They had a need, he fills a need. At least it didn't also cost them a player and he could turn out to give them much mroe value than they would get from the 3rd and 4th or 5th rounder.

and considering they already have a 1st and 3 2nds next year, the 3rd is not a big deal........

    it was the right move..........

    Re: Burgess trade - 2010 3rd and 4th

Sure, I would have preferred that the Pats give up a bit less, especially for a player that may only be here for one year. Regardless, at this point in time it looks like a good value for both teams. Right now it looks like a good move and the right thing to do for the Pats. Surely somebody will say in April, or three years from now that 'the Pats coulda' had this guy' but that's no way to evaluate a trade. This trade improves the team without giving away too much in the future.

Every report all along has had it as a bidding war between the Patriots and the Eagles, so there was no chance of a real steal here. It's worth it, which is all that really matters. And with a 1st and 3 2nds next year, the Pats are still in position to get anybody they really want.

To get the 5th rounder, I wouldn't be surprised if the Pats traded Greg Lewis to the 49ers if Michael Crabtree continues to hold out.

I'm chalking it up as finalizing the Moss trade that they got the short end on two years ago...

And three 2nd rounders? That's a couple of additional later round picks coming in 2010 and 2011 to make up for the "lost" pick needed to seal the trade for Burgess, and if it is a 5th rounder then it's going to Oakland which means the trade is really just a 3rd rounder outright for the Patriots.

That's a very good point. Overlooked in this discussion is the fact that the Pats had previously already put themselves in a good position to make this deal. With four picks in the first two rounds this trade is far more palatable than if they had, for example, already traded away picks and possessed just two picks in the top half of the draft. If that was the scenario then this changes the outlook and trade value dramatically.

    Re: Burgess trade - 2010 3rd and 4th

We have to remember how the Jedi Master thinks:always a year ahead.
The pats could have 6 or more draft choices make this team....more,if you count the practice squad.
This is a huge number considering this is a veteran,top-shelf SB contender. What does Belicheck usually do the next year?...........shed draft choices, either for player trades or future picks. Also, remember our 3,4,or 5 are bound to be end of round picks.BB went for depth this year....next year i predict BB will use his 4 or 5 high picks to go for 2or3 stud selections.
    It's the "Patriot Way".

I would guess that the Patriots would find a way to acquire a 5th rounder either through a trade when rosters are cut to 53 or by trading down during the 2010 draft.

That all depends on whether or not he's been paid the Roster Bonus. If he has, then the cap savings is only 2.5 million. If he hasn't, then that is something else entirely.

Since we picked up Burgess, I've thought Jarvis is gone. To KC if they'll take em, and cut if no one else will.

A 3rd and 5th (prob) for a guy some say struggles against the rush ? I'm willing wait to find out what's the value once we see game action. I'm sure BB will only ask him to play to his strengths, so it may be a great move. I'm just having a hard time forgetting Beisel & Brown.

In case Pats wins the superbowl, the pick is at end of 3rd round (before comp picks); that has to factor in raider's mind for another pick (likely a 5th rounder). This will work out like a top of 4th round and a 6th round considering how late the picks are in the round.

Pats did not give much. Love the trade.

Green plays 3-4 DE. Burgess will be playing 3-4 OLB.. Not sure how one affects the other here.. Could you explain?

Trading Green would leave them thin at DE, unless they also sign Kevin Carter. If they do sign Carter, I could see them entertaining a trade of Green.

How would it leave the Pats thin at DE? They have Mike Wright and LeKevin Smith, not to mention Richard, Brace, and Pryor.
