Over the last three years can you name these players just from their stats?

    Player A:
    363 tackles
    294 solo tackles
    3.5 sacks
5 Ints with 26 Passes defended

    Player B:
    268 tackles
    181 solo tackles
    14.5 sacks
5 Ints with 7 passes defended

Player C: (missed portion of 2005 season so the season before was used in place)
    365 tackles
    209 solo tackles
    7 sacks
7 Ints with 19 passes defended

    Player D:
    445 tackles
    300 solo tackles
    9.5 sacks
5 Ints with 12 passes defended

Remember this is over the past three seasons

There is a good point to all of this.

Player D is London Fletcher who Belichick has raved about in the past.

You want London Fletcher is free agency. Do you really want a linebacker who turns 32 years old in May and at what cost?

A is a damn stud. D 'ain't too bad. I'd take Fletcher for 2-3 years - if that's who it is.

Didnt think anyone would come out and get it right away but you nailed it. I just wanted to show how much that Fletcher and Briggs easily could have outproduced either of our mainstays at LB and how adding even one of them would be a massive addition to our defense.

Briggs is just about to finish his 4th professional year in the league and yet after his rookie season he has put up pro bowl numbers for 3 consecutive years. OLB or not those numbers are impressive for any player to achieve including Urlacher.

Fletcher also has had incredible years after just finishing his 9th season. He would probably be a bigger addition because he comes from a 3-4 and is the type of guy Bill has coveted so much that it just makes to much sense not to do it.

I'm not proposing taking both of these guys in FA but to take one of them and still draft 1 big LB in the draft and its makes your team somewhat younger defensively.

Belichick in that last game against the Colts said he wanted more speed up the middle and off the side. Alexander was faster than Vrabel in the middle and Vrabel was faster (and more experienced) than TBC. Vrabel was good but not fast as he nearly was and I'm quite sure most have noticed. Bruschi as well has dropped quite a bit of his step and looks like age is catching up to him really quickly.

So if your looking for someone who can step in and present results both of these options offer you a huge gain in your speed and presence on defense.

im all for the idea of Baker finishing his career in New England..be a temporary part of the defense till the rookies(first rounder we draft) learns the system

Briggs will be franchised by the Chicago Bears for at least one year. Buffalo is rebuilding their defense with youth, so Fletcher may not be re-signed by the Bills. Don't forget about Adalius Thomas who has the ability to rush the passer as an outside linebacker in the 3-4 defense.

It will be an interesting free agent year, to say the least.

    OR....

The Patriots really dont feel that they can get much from this draft and go with a huge shock and try and sign Briggs and focus on DB/S/WR in the draft.

Theres two different scenarios i placed out that this FO will be looking at.

Dont count Briggs out as an option just yet. Its still in the realm of possibility although it is going to get out of control.

wether we sign a veteran or not, we need some LBs in draft.

We have 2 guys who are just about to retire(Seau and Bru) and a guy whos nearing end aswell (Vrabel)

we need some future young blood here

Agreed and based on what belichick covets out of his players is always a few things Intelligence, speed and height. Things you cant teach are his big pick ups. Intelligence can be taught somewhat but most players either know the playbook or will never get it.

Players that jump out at me at LB and say that are Paul Posluzny, Buster Davis, David Harris and Earl Everett just to name a few.

I guess my question on the stats posted - what were the stats of all the individuals on the defense? BB's defense funnels ball carriers inside where two ILBs and 2 Ss await them. If a 4-3 defense worked the same way you would have 1 MLB and 2 Ss who would pick up the extra workload from the missing ILB used in BB's scheme.

Don't they play a 4-3 in Buffalo? They definitely played the 4-3 Tampa 2 in St. Louis.

Heres the last three years just for you.

    Adalius Thomas:
    239 tackles
    188 solo tackles
28 sacks (WTF he has averaged at least 9 sacks a season over the last 3)
4 Ints with 13 passes defended.
