Broncos open up offense : Top Stories : Boulder Daily Camera

Teams are trying to find a way to try and do something resembling the offensive performance of the Patriots of 2007 and the Broncos clearly admit its last years Pats offensive formations which they are trying to copycat and right now are doing pretty well with the talented receivers they have.

Shanahan is a very intelligent HC and he knows he is second to the master at game planning behind BB so its really no surprise here.

It appears that the Broncos for the first time in a while is looking to be abandoning the run at least here in the early going.

Its a copy cat league but most teams don't have guys with talent to do it

Up until this year the Broncos didn't either but Stokely and Royal and the excellent QB play from Cutler have given the broncos ammunition they didn't have in previous years.

Denver is clearly the front runner in the division with Tomlinson gimpy and Merrimen out for SD

considering who their rb's are, i'm not too surprised. selvin young is good, but not a great runner.

as long as they don't run across someone who is trying to imitate the giants...

BB understands better than anyone the importance of depth. By going to 4 WR offenses, he knows that you may have an outstanding pair of corners, but how about those nickel and dime backs? It makes sense for Shanny and any other coach to force teams to go deep into their DB rotation and expose guys that might have otherwise been planted on the bench.

Still, you can't do that without risking your QB getting killed if the protection isn't there. Cutler had all day to throw vs. Oakland and from what little I saw vs. San Diego, appeared to have the same. This was the key to the Pats last year as well. If Denver can get 2007-like Pats protection for Cutler, then they'll truly be able to contest the scores the Pats put up last year.

    Chris

They may say they are imitating the '07 Pats, but they are more likely imitating the Rams circa 2000. Where was the defense on Sunday in Denver?

Formations? Sure, there was a lot of game planning and x's and o's. But for my money, the 2007 Pats aerial offense was about Brady, Moss and Welker, the 3 best at their respective positions. Take away any one of those cogs, and the bar instantly lowers.

No Brady, Moss, Welker, Stallworth, Belichick, E. Adams, or McDaniels?

    Good luck.

They are actually VERY similar to us. They have an absolute STUD wr in Marshall, Royal is nasty, Stokley and Stallworth are a wash and I'd personally take Scheffler over either of our TEs. And Shanahan is a damn good coach. If there's one team out there capable of emulating it I think it's the Broncos.

Looks like the Broncos chances of emulating the 07 Patriots offense could be short lived:

    VERY similar?

Perhpas I'm a homer and I don't see it, but Prior to Brady going down they were not even close. I'll give you Cassel/Cutler is a nod towards Cutler, but the others? Vs. Moss and Welker - No way.

    I love Belichick, hate Shanahan.

But man, until Belichick has more success against Shanahan teams I'm not sure I'm ready to say that. I've seen some Broncos teams that I thought were definitely inferior to the Pats go on to beat us.

    Bingo.

A "nod" towards Cutler? that's just totally ridiculous. Marshall is a top 5 WR and is an amazing YAC and deep threat guy. He got 18 catches last week. 18. And Royal is a phenomenal young talent. Throw in Scheffler (Witten jr.) and you've got an offense that is the next best thing in this league to the 2007 Pats.

It's more than a "nod". Obviously Cutler is no Brady, but I would put him in the top 5 QBs in the league right now without even thinking about it. My fantasy team agrees.

Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery, and if the Broncos have success with the formula and keep the Crybabies from winning that division (as long as they lose to us) than more power to them.

    (I guess this means I'm over 2005)

And he got most of those 18 catches against Antonio Cromartie

Royal reminds me of Deion Branch: A small WR who runs outstanding routes, especially adjustment routes, and is fearless across the middle. I can't believe he's a rookie.

Marshall/Royal is definitely on par with the other top pairs in the NFL. They've surpassed Wayne/Harrison (thanks to Harrison's decline) and are easily right there with Ocho Cinco/Housyourdaddy and are real close to Boldin/Fitzgerald and Moss/Welker.

If Denver had a decent LB corps I think they would be SB favorites in the AFC because it appears they are well stacked everywhere else, although its strange to say, but the RB position is nowhere near as strong as what it has been the past 15 years which could be a problem when the weather starts to get bad 2 months from now.

Eddie Royal came into Broncos mini camp having already memorized the entire playbook. Belichick would absolutely love this kid.

I strongly suspect that if Pats fans aren't familiar with him now, they will be after Denver comes to town. He's got that Welker/Branch/Brown gene on knowing how to get open and does so while knowing the QB sees the same thing. Lack of that gene is the reason physically gifted guys like Bethel Johnson and Chad Jackson can't find steady (if any) work.
