As most of us pointed out when this moron went on his shooting spree, he was inspired by Beck's broadcasts about the "Tides Foundation" etc. A lot of right wing appologists on this board said that was BS, well....

California shooter says he saw Glenn Beck as ‘schoolteacher’ | Raw Story

Williams details what he saw as an elaborate global conspiracy and tells the journalist -- who he sees as his "media advocate" -- to look to specific broadcasts of Beck's show for information on the conspiracy he describes.

Beck, in particular, he says, is "like a schoolteacher on TV." Williams reportedly told Hamilton, "You need to go back to June -- June of this year, 2010 -- and look at all his programs from June, and you'll see he's been breaking open some of the most hideous corruption."

Thanks to the undereducated and misinformed media mouthpiece, Glenn Beck...this piece of trash went on a semi-automatic kevlar shooting spree against the highway patrol in Oakland.

you should be so proud Mr Beck.

Why can't crazy people just be crazy? If I go and shoot up a school or mall or something, but then blame in on the PatsFans messageboard, will you feel guilty? I doubt it, because it's not your fault. I'm just a loon.

Amen. Some people are just bat sh*t crazy and go off because they thought the movies (remember Taxi Driver) or their neighbor's dog (Son of Sam) were talking to them....

If someone on MSNBC is telling you that the owner of Lensecrafters in the Newton Mall is raping little boys, and you go there and shoot a bunch of mall cops, I'm thinking that without the rantings of the person at MSNBC, you'd never have shot the mall cops.

but by all means...keep defending Beck. This is going to happen again.

You might not have shot the mall cops, but odds are you would have shot someone. I have no idea what Beck said, so I can't try to defend what he said. But unless he said "go shoot this guy" I can't hold him accountable for someone else's actions.

Maybe this is what HD is getting at, but why does the fault have to be solely with the person who commits the act?

Clearly the shooter is most responsible. But if somebody pushed him in that direction, they bear some responsibility, too -- and that in no way absolves the shooter.

(I don't know if Beck actually influenced this guy -- but given his overemotional half-baked conspiracy theories, the possibility that he could seems real.)

Atta boy, Harry, keep the focus on minorities at all times.

How about religious nuts who kill doctors performing abortions? or who protest at military funerals? Or priests who abuse boys? Guess you haven't "heard about" those...

If Gore's book was dramatic enough in its propaganda (and while I have read it, I've read about it, and his language of certainty regarding things that are not scientifically certain does push it into the category of opinion / propaganda, imo), and the Unibomber was acting on it, yes, you could say Gore had some responsibility for his actions.

But was his book that dramatic?

Did he have substantial influence on the Unibomber?

According to Kazinsky it influenced him, according to T Bundy he bacame a mass murderer because of porn. The guy in Ct shot 8 co workers due to racism, should we blame J JAckson and Al Sharpton?

People should be held accountable for their own actions.

Big problem here though with this line of thinking is Ted K precedes Al Gore by about 30 years as Kaczinski commenced his bombing in 1978 and Inconvenient Truth came out in 2006... epic fail once again.

As much as I think Beck is an arse, he can't be blamed for what this idiot or anyone else does.

Can we please get back to holding the person who commits the crime accountable? This is far worse than blaming a parent for the actions of their children.

This is so far off the deep end, it's funny.

You guys have no problem thinking that Reverand Wright had a ton of influence on President Obama and that virtually all of Obama's actions can be traced back to Wright's influence - why is it such a stretch of your imagination to think that Glenn Beck, who Williams says he watched religiously, had an equal influence on Williams?

No, we believe associating himself with Rev Wright was like dressing up as a nazi. I don't think Wright directly influences what Obama does. It's just the fact that he attended a church where the pastor openly condemned his own country.

And then Obama called him an advisor and mentor....very, very different.

The thing you are missing in all of this is that the ONLY person to mention "The tides foundation" in print, radio, or on screen was Beck.

He is making this conspiracy up.

because he did so, some idiot (Not that I think hius audience is made up of rational thinkers) took some rifles and went to go kill some people at the ACLU and the Tides foundation.

let me ask you this PR, do you think Charles Manson should be a free man? he never killed anyone.

A loaded question, I'm sure. No, Manson should never see the light of day. But he INSTRUCTED people....specific people to commit murder.

God, I really pray you're not attempting to compare Manson to Beck....

Didn't he start bombing in the 70s? When did Gore start writing about the environment?

Taking his claim at face value, the next question, which clearly is subjective, is whether it's at all reasonable to have been influenced by the source.

Was Gore's book truly that dramatic or inflammatory?

I agree. As I already said, "...that in no way absolves..." the shooter of his responsibility.

We have laws that prosecute for "felony murder," right? Do you disagree with those charges, too? Do you think that expanding the circle of culpability somehow absolves the person who actually commits the murder during a crime?
