Horizon sounds prettier and nicer than timeline... kinda makes you feel all warm and fuzzy..

WTF is with our politicians sometimes? You're right, "horizon" was used purposefully instead of timeline even though it's not a word one would use in this situation. "operation-horizon"...there you go George, go with it!

Horizon sets a timeframe and could be changed based on events on the ground. Good news that we can look forward to getting out. Glad the situation has improved that much. Latest dispatch from M Yon in Iraq:

Amazing how the righties dwell upon and believe every word, betcha if Bush stepped in dog crap.. the response would be that he meant to do it to show solidarity with the troops or some such nonsense..

I thought the rules of the forum dictated that you needed to caption a source..

This is different than the type of arbitrary timeline people were looking for. An arbitrary timeline would state that on December 31st 2008, 20,000 troops will leave Iraq. Such a date and corresponding action would happen regardless of the conditions on the ground. What they're talking about, is setting preconditions, that if they were met, would enable 20,000 troops to come home (persay). It's not a strict timeline like most had been demanding. It's an optional withdrawl or sorts, that will only happen if the conditions on the ground permit it. Call it meeting half way. I think this is what should be done. If violence is down, and stay down in say 6 months, or a year, then we should feel comfortable enough to bring a good chunk of our boys home. Understand though that we will be there for a while. Probably not permanantly, but with a base force that will act as a stabilizer for what still is a weak government.

I'd watch the weasel-words... a "horizon" sounds a lot like "sunsetting"... when W proclaims the sun shall stand still, the sun shall stand still. Probably goes for W Jr. McCain too.
