why?

Should we not compare the QBS in the league to the two best?

Don't expect that a back up a QB will = the best but what is the problem comparing the two?

I am kinda tired of hearing the don't compare him to this guy attacks. who should we compare him to Gus Ferotte? well that might be a bad argument as he should be compared to other back ups as well as the best in the league but he certainly shouldn't only be compared to other back ups.

Rather than saying don't compare him to this guy we should just be realistic in our expectations when comparing him to the best. And seeing as he is actually holding is own in certain statistics VS the greats than maybe expectations can start rising as he does.

I do agree that QB rating can be very deceiving and a joke in some cases, but Cassel being right there with Peyton Manning in it really doesn't prove it's a joke. Manning has not played anywhere near the level he usually does and his QB rating isn't one of those cases where the stat is deceiving.

I don't know if it's the knee and he's still injured or the offensive line not being as good as usual or what; but he's definitely played like an 80 QB rating type of guy and not like his typical dominant self.

    Disable Jersey

All stats are a joke in isolation. Touchdowns are a joke. Sacks are a joke. Interceptions are a joke. Tackles are a joke, etc...

On the other hand, looking at them differently, stats are a valuable tool to help break down and analyze the player in question, although they are not the only measure.

Or more to the point. How dare the OP present any evidence that Matt Cassel doesn't suck. It was already determined in the pre-season that Cassel sucks. He has the same o-line as Brady last year and the same receivers so if Cassel didn't suck he would have thrown 25 TDs by now and the Patriots would be 8-0. Pay no attention that Manning has the same o-line and receivers he had last year, that is irrelevant.

I don't think its a joke. Manning has not performed overly well this year, and his stats, including passer rating, reflect that. Matt Cassell is on par with Peyton Manning as a QB this year and the stats back it up.

Now, we all know who is better. We all know which of the 2 is already in the HOF. It also bears mentioning that this will probably be Mannings 1 or 2 worst seasons for passer rating in his career (either this or his rookie season depending on how it shakes out).

Tom Brady's worst passer rating for a full season was 85.7 in 2002 (He was marginally better with 85.9 in 2003; I will note Brady's YPA was 6.3 in 2002 and 6.9 in 2003 which is a huge difference) with 28 TDs and 14 INTs and the Pats had a 9-7 record. PLENTY of QBs have had better individual seasons (Favre, Marino, Kelley). Does that mean they are better QBs? No.

But, the stat says "Over this period of time (2008 Season), Manning's and Cassell's play have been comprable". They have.

Wonderful. Can we swap Cassel for Peyton on Sunday? Cuz I'm still good with that.

God among men that Brady is, even he couldn't pull that off in seven games. :D

To be fair though (not that the critics are but be bigger than them) Manning doesn't and that has been part of his problem... What it does underscore is by and large solid team play trumps isolated mega talent in this game. Manning has struggled to deal with changes in the talent surrounding him, much of which is younger or backups caught in a learning curve in a timing dependent offense.

Well, if we're going to be fair to Cassel, he doesn't have Brady's line from last year, either.

Manning and Brady are arguably the two best QBs of all time. I don't think anybody in this league should be held up to their standards. Not Brees, not Rivers, not Eli, and certainly not Cassel. If you disagree that's fine.

Manning has more SB rings and TDs than Cassel. Enough said.

With injured Manning, how many TDs has he thrown in 7 games? You need to compare it with Cassel and tell me who is better.

I like Cassel, but if given a choice would prefer Manning over him.. but my first choice will always be #12...

Randy Moss is a better QB than any of them.

His career passer rating is 95.8

Moss may be the best QB on THIS team but, clearly, the best QB in the NFL is LaDainian Tomlinson with a career passer rating of 152.1.

Just like the Giants played better than the Patriots in the Superbowl, Cassel has played better than Manning this year.

The Patriots were an exceptional team last year, far greater than the Giants, but the Giants played better in February and deserve to be acknowledged as the World Champions. And though Manning is a better QB, Cassel deserves to be acknowledged as having played better than Manning so far this year.

You've been hating on Cassel so long you are no longer able to think. Open your mind, think of it as two QBs. If the Pats had the record the Colts do, and won two games like the COlts "won" against the VIkings and Texans, you'd be using that as an example of how badly Cassel played. Well, man up and admit that Manning has sucked this year and Cassel hasn't.

Well, it's a stat. Which I guess in New England translates to "start".
