Well, the residents of Middleborough voted and it looks like the casino passed its biggest hurdle to date, and by a much more significant margin than I expected (2,387 to 1,335). Opponents were talking about filing suit and, granted, this is Massachusetts where judicial activism is the norm... but right now the casino seems likely to come to fruition.

I just wish it were possible to have a sports book

even in a topic we ultimately agree on, Transfat here appears to not have a clue... it's still far from "likely" despite the Middleboro residents' vote today... the governor still has to decide whether or not to allow Class III gambling... and then the tribe will have to negotiate a casino deal with the state... many other legal and regulatory hurdles also would remain...

nonetheless, sure would love to see QuiGon across from the poker table some night... Talk about a dead-money fish... Tells galore...

The Commonwealth may give it's legislative approval, but they should stay out of the business of Casino gambling. I have no problem with those who choose this vice, but I want no part of it. This is raunch, separates poor people (elderly and/or stupid) from their money and redistributes to wealthier people who wouldn't think of going to a casino. Same reason it's wrong for the Commonwealth to run lottery games.

Just as long as this doesn't interfere with the lottery money the state hauls away with giant trucks. I can't imagine what the income or sales tax rate would be without that giant pile of cash and its not like they'd cut spending if the lottery money dried up.

Living close to foxwoods and knowing lots of folks who work there and get paid crap and its impact on the housing sitz, not sure if 5 or 10 years from now everyone will be as warm and fuzzy about this 10 years from now...
