Caserio in ProJo: No pressure to sign veteran backup QB & Galloway still in the plan

I agree that we are thin at linebacker, even before Mayo was injured.

PRACTICE SQUAD
Obviously you think a lot more of draftees and UDFA's who were cut from other teams than Belichick does. There is no one with Practice Squad eligibility that the patriots believe would add more to the team than a street free agent. Given how difficult it has been for others to learn the defense in the past, this seems a reasonable position.

STREET FREE AGENTS
I would have kept Lenon on the 53-man roster. Apparently, Belichick believed that Ninovich had more to add as a backup ILB. I would have kept them both. I expect that Belichick will sign a free agent in the next couple of days. And yes, I expect that free agent to be better than anyone who would have been on the Practice Squad.

PLAYERS ALREADY ON THE ROSTER
We will see on Sunday. But, as we have discussed for these many months, Belichick's plan to replace Mayo in the 3-4 is likely to be Thomas. Guyton struggled (per Reiss) as the 4-3 MLB. He may be there on Sunday, or it may be Thomas. Ninovich may get some work at ILB. He is also much better than anyone that would be on the Practice Squad.

So, while I definitely NOT pleased that Belichick has chosen to keep an extra couple of guards instead of a linebacker or two, I don't think the answer is to activate Practice Squad scrubs, even if we had them.

This makes no sense whatsoever.

This team should always - always - have a LB on the PS, pref. 2 - an ILB & an OLB.

Without Mayo, we already have the worst group of ILBs in the league; and our OLB/DEs are nothing about which to write home, either.

As for the reluctance of the FO to sign a 3rd QB: at this point, why bother? There is nobody available, exc. for Damon Huard, who has any idea how to run this offense. He & maybe Brian Griese are the only QBs whom I would even consider. I would rather see the FO sign an ILB instead of a 3rd QB.

P.S.: Never, ever, believe what a jock, coach or exec says for public consumption. For all we know, Galloway is one more unproductive game away from being released.

Then wouldn't it seem reasonable that, in order to learn this defense, players should be acquired as early into their careers as possible to learn it?

I too would've kept Lenon, over Alexander. And I'm also intrigued about the possibility of Ninko at ILB; he has a lower center of gravity at 6'2/6'3 and the bulk at 255 to bang with the big boys.

Guyton struggled per Captain Stone, too.

Generally agree with the post. It's just a very disheartening situation right now.

In a pinch ... how about Kevin Faulk at QB?

I don't understand why they were throwing screens to Moss but not Galloway? In fact, Galloway should be the one receiving screens because he is a lot shiftier than Moss.

Good suggestion; Galloway should be able to handle a relatively simple screen route by now...right?

nice Supremes ref......wasn't that Justice Brennan about pornography?

Close. Potter Stewart on "obscenity."

Re: Caserio in ProJo: No pressure to sign veteran backup QB & Galloway still in the

Brian needs an off season like Brady did under Woicik; If his arm gets slightly stronger, he vaults into the position of a future NFL star like, softer-armed guys Brady, Sanchez, Brees, Warner & Montana.

One of these things is not like the others, one of these things just doesn't belong. . . . :)

He still will not look like the cannon armed guys like Peyton, Carson, Rivers, Ryan, and Cassel etc. But then they have only one Lombardi amongst them.[/QUOTE]

Oh which soft armed QB is actually a rocket arm?

Or which rocket arm QB is really a noodle arm QB?

BTW I purposely included a youngster not fully established in both categories to emphasize that arm quality was the issue, not star status..
