Re: Buffalo Bills WR Stevie Johnson to North Korea: "Bomb Foxboro, MA first!"

I thought Johnson's comment was acceptable, if unfortunate, and explained my reasons for taking that position elsewhere in this thread.

But, I live in NYC where a firm at which I have many friends actually did have a "bomb" dropped on it in the form of a hijacked plane, murdering over 230 of my friends' colleagues; so, I can understand that some folks might not be able to hear Johnson's remarks in the spirit in which I will, in charity, assume they were intended (i.e., the remarks of a competitive guy that was, to his mind, no doubt no worse than yelling "Kill the Ump" at Fenway).

The broader societal point you raise is valid.

Yes, it would, in an ideal world, be nice if we could all have a "sense of humor" about jokes directed at gender, race, ethnicity, religion, physical appearance or sexual orientation.

However, all too often "I was only kidding" or "Can't you take a joke?" is a thinly disguised way for a bigot to make a bigoted statement.

Personally, I stick to telling jokes that poke fun at my own religion, ethnic background, gender and race, without venturing onto ground that others might find offensive. And, I only do so among people whom I know will understand where I am coming from and "get" what I'm saying. In other words, with a relatively small group of friends.

Is that a limitation on my ability to speak freely? Sure it is. Is that limitation a necessary element of civil discourse in as diverse a society as we have in the United States? Yes, I believe it is.

This is the only time someone from the Buffalo Bills gets any kind of press. The last time was when their geriatric GM volunteered to the press that he 'wasn't scared of the Patriots' - - and then his team did what it always does.

Seriously, folks, is there any other team in the NFL more irrelevant? Maybe there is a case to be made for the Jacksonville Jaguars, I guess.

Year after year, the Bills game is the Sunday you give your tickets away to the guy who does your lawn.

We don't want the Bills moving to LA and landing in the AFCW. They might move a real franchise into the division.

Fair enough reasoned response. I respect that. Gotta watch what you say publicly, for sure, as it's all too easy to people to get the wrong idea and run with it. Never make a Hitler analogy in front of your peers, for example.

My problem is that the most rigid amongst us are trying to set the standard, and there is no reasoning behind their conclusions a lot of times. That's why it reaches such a ludicrous level that you see a six or 10-year-old kid expelled from school for bringing a friggin' squirt gun to class. This has happened.

On the other hand, humor is quite often at the expense of others, and there is no real way around that. You can't make fun of anything anymore? Are people really THAT fragile, or are they just *******s?

Maybe that's the reason why Bill decided to sign Jones instead of the superior David Nelson.

Kudos for a well-thought out, reasoned response.

Not sure how "superior" Nelson is, but I would have expected them to go after him as well. Maybe it's because Jones took a 3-year deal - Nelson wanted 1, or Cleveland was only willing to risk one after his ACL tear? Maybe it's the injury. Some people are never the same after an ACL.

    Maybe because Jones returns kicks?

I don't know, honestly. Was Jones much cheaper?

Well, David Nelson pretty much played the slot in Buffalo. I don't think the Patriots are looking for one of those guys. Nelson got one of those "prove it" deals in Cleveland. The contract terms haven't been released yet.

On the other hand, Donald Jones is a wideout that was supposed to be something of a downfield burner to stretch the field. Only problem was that Fitzpatrick couldn't throw the long ball to save his life. Jones still has a lot to prove as well, but if he can't do it with Brady, he probably never will. I wish him luck.

Funny thing about both of these players that some people may not know is that they were both picked up by the Bills in 2010 as undrafted free agents.

The details of Nelson's contract haven't yet been released, but I doubt that it will exceed
that signed by Jones, though at least that contract comes with little if any guarantees.

Edit: Meat beat me to the non-as-of-now-details of Nelson's contract, though as he wrote,
it will very likely be a prove-it vet minimum deal, and as he also wrote is just for one year.

I know he probably really regrets it saying it now.
