now we will hear jamie dukes trash and berate Cassel again for 5 mins...

So Cassel's making half as much over the next 6 years as Stafford? Hell, he's making less than Jake Delhomme. Good signing for the Chiefs.

Not to mention the cap releif they now have with this new deal.

Wow that is a bargin when he had them cold for $14M 1 year now. I though he could do much better.

Let's see... $14M guaranteed or $36 million guaranteed, which to take?

Remember there is a risk of career limiting injury taking the one year deal. Cassel is young enough that in year 5 he gets another LARGER deal assuming he performs (I'm confident) and stays healthy.

No he's not. The $36 mill is guaranteed.

It's not a 6 year, $36M as in $6M per year...that's just the guaranteed portion of the contract. No word on the entire terms of the deal.

Good for Cassel, he worked hard, learned, and when he had the opportunity he made the most of it. That's the American way. I wish him all the best, except when he faces the Pats......

he deserves it, at least.

My only addition to this thread: I used to live in the same apartment complex as Matt Cassel.

36M guaranteed? Way to go Cassel!

The write up here that I responded to said $36M not $36M guaranteed. These are very differant

Breaking news. With the new contract, Cassel is traded to Denver for the 12 and their 2nd. KC is locked in on Sanchez at 3. Joking of course.

Re: Cassel agrees 6yr,36 mill contract.. (Merged X2)

Just interesting to note the context here now that we know that talks with Cassel and the Chiefs were ongoing for a long term deal - they just took a VERY long time:

If the Patriots had to have waited for Cassel to have worked out long term deal before agreeing to a trade, it would possibly be the PATRIOTS who were announcing their trade of Cassel today.

The saving grace for the Pats was that they struck a deal with one of the few teams able to carry Cassel's $15 million franchise tender and accept an immediate trade (that and the fact that Cassel signed the tender - which he was second guessing himself about since that allowed him to be traded to any team able to carry his one year deal.)

So unless fans would prefer that the Patriots were as active in free agency as the Panthers, they should be pretty happy with a 2nd round pick and an active free agency.
