Our premier guys play the majority of the game and are generally strong in both the passing and running games -- I mean, no one stops the Pats offense, but I think we have as good a chance as anyone to contain them as much as one can.

I understand that...I'm just wondering what the Zona D will do, using their base package when the Pats go four and five receivers in the no huddle...I don't think it's a very good matchup for your starting LB's to have cover responsibilities when the Pats send Hernandez,Gronk and Welker on their intermediate routes...I watched the Zona game yesterday BTW and I don't see Paris Lenon or Acho being able to single cover Gronk...never mind Hernandez...Adrian Wilson hits hard but Welker is a mismatch 1 on 1 as it is with Kerry Rhodes...who we know quite well.

Is there anybody on the team that you trust trying to cover Gronk or Hernandez?

Hmm, I'd guess we go more nickel and bring the heat when the opportunities allow. In the nickel, William Gay typically covers the slot and I'd guess A-Dub would take the TE. I'd be interested in seeing if Daryl Washington could hang with the TEs (he's FAST), but I'd guess Wilson gets the primary assignment. Your WRs/TEs create mismatches against everyone - I don't think our defense will be an exception.

I think the better question would be if there's anyone in the league I trust to cover Gronk or Hernandez. :D

James Sanders is not a starter, and while he might play some he won't be prominent in the game. Peterson, Gay, Jamell Flemming, Wilson, and Rhodes is our nickel package.

Fair enough. You see Peterson being able to take one of Lloyd/Hernandez to task all game? That could certainly help your cause. Either that or someone capable of disrupting Wes singled up. Last few years the jets did a decent job (once a year anyway) of taking away a few options via single coverage exploits, and we had no run game to force their hand. Thing is, I don't think their Is a team in the nfl that could take Lloyd, gronkandez, and respect the run. Until I see it, I will continue to believe this.

yeah...that is IF BB decides to use the no huddle...which I think he will, considering we have a full complement of skill players experienced in the package....Pats, at home, opener...could be a long day if the Cards get down early... I think Kolb had a day once against the Pats when he was an Eagle...hey, that's why they play the game right...we'll find out....

CB - Patrick Peterson is an emerging star at CB, but needs to figure out the frequent PI calls he tends to get. William Gay came over from Pitt this off season and wasn't great in preseason, but knows the scheme well. Jamell Flemming was our third round pick and is a big, physical corner with a lot of potential. He's the nickel, but tends to play outside with Gay in the slot when in the game. Peterson and Flemming both fit DC Ray Horton's scheme perfectly.
Jamell Fleming was a big time 2012 NFL Draft board binkie for some posters, including myself, on the PatsFans message board.

I'd guess Peterson spends most of the game on Lloyd. He shut down Sidney Rice pretty well, but drew several PI calls (the refs were an abomination against Seattle, but some calls on Peterson were legit). If Peterson can avoid the PI calls, I think he's got a decent chance against Lloyd. Our corners are big and physical if they have to get matched up against the TEs. I personally don't love Adrian Wilson in coverage, but he improved there last year.

Is Arizona's pass defense zone (cover two, cover three), or Arizona's pass defense man under with either a single/double high safety over the top?

We play man with safety coverage over the top. Wilson (SS) often pressures the QB. We love giving different looks and sending the pressure from all over. We've seen 0 to 4 down linemen since Horton's been around (the 11 guys standing up defense in my personal favorite!).

In case people aren't familiar, our defensive coordinator Ray Horton came over from the Steelers and is in his second year as the Cards DC -- so our defense incorporates a lot of those concepts.

Live by the blitz, die by the blitz!

Welcome, your coach comes out of the Steeler org, does the D play the style of the Steelers zone blitzes and pressure D?

If so that would be an interesting match up for our line which many of us view as a question mark at this point.

RE seeing what P Carroll did on D this week..... we had Pete as our coach so mos of us would rather not see BB emulate anything he does. :D

Again welcome and thanks for your input.

Yes, very similar style/philosophy. We probably get more out of our DEs and less out of our OLBs as compared to the Steelers, but that has more to do with the talent that we have assembled right now. We are very stingy in red zone defense, but don't generate a ton of turnovers (hoping this is something that will improve compared to last year -- we had an INT off of a end of first half hail mary and a fumble recovery on a backward lateral pass vs. Seattle, but also had an INT/fumble of our own).

QB - Obviously a huge question mark heading into the season. Skelton didn't play bad last week, but left the game with what appeared to be a major leg injury. Turns out it is just a low ankle sprain and he hasn't been ruled out yet. Kolb came in and looked great engineering the game-winning drive in an up tempo drive. My hunch is Skelton won't be able to go -- regardless of QB, I think staying in a more uptempo style is our best bet. If Skelton can't go, the backup would be Ryan Lindley - a rookie 6th round pick from San Diego State who isn't ready for prime time.

Have you heard anything about the Cardinals signing our former backup QB, Brian Hoyer?

The news on Skelton does not appear to be as bad as feared, and he has not been ruled out of the game on Sunday @ New England (though, I'm still guessing he doesn't play). At this point, I'd be surprised if we signed another QB.

Re: Arizona scouting report from a Cards fan

P.S., I'm guessing you were referring to ASFN in your other post? That's a pretty good forum in my opinion.

Missed this originally... ASFN is the board I was referring to. MUCH better than the official Cards message board (I assume it's the same case as this site vs. the official Pats one -- actually, just saw the Pats website doesn't have an official message board anymore). Very similar to this board.

I'd like to chime in.

Brady is Brady.

Our receiving starts with the te. Think of Gronk as a more athletic todd heap and hernandez is kind of unique. Hernandez gets open against anyone. He is one of the best when it comes to yac that I have seen. He seems to break the ankles of the first tackler consistently. Welker is extremely quick. Some guys use double moves to get open but welker literally runs triple moves within 5 yards. It takes multiple guys to contain wes or someone with elite quickness. Lloyd is our new unknown. Seems to run very sharp routes and gives us some size. But you probably know lloyd better than us. Besides lloyd, you don't have to worry about 40 plus bombs down the field. Its not what we do.

Running game. Seems more explosive than we have had in years. Ridley is a power back that hits the hole extremely fast and can break a few tackles. His game reminds me a lot of a slightly slower thomas jones. Hope that paints a good picture in your mind. Danny Woodhead is basically our darren sproles. We don't always stick to the run but it seems like we are going to try to this year.

Oline. Tackles are new and a little shaky but did a decent job last week. Guards and center are pretty solid. The entire line in general is very mobile and make great blocks in the screen game. I know darnell docket is capable of having a monster game, but if he rushes out of control there will be a massive amount of successful screens.

Dline. Our primary focus every game is to stop the run. Wilfork is a beast at stopping the run. Hes not really a pass rusher but he will overpower guys and he doesnt wear down throughout the game. Kyle love is the dt next to wilfork and the dude is pretty active. Love flashes from time to time. Chandler jones is our new beast at rde. He physically looks like Jpp but not as fast but maybe has a little more power. He has long arms and shows quite a few moves. He doesnt really run the arc but kinda just powers his way through guys and now in then throws in a great dip. Since the preseason, we have had cunningham, a backup de, play dt in a four man front to bring more of a pass rush and seems to be working so far.

Linebackers. Probably the biggest set you will see around. They are very physical and all of them have the strength to take on blocks extremely well. If spikes or hightower blitz up the middle, don't be surprised if they pancake whoever tries to block them, linemen included.

Secondary. We seem to have better safety play this year but you will make plays if your oline holds up. In years past we have made garbage qbs look like all pros. Some things you should expect to see is us completely take away your tight end with jams at the line of scrimmage and there is always open spots in our zone coverage about 20 yards down the field. Your qb just has to sling it in there. And for some reason slants seem very effective against us.

Special teams. You can probably forget about big plays here for your guys. Gostoski can kick the ball out of the endzone even before they moved the kickoff spot. So if you scare us once, you won't get another returnable kick and we have many special team specialists. We seem to take special teams more serious than most teams. Matt Slater #18 constantly forces fair catches on punts. We are not a threat to take back a kickoff but julian edelman is our hester when it comes to returning punts. look him up on youtube.

I honestly feel like we are going to win, but if you guys abandon the run all together it will make the game interesting if you can avoid throwing picks. Also, you guys should probably just blitz nonstop and ignore our run game. We use so much playaction its not even funny and teams seem to always fall for it. God forbid we lose, but I feel your only hope is if dockett plays lights out.

I hate Kerry Rhodes.

I hope Gronk does too.

Good stuff... here's some quick replies....

We did a decent job bottling up Marshawn Lynch last game (20 carries, 85 yars). I know Ridley had a great game last week, so we'll see who wins that battle.

Oline. Tackles are new and a little shaky but did a decent job last week. Guards and center are pretty solid. The entire line in general is very mobile and make great blocks in the screen game. I know darnell docket is capable of having a monster game, but if he rushes out of control there will be a massive amount of successful screens.

Dockett is a beast capable of making big plays, but he also understands a big part of his role in this defense is to be in the right place at the right time. He whiffed on a few big sack/tackles for losses last game, but generally did a great job consistently being in the backfield and being where he was supposed to be to prevent a few big runs by Russell Wilson when the play broke down. Dockett is now the kind of guy who has a very big game in part by enabling other guys to make plays.

As I noted earlier, our run game was totally ineffective against Seattle and given New England's gameplan I expect more of the same. Chandler Jones is definitely a threat against our inexperienced tackles. Wouldn't be surprised to see him get to the QB multiple times.

Secondary. We seem to have better safety play this year but you will make plays if your oline holds up. In years past we have made garbage qbs look like all pros. Some things you should expect to see is us completely take away your tight end with jams at the line of scrimmage and there is always open spots in our zone coverage about 20 yards down the field. We have the weapons on offense, but trick will be to give our QB enough time and hope he doesn't make too many mistakes. The supporting cast (Roberts, Doucet, Floyd, Heap, King, Housler) need to step up and help Larry. Our RBs are a decent threat to catch the ball out of the back field, but for some reason we have never been able to run a screen for the life of us.

Special teams. You can probably forget about big plays here for your guys. Gostoski can kick the ball out of the endzone even before they moved the kickoff spot. So if you scare us once, you won't get another returnable kick and we have many special team specialists. We seem to take special teams more serious than most teams. Don't forget there is more to special teams than returning kicks/punts. We have guys extremely capable of blocking punts/field goals and we are going to get several this year (Campbell blocked another FG in the opener). Justin Bethel (#31) is a guy to watch coming off the edge on FGs and punts, and Patrick Peterson is on the other edge for FG blocks.

You guys are the clear and deserved favorite coming in. We will blitz a lot and from all directions. Dockett is capable of having a big game, but don't be surprised if his name isn't being called a lot but we still have pretty good success on defense - the reason might be in part to Dockett doing his job in this 3-4 defense.

I love our D, but I'd be shocked if we kept this close. Gronk, Hernandez, Welker, Lloyd is too much.
ILB Daryl Washington is extremely fast (and good) but I don't know if there is a team on the planet who can overcome both Gronk and Hernandez.
Patrick Peterson, aside from the 2 PI's, was lights out against Rice last week. He's been pretty amazing since midseason last year. I'm 100% convinced this dude is gonna be a star as a corner. Here's a blurb from ProFootballFocus on his performance last week:
Peterson’s Potential

While we at Pro Football Focus didn’t agree with the widely held perception from last season that Patrick Peterson was already an excellent corner, he did show some real potential and in Week 1 Peterson re-emphasized that potential. The pair of pass interference penalties against him proved how close he was playing receivers all day, and when he was on the right side of the line in terms of discipline Seattle’s receivers got nothing from him. When shadowing Sidney Rice he was targeted four times and didn’t allow a single completion–he even broke up one pass in the end zone that he might have intercepted had Rice not fought back in to the play.
The Full Write up at PFF

I just have a feeling Brady is going to eat apart our blitzes. I'm not sure how well you guys pass protect, but if Brady is a statue back there, we're going to get slapped around like 2008 @ Foxboro.

Offensively, we'll struggle to put up 20. RBs are good, but the O-line can't open holes. Unless we mix in some hurry up offense for Kolb, he'll probably throw a couple of picks and look scared in the pocket.

Don't punt to Patrick :).. Although it'll probably be a 21-0 NE game by the time that happens :\

Good luck though -- I've liked the Patriots a lot more the last couple years than ever before, not really sure why. Tom Brady and Gronk (UofA) ftw.
